RAILWAY-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 11,1910.
Application filed March 31, 1910. Serial No. 552,617.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEYE J. WESSELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at German Valley, in the county of Stephenson, State of Illinois, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to railway ties.
The object of the invention-resides in the construction of a railway tie which comprises a pair of similar cementitious sleepers connected together by a tie member and which will be exceedingly durable, efficient in use and comparative y inexpensive to install and maintain.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of con: struction and imthe arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointedout in the claims. V
In describing the invention in "detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway tie, partially in section, constructed in accordance with the invention; Fi 2 adstail perspective view of one of t e sleepers with the metallic rim surroundin the same removed; and, Fig. 3, a detail ragmental view of one of the metallic rims which surrounds the sleeper, showing the connection between said rim and the tie member.
Referring to the drawings, the tie is shown as comprising a pair of cementitious sleepers A and B connected together in the roper.
relation by a tie member C. As the s eepers A and B are identical in every respect, 0111 the sleeper A will be/referred to-in detai the same being shown as com rising a cementitious core 5 which is rein orced for strength by wires 6 in the usual manner. The upper faceof said core 5 is formed with a groove 6 for the reception of the base of the rail. Molded into the core 5 is one end of the tie member C which in this instance is shown as having the form of a squared pipe. and is so positioned within the core that the upper side thereof is substantially in the same plane as the base of the groove 6; said upper side .being provided with apertures? for the reception of spikes 8 which serve to secure the rail to the sleeper. The interior of the tie member C is filled with a mass of twisted wire 9 which is ada ted, to be gripped by the engaging end of t e spikes 8 to effectually secure the rail against displacement. The sides of the tie member G are slit at their ends to form tongues 10 which are bent laterally against the cylindrical faceof the core 5. The core o-is protected against injury by a metallic .rim 11 which surrounds the same and has its upper and lower edges crimp'ed over the upper and-lower face of the core to positively secure the latter within said rim. The metallic rim 11 is positively secured to the tongues 10-by means of rivets 12 which add to the general strengthand compactness of the tie.
What is claimed is:
1. A railway tie comprising two separate cement sleepers, and a tubular tie member connectin same and having its terminals respective y embedded therein, said tie member being provided with apertures adapted to receive the rail securing s ikes and a spike securing filling disposed wit in said member.
2. A railway tie comprising two separate cement sleepers, a metallic rim disposed around each sleeper and a tubular tie member connecting the same and pro ecting through the sleepers at its respectlve terminals, the said tie member havin its projecting ends slit longitudinally to orm tongues adapted to be bent outwardly and secured against the inner face of the metallic rim dis osed around the sleeper.
n testimony whereof, I
afiix my signature, n presence of two witnesses. HEYE J.) WESSELS. Witnesses:
. HENRY Nmrmos, H. R. Bosomms.
