To all whom it may concern:
Be it kno-wn that we, .l'osnrrr l). ltnNroK and KAY C. Knick, citizens of the United States, residing at'Loudonville and Columbus, in the counties of Ashland and Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Seals for Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a seal for cocks, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and eilicient seal adapted to inclose a gas or other cock and to engage and prevent the turning of said cock as long as said seal is in position.
It has been found that dishonest persons often connect and bridge the space formerly occupied by a meter, with a conducting pipe, thereby defrauding the gas or water companics supplying such commodities. It has also been found that inexperienced persons have turned on the gas into piping systems within buildings which were in a leaky condition, resulting in fire, explosion and personal and property damage. It is apparent that the foregoing evils may be obviated by providing means to prevent the turning on of the gas, by unauthorized persons. The seal forming the subject matter of the present invention is designed to serve this purpose.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed de scription which now follows:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a gas cock having our improved seal applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is an inner face view of the blank employed before it is bent about the cock, and Fig. el is an edge elevation of the blank shown in Fig. 3.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates an ordinary gas cock. The seal used in combination therewith comprises a body portion 6, the inturned side portions 7 and 8, the out-turned ears 9 and 10 having the perforations 11 formed therein, and oli'- set central angular' portions 12 and 13 struck from the body of the blank by the die at the time the blank is formed. A central opening 13 is formed in the blank and receives the lower end 14 of the cock when the seal is placed in position. In placing the seal in position, this opening 13 is litted over the end 1a and the ends of the blank are then bent upwardly around the cock until the out-turned ends 9 and 10 lie in contact with each other, at which time, the openings 11 are brought into registry with each other after which a sealing wire 15 is passed through said openings and a seal 16 employed to secure the ends of said wire together to prevent the removal of said wire by unauthorized persons. The angular upper end 17 of the valve plug lies within the offset angular' portions 12 and 13 when the seal is in position as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
lt will be seen from the foregoing description that the seal herein shown and described may be very cheaply made, for the parts thereof are so arranged that the entire seal may be struck from a sheet metal blank at a single operation.
While the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A. seal of the character described, formed of a single piece of sheet metal, said metal having a central opening formed therein in combination with inturned side portions, out-turned ends having registry openings therein, a seal member engaging said openings, and central offset angular portions also struck from said sheet metal to embrace and inclose the angular portions of the turning plug of the cock to which the seal is applied.
