PLANT-BENCH FOR HOTHOUSES.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN ODoNoGHUE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plant- Benches for Hothouses, of which the following is a. specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plant benches for hot houses, conservatories and the like; and the object thereof is to provide an improved bench of this class composed of reinforced concrete and which may be of any desired dimensions and ornamented in varis ous styles.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;
Figure l is a perspective view of a plant bench made according to my invention, and ,-F ig. 2 a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
In the practice of my invention, in the form of construction shown, I provide a plurality of concrete side posts o; any desired number of which may be employed, together with a plurality of corner posts Z9 which are curved or segmental in cross section, and said posts are adapted to be set into the ground as clearly shown at c in Figs. l and 2.
The posts a and Z9 are composed of concrete reinforced by steel rods or other reinforcing material as indicated at c2 in Fig. 2, and said posts a and Z) are provided at the tops thereof with reduced upwardly directed members or extensions a2 and b2 respectively, and the upwardly directed extensions a2 and Z22 of the posts a and form at the top portions of said posts laterally directed shoulders a4 and Zit on which are placed horizont-al top side plates or bars Z and horizontal top end plates or bars c, and the plates or bars d and c are connected with the upwardly directed extensions a2 and b2 of Specification of Letters Patent.

The side plates or bars d and the end plates or bars c are provided at their bottom inner edges with inwardly directed ledges g, and at the tops of the posts a and o are similar ledges g2, and placed transversely in the top of the frame work formed by the posts a and Z2 and the horizontal top plates, bars or members al and e are transverse floor plates It which are reinforced as shown at 72,2, and the top plates, bars or members d and c are also reinforced as shown at h3.
The floor plates 7L are preferably provided with perforations h4 in the usual manner, and in practice the top portion of the bench is filled in with earth as shown at z' and the plants or plant seeds are placed therein, or if desired the bench formed in the manner shown and described may serve as a support for potted plants only.
The posts a and b may also be bound together transversely or otherwise by tie rods or devices y', and the various parts of my improved bench with the exception of the floor plates L may be provided in the operation of casting or molding the same with any desired form of ornamentation or configuration; and various changes in and modilications of the construction and form of the bench, as herein shown and described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- A bench for hot houses, conservatories and the like consisting of posts the tops of which are provided with upwardly directed exten- 'sions at the bottoms of which are laterally directed shoulders, top, side and end plates placed on said shoulders between the upwardly directed extensions of said posts and connected with said extensions by a tongue and groove construction, the inner sides of said posts and said top, side and end plates being provided with inwardly directed ledges or projections below the tops thereof, and transverse floor plates placed presence of the subscribing witnesses this on saf-il'ledgces or projections, said posts, the 6th day of Mai-ch, 1909. top, side an end plates and the transverse T T floor plates being all coniposed of reinforced JOHB O DOB OGHUL' ,5 concrete.
