UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS B. JEFFGOTT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BED.
' Folding Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to folding beds, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 941,879, granted to me November 30, 1909.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved folding bed,
arranged to permit of holding the mattress and bedding extended in a horizontal position, or one end extended in an inclined position, or to allow of completely folding the bed, when not in use, into a comparatively small space, at the same time accommodating the mattress and bedding between the head and foot rails of the bed. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a mattress frame having a head, middle and foot sections, pivotally connected with each other, a center support for the middle section and an adjustable folding connection between the head, center support and head frame section, to allow of holding the said head frame section in a horizontal, vertical and inclined position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the folding bed, showing the head section of the mattress frame in an inclined position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the folding bed in folded position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the adjustable connection between the head frame section and center support; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same.
The mattress frame A, carrying the mattress B, consists of a head section A', a middle section A2 and a foot section A3, pivotally connected with each other, the middle section A2 of which is secured to and forms part of 'a center support C. The foot section A3 is pivotally connected near its lower or foot end with a foot D, adapted to rest on the floor, and from the terminal of the foot section A3 rises a foot rail E, as plainly indi Specication of Letters Patent.

cated in the drawings, the foot rail forming an integral part of the foot frame section A3. From the head frame section A depend pivoted uprights G, each pivotally connected at its upper end by a link H with the head I of the bed, and which head is adapted to rest on the floor, the same as the center support C and the foot D, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. The lower ends of the upright-s Gr are pivotally connected by links J and J with the head I and the center support C, and the uprights G are provided with vertical slots G', engaged by a clamping bolt K, extending from one upright to the other, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, see also Fig. 3. On the clamping bolt K, adjacent to each upright G, are pivoted the lower ends of divergng links L and L', of which the link L isy pivotally connected with the link H, while the link L is pivotally connected with the corresponding side of the head frame section A. When the wing nuts K of the clamping bolt K are loosened, then the head frame section A can be readily'swung into a horizontal, inclined or vertical position, and when the desired position is reached the wing nuts K are screwed up, so as to clamp the links L, L in position, to lock the head frame section A in the adjusted position. Thus by the arrangement described, the operator is enabled to swing the head frame section A into a horizontal position at the time the bed is extended, so as to permit use thereof in the usual manner, and when desired the head frame section A can be swung into an inclined position and locked therein, as indicated in Fig. 1, so as to raise the upper portion of the party using the bed to an in'clined position. When it is desired to fold the bed, the head fra-me section A is swung up into vertical position and likewise the foot section A3, as indicated in Fig. 2, it being understood that in doing so, the head I is drawn toward the center support C while the foot D is folded onto the foot section A3, and the rail E extends horizontally at the top of the folded bed, and the mattress and bedding are completely inclosed between the head I, the mattress frame A and the foot rail E, as indicated in Fig. 2. It is also understood that when the head frame section A is swung into an inclined position, the head I of the bed is drawn toward the center sup ort C, so that the upper free end of the hea section A' is at all times close to the face of the head I. In order to insure easy swinging upward of the head frame section A', use is made of counterbalancing springs N, secured at their upper ends to the clamping bolt K and at their lower ends to the bottom of the uprights G. When the head frame section A' is extended horizontally, the springs N are under tension, and when it is desired to fold the bed, the springs N, owing to their downward pull on the bolts K and hence on the links L, L', assist t-he operator in the upward swinging movement of the head frame section A', to insure easy and convenient folding of the bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A folding.bed, comprising a head, a foot, a mattress frame having a head section, a middle section and a foot section, the sections being pivotally connected one with the other, a center support for the said middle section, and an adjustable folding connection between the said head, center support and head frame section.
2. A folding bed, comprising a head, a foot, a center support, a mattress frame formed of a head section, middle sect-ion and foot section, the middle section being fixed on the said center support and the head and foot ,sections being foldingly connected with the said head and foot, respectively.
