FURNACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KATZINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furnaces more particularly adapted for the use of confectioners and the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved portable furnace of this character which will be simple, durable and cheap in construction and efficient and effective in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating an eX- emplication of the invention and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an improved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 2a is a detail view on line 2&--2a of Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is an irregular sectional view taken on the line 8 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the front or face member of the furnace. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation showing one of the closures for the apertures in the wall of the furnace through which the water pipe attachment passes. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings and in the present exemplification of the invention, the numeral 10 designates the base of the furnace which may be constructed of any suitable material but preferably thin cast metal, such as iron, and is provided on its lower face with a series of ribs 11 preferably surrounding the center thereof and radiating from these ribs are another series of ribs 12 which extend toward and terminate at the periphery of the base. This base may be of any desired size and configuration but in the present eX- emplification of the invention, it is preferably circular with the periphery 13 thereof curved dwnwardly as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and extending Specification of Letters Patent.

beyond the upper face of the base at a point adjacent to the periphery thereof is a circumferential flange 14 which may be of any desired height, and projecting above the Lipper edge of this flange are a pluralityofv spaced perforated ears or lugs 15. One of these lugs is preferably shorter than the remaining lugs and arranged in the upper edge of the flange 14 adjacent this lug is a notch or depression 16, for a purpose to be set forth. Some of the radiating ribs 12 terminate short of the periphery of the base 10 and arranged adjacent thel extremities thereof are spaced lugs or members 17, the adjacent faces of which are inclined as usual, and between which the extremities 18 of the legs 19 are adapted to be inserted in the ordinary and usual manner. Suitable bolts or fastening devices 20 are provided as an additional means for securing the legs 19 against displacement when the furnace is moved from one place to another by dragging it over the supporting surface and these bolts or fastening devices pass through the base 10 and the extremity 18 of the respective leg 19 and are preferably provided with a head which rests against the upper face of the base 10 and a threaded extremity which extends beyond the end 18 of the leg and which is adapted to receive a suitable fastening nut 21.
A front or face member designated generally by the reference numeral 22 may be constructed of any desired or suitable material but is preferably constructed of cast iron or similar metal, and is provided with door openings 23, 24, 25 adapted to be closed by the ordinary closures 26. This front or face member is of any desired height according to the height it is desired to construct the furnace and is of a width and configuration to extend partially around the flange 14 on the base 10. A lug or projection 27 is provided at a suitable point on the inner face of this member adjacent the base thereof and is adapted to enter the notch or depression 16 in the upper edge of the flange 14, this lug 27 and depression 16 serving as a means for centering or positioning the plate or member 22 upon the base ,and when in p0- sition may be secured by a suitable bolt or fastening device 2S which is adapted to pass through a suitable aperture 29 adjacent the lower extremity thereof and through the short lug or ear 15 on the flange 14. The front or face member is provided with a flange 30 on the rear face thereof on each side of the doo- r openings 23, 24, and 25, and
these ianges extend from points adjacent the upper edge of the member to the base thereof and are located at points remote from the sides of the member and adjacent the sides of the door openings. The portion of the ianges above the door opening 24 are of some width and these flanges project laterally from the face of the member and the portion of the flanges below thetop of the j door opening 24 are preferably of la width somewhat less than the width of the upper portions thereof, as at 31.
A body portion 32 is provided for the furnace and this body may be constructed of l flange and t-he reduced portion 31 and these extremities may be secured to the member 22 and held against displacement with respect thereto by means of suitable fastening devices or bolts 33`which pass through the extremities and through suitable apertures 34 in the face member 22. Suitable fastening devices 35 are adapted to pass through the ears or lugs 15 on the base 10 and the body portion 32 for securing the latter to the base. The body portion 32 is provided with a chimney opening 36 and secured to the outer face of the body and around this opening, and in any desired or suitable manner, is a collar 37, to which is secured a pipe 38 comprising two sections which may be held together in any desired or suitable manner preferably by means of bolts or fastening devices passing'through suitable coperating ears or projections 39 on the sections, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The front4 or face member 22 is provided with a horizontally disposed iange 40 located preferably above the door opening 24 and projecting laterally from the inner face thereof. This flange preferably terminates short of the sides of the member 22, and se cured to the body portion 32 of the furnace arel a plurality of brackets or supports 41a (see Fig. 3), the .upper faces of which are v located in the same plane as the upper face of the flange 40 and these brackets coperate with the flange for supporting the grate. A projection`41 is also arranged on the inner face of the member 22 and extends above a portion of theupper face of the flange 40.
A grate supportingy ring 42 is provided with a peripheral flange 43, shown more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and this flange provided in its periphery with a notch 44, Fig. 3), so that when the [lange rests upon the brackets 41l and iange 40', the projection 41 on the front or face member 22 will enter the notch 44 and serves as a means for properly positioning the ring within the casing. This ring is provided with a plurality of downwardly projecting arms or brackets 45 which support the grate member 46 and this member 46 is provided with an opening 47 which is closed by a sliding member 48, which latter is supported by a. plurality of arms or brackets 4S) depending from the member 46. The member 46 is provided with a yoke 50 which extends below said member and is located adjacent the door opening 24 and this yoke member 50 coperates with the arms or brackets 4f) for supporting the sliding member 48 and through which the forward extremity 51 of said member is adapted to project so that when the door 26 is opened, the member 4S may be drawn forwardly with respect to the member 46 to dump the grate. The inward movement of the member 46 may be limited by means of a lug 48a engaging one of the arms or brackets 49 on the member 46. The member 46 is adapted to be axially rotated by the member 48 when the latter is in a position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings by means of a suitable instrument applied to the extremity of the member 4S, so as to shake the grate.
