FREDERICK L. MAYER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 4, 1910.
Application filed August 17, 1908. Serial No. 448,833.
I 12) all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of "Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vegetable cutters, with especial reference to that class of cutters used for slicing cabhages, potatoes and other vegetables.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of construction which can be readily adjusted to meet the requirements and in which the slicing blades may be removed, either individually or collectively, for the purpose of repairing, sharpening or cleaning them.
In the following description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a vegetable cutter, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, drawn on line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of one of the cutter supporting frames. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the sliding brackets.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The vegetables to be sliced are reciprocated along a slide way 1 which is provided with raised sides 2, each of which is provided with a guide channel 3, in its inner face. A rectangular frame 4, open at bottom and top, is mounted to reciprocate over the slide way and is supported by sliding brackets 6, which are secured to the side walls of the frame 4 and are provided with horizontally extending flanges 8, which enter the guide ways 3. The brackets 6 are adjustably connected with the side walls of the frame 4 by clamping bolts 10 and thumb nuts 12. These bolts pass through the walls of the frame 4, through slots 14 in the bracket 6. The slots extend angularly in the brackets, so that when the bolts 10 occupy a position at the upper ends of the slots, the frame 4 will be lowered into close proximity to the slide 1, while by adjusting the brackets longitudinally so that the bolts pass through the lower ends of the slots 14, the frame 4 will be correspondingly raised upon the slide way.
The vegetables to be out are placed upon the slide way within the frame 4, after which the slide way is reciprocated, causing the vegetables to travel along the slide way into contact with the slicing blades 16. These blades are adjustably supported as hereinafter explained, so that slices of different thickness may be cut from the vegetables. Vhen the cutting edges of the blades are raised, the frame 4 is correspondingly adjusted with reference to the bracket slot 14, so that it will pass above, but in close proximity to, the cutting edges.
The blades 16 are adjustably supported from the side walls 2 by means of removable metallic frame members 18, each of which is provided with laterally projecting bolts 20, adapted to enter recesses in the lower margin of the side walls 2, whereby the frame members 18 may be secured to such side walls by clamping nuts 22 on said bolts. Each of said frame members 18 is provided with a slot 24 to which a traveler 2G adjustably connected by a threaded pin 28 and clamping nut 30. The traveler 26 is preferably provided with a flange 32, which enters the slot 24, whereby the traveler is guided, when being adjusted longitudinally, along the frame member 18. The blades 16 are provided at each end with members 34, each of which is rigidly secured to one of the blades by a bolt 36 and nut 37, and. each of the members 34 is also pivotally secured at 38 to one of the travelers 26, whereby the member 34 is permitted to rock upon the pivotal pin 88, so that the connected blade 16 may be adjusted to the desired angle. The blades are so adjusted and held at the desired angle by means of set screws 40, having their upper ends provided with rounded heads or balls 42 socketed in the respective members 34. Each of said sockets consists of a cylindrical bore extending inwardly from the end of a member 34 and adapted to receive the head 42, the member 34 being provided with a slot of suflicient width to receive the set screws 40, as best shown in Fig. 4. The set screws each have a threaded bearing in a nut 44, which is engaged in a recess in the under surface of a corresponding traveler 2G 'or nut occupying a position between the traveler and the frame member 18. By turning the set screws 10 upwardly, the member 3% is rocked upon its pivotal connection 38 to increase the angle at which the blade 16 is supported and raise its cutting edge. The opposite movement of the set screw e0 lowers the cutting edge of the blade, owing to the fact that the pivot pins 38 occupy positions below the rear margins of the blades 16. It is obvious that these margins of the blades will not move materially in a vertical direction, when the cutting edges are raised. or lowered.
It is important to the successful operation of the device, when cutting thin slices, that the cutting edges of the several blades 16 should overlap the rear margins of the preceding one, the foremost blade then occupying a similar relation to the edge of the slide way 1, which slide way is provided with an opening for the reception of the blades and frame members 18. It is also obvious that as the blades are worn when sharpened, it is necessary to readjust them occasionally so that they will occupy the proper relation to each other. This adjustment is accomplished by loosening the nuts 30 and moving the travelers 26 longitudinally along the frame members 18. In such cases, one section of the slide way 1 must be correspondingly adjusted. This is accomplished by loosening the set screws 50, which connect one section of the slide way 1 with the side walls 2. The said walls are provided with slots 52, whereby, when the set screws 50 are loosened, this section of the slide way may be moved longitudinally along the walls 2.
It will be obvious that the blades 16 extend across the slide way 1 at an angle, so that their edges will shear the vegetables to be out.
After the device has been used, it may be readily cleaned, the frame 4t being withdrawn at one end and the set screws 22 loosened, thus permitting the frame members 18 and blades to be withdrawn and cleaned without disturbing their relative positions, the walls 2 being provided with open ended slots or recesses to receive the bolts 20. It is obvious that it is not necessary to remove these bolts to insert or remove the blades, since by loosening the clamping nuts the frames 18 with the blades, will be permitted to drop away from the walls 2.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way provided with an opening, removable frame members mounted in said opening, a set of slicing blades each pivotally connected with said frame, and means for rocking said blades upon their pivotal connections, together with means for adjusting the blades longitudinally along said frame members.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way provided with an opening, removable frame members mounted in said opening, a set of slicing blades each pivotally connected with said frame, and means for rocking said blades upon their pivotal connections, comprising set screws having swivel connection with the blades and screw threaded connection with suitable supports mounted upon said frame members, said supports being longitudinally adjustable along said slide Way.
In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way provided with an opening, removable frame members mounted in said opening, a set of slicing blades each pivotally connected with said frame, and means for rocking said blades upon their pivotal connections, said frame members being provided with longitudinally adjustable travelers, having means for looking them in position, and carrying the pivot pins of the slicing blades.
a. In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way provided with an opening, removable frame members mounted in said opening, a set of slicing blades each pivotally connected with said frame, and means for rocking said blades upon their pivotal connections, together with means for adjusting the .blades longitudinally along said frame members, and said slide way being formed in sections, longitudinally adjustable with reference to each other.
5. In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way provided with an opening, removable frame members mounted in said opening, a set of slicing blades each pivotally connected with said frame, and means for rocking said blades upon their pivotal connections, together with an open frame supported for longitudinal movement along said slide way and means for adjusting said frame perpendicularly to the slide way ;said adjusting means comprising connecting members movably engaging the walls of the slide way, and bolts passing through the open frame and engaging the connecting members, said open frame having angular slots for the reception of said bolts.
6. In a device of the described class, the combination of a slide way, frame members removably connected with the sides of said slide way, a slicing blade having its respective ends pivotally connected with the frame members, adjusting bolts having swiveled connection with the blade, and threaded! bearing members therefor mounted on said frame members ;-said threaded bearing members being longitudinally adjustable along said frame members, and said frame members being perpendicularly adjustable with reference to the slide Way.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