The members 46 and 4S may be removed from the casing by simply raising the same through the top of the casing and the supporting` ring 43 may be also removed iu a similar manner when the lire brick is not in position.
A suitable fire brick lining- 52 is provided for the furnace and this lining` is adapted to rest upon and be supported by the peripheral flange of the ring 42 beyond the door opening 23 and the bricks adjacent the door opening are adapted to rest against the flange 30, which latter hold the brick in position, and the portions of the lire brick adjacent the chimney opening 36 are cut away in the ordinary and usual manner.
A suitable closure may be provided for the casing which comprises an outer ring 53 and a series of inner concentric rings 54, by means of which the size of the opening at the top of the furnace may be varied to meet the existing requirements. The outer ring 53 is preferably provided with a. depending circumferential flange 55, adapted to stand within the upper edge of the casing to hold the ring against displacement and the, periphery of the ring may be bent downwardly as at 56, if desired.
With this improved construction, it will be apparent that there is provided a simple furnace adapted for the use of confectioners and one which may be readily transported and at the same time the parts are so arranged as to permit ready access thereto. Also, by providing the reinforcing or strengthening ribs 11 and 12, the base 10 may be constructed of very thin material, thereby materially reducing the Weight of the furnace.
If desired a Water chamber 57 may be provided Which is preferably in the shape of one of the lire bricks of the lining, and When it is desired, this Water chamber may be placed in the furnace in place of one of the fire bricks, preferably adjacent the chimney opening 86 and in a position that one end thereof will rest upon the flange 43 of the supporting ring 42. The body 32 of the furnace is provided with suitable openings 58 around which are secured suitable collars 59, and closures 60 may be provided for closing the openings when it is not desired to use the water chamber 57. lVhen the Water chamber is in position as shown in Fig. 8, the pipes 61 may be secured to the chamber so as to have communication therewith by passing vthe extremities of the pipes through the openings 58 and connecting them to the Water chamber in any desired manner. The doors or closures 26 may be provided With the ordinary draft openings 62 and the chimney pipe 38 may be provided with the draft opening or damper 63.
In order that the invention might be understood, the details of an embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but what I claim as new is- 1. In a furnace, the combination of a supporting base, a body including a rigid section With one end thereof resting upon and partially surrounding the base, means for securing the section to the base, said section having door openings and being arovided with flanges projecting laterally rom one face thereof and longitudinally for substantially the entire length of the section, said flanges being located on each side of the door openings, said body also including a flexible member resting upon and extending aroundk flange being provided with a projection,A
brackets secured to the flexible member and cooperating with the horizontal flange, a grate including a supporting ring adapted to rest upon the brackets and horizontal flange, said ring being provided With a notch adapted to receive the said projection for positioning the grate, and a closure for the body.
2. In a furnace, the combination of a supporting base, a body including a rigid section with one end thereof resting upon and partially surrounding the base, means for securing the section to the base, said section having door openings and being provided with flanges projecting laterally from one face thereof and longitudinally for substantially the entire length of the member, said flanges being located on each side of the door openings, said body also including a flexible member resting upon and extending around the base With the edges thereof engaging the rigid section and abutting the respective flanges, means for securing said edges to the rigid section, said flexible member being of a height substantially equal to the height of the rigid section, said rigid section being provided With a laterally projecting horizontal flange intermediate its ends and said flange being provided with a projection, brackets secured to the flexible member and cooperating with the horizontal flange, a grate including a support-ing ring, adapted to rest upon the brackets and horizontal flange, said ring being provided with a notch adapted to receive the said projection for positioning the grate, and a series of concentric rings resting upon the upper edge of the body and constituting a closure for the body.
3. In a furnace, the combination of a supporting base, a body including a rigid section With one end thereof resting upon and partially surrounding the base, means for securing the section to the base, said section having door openings and being provided with flanges projecting laterally from one face thereof and longitudinally for substantially-the entire length of the member, said flanges being located on each side of the door openings, said body also including a exible member resting upon and extending around the base With the edges thereof engaging the rigid section and abutting the respective flanges, means for securing said edges to the rigid section, said flexible member being of a height substantially equal to the height of the rigid section, said rigid section being provided With a laterally projecting horizontal flange intermediate its ends and said flange being provided With a projection, brackets secured to the flexible member and cooperating with the horizontal flange, a grate including a supporting ring adapted to rest upon the brackets and horizontal flange, said ring being provided with a notch adapted to receive the said projection for positioning the grate, a lire brick lining supported by the said ring, and a closure for the body.

In a furnace, the combination of a supporting base, a body including a rigid section With one end thereof resting upon and partially surrounding the base, means for securing the section to the base, said section having door openings and being provided with flanges projecting laterally from one face thereof and longitudinally for substantially the entire length of the member, said flanges being located on each side of the door openings, said body also including a flexible member resting upon and extending around the base With the edges thereof engaging the rigid section and abutting the respective flanges, means for securing said edges to the rigid section, said flexible member being of a height substantially equal to the height of the rigid section, said rigid sect-ion being provided With a laterally projecting horizontal flange intermediate its ends and said flange being provided With a projection, brackets secured to the flexible member and coperating With the horizontal flange, a
grate including a supporting ring adapted to rest upon the brackets and horizontal flange, said ring being provided With a notch adapted to receive the said projection for positioning the grate, a removable Water chamber supported by the ring, fire brick also supported by the said ring and coperating with the Water chamber to form a lining, pipe connections ext-ending through the body and detaohably engaging the Water chamber, and a closure for the body.
