To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLPn O. Klnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful l5 okkeepers Loose-Sheet Holder, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to a holder for re eeiving a sales-sheet or the like, for displaying the same in a convenient manner for facilitating the taking of the data therefrom in posting books.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a sheet holder so designed that the various entries thereon can be quickly obtained with respect to the different headings and subheadings, names of the customers, etc, without the necessity of tracing back to the head of the column from which an entry is taken and also to the name of the customer, thereby enabling the bookkeeper to ascertain at a glance all the necessary information to enable him to properly post the entries, the holder being provided with improved means for supporting the tabulated sales-sheet in coiiperative relation with a stationary heading corresponding to the heading of the sales-sheet whereby the latter can be turned step by step for exposing each line of entries thereon in carrying on the posting of the books.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sh et-holding frame having sheet-feeding means, and so mounted that the frame can be raised or lowered to suit the fancy of the bookkeeper and also tilted forwardly on the stand to facilitate the insertion of the sheet.
\Vith these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention com 'iriscs the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof on line 2-2. Fig. 1. Referring to the drawings, A designates the sheet-holding frame which is adapted to be mounted on a stand B consisting of end standards 1, as shown in Fig. l, or upon a stand C composed of a single standard, as shown in Fig. 8. The standards 1 are supported 011 base frames or feet 2, which are held in spaced relation by a bracing bar 3 having its ends secured in the feet by nuts 4:. The standards 1 are tubular and telescoping therein are rods 5 that support the frame A, which rods constitute extensible sections of the standards so that the frame A can be raised or lowered, as desired, the rods 5 being clamped in adjusted position by binding screws 6 threaded in the upper ends of the tubular sections of the standards. The adjustable sections 5 of the standards are composed of two parts a and b hingedly connected together so that the frame A can be tilted forwardly for facilitating the insertion of the sheet in a manner more fully described hereinafter. As shown in Fig. 5, the parts a and b have flattened overlapping extremities in the form of apertured eyes or disks 7 and 8 in the apertures of which is fastened a pintle 9. The eye 7 has diametrically-disposed recesses 10 for receiving a rib 11 of the adjacent face of the eye 8, the rib being so arranged that when it engages in the recesses, the frame will be held in upright position. The pintle 9 extends to one side of the joint between the parts a and Z) of the standard section 5 and is equipped. with a cap orthimbleshaped member 12 which houses a spring 18 serving to hold the eyes 7 and 8 in engagement with each other. hen the frame A is tilted forwardly, the projection 8 acts as a cam to force the eye 7 laterally against the tension of the spring 18, and as soon as the f ame A is returned to normal position, the rib 11 will engage in the recesses and be yieldingly locked in this position by the spring. The upper parts a of the standard sections 5 are secured to the frame A by connecting brackets 14 having sockets 15 into which the parts a are fitted and formed with plate portions 16 to which the frame A is riveted or otherwise suitably secured. The frame A is preferably constructed of a sheetmetal strip of any desired length and provided with rearwardly-extending end plates 17. The frame A is stiffened by longitudinal ribs 18 and 19, and also by curving the lower edge backwardly at 20 out of the plane of the strip. The ribs 18 and 19 are vertically spaced apart to accommodate between them the heading holder C, and immediately below the said holder is a longitudinally-extending opening 21 through which the entries on any line of the tabulated sales-sheet can be exposed in proper relation to the heading 22 in the holder C.
The sales or other tabulated sheet D is supported behind the frame A in such a manner that any line of the sheet can be exposed through the opening 21. For this purpose, a pair of feed roller shafts 23 and 2% are mounted on the frame, and on these shafts are cylindrical gripping members or rolls 25 of rubber or other suitable material, the rollers on one shaft being opposite those of the other so as to frictionally grip the sheet between them. The ends of the shafts 23 and 2e are supported in the end plates 17, and the shaft 23 extends axially of the upper rib 19 of the frame. The shaft 21 extends beyond the plate 17 at one end and is equipped with a milled knob 26, whereby the sheet-feeding rolls can be turned. The feed rolls are located adjacent the upper part of the frame, and in order to maintain the sheet in close proximity to the opening 21, a plurality of spring fingers 27 are adapted to press on the rear face of the sheet, pressing the latter forwardly into engagement with the frame. These spring fingers are secured to a shaft mounted in end plates 17 at a point below the opening 21, and one end of the shaft is equipped with a milled knob 29 for permit ting the shaft to be turned to simultaneously retract the fingers. The fingers are resilient and are held yieldingly against the sheet by a leaf spring 30 fixed at 31 on the right-hand end of the frame, Fig. 1, and engaging the cam 32 on the shaft 28. When the fingers are gripping the sheet, the spring 30 engages the flat side 0 of the cam, Fig. 1. Under each pair of feed rolls is a guide member 33, Figs. 2 and 3, which is arranged approximately in tangential relation to the point of contact of the feed rolls, so that the sheet will be easily guided between the latter in the insertion of the sheet.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the rear side of the frame A is provided with vertically-disposed guides 3l located adjacent the ends of the opening 21 for engaging the side edges of the sheet D, so that the latter will be guided vertically as the feed rolls are operated. In inserting the sheet, the frame A.
is swung forwardly and downwardly upon its pivotal connection with the support after which the finger-carrying shaft 28 is turned so as to throw the fingers away from the frame, and the sheet is then inserted pass ing the upper or headed edge thereof downwardly under the shaft 28 and thence to the feed rolls 25, care being taken that the side edges of the sheet are brought in alinement with the guides 31. After the sheet is thus engaged by the feed rolls, the sheet-holding fingers 27 are restored to normal position by turning the shaft 28. After the sheet is thus inserted, the frame A is swung back to normal vertical position, so that the bookkeeper can proceed with the posting of the entries on the sheet. It will be readily appreciated that the insertion of the sheet is facilitated by the location of the pivotal connection below the frame plate and the arrangement of the sheet-holding and feeding means on the back of the said plate.
The heading holder 0 consists of a strip 35 of metal of approximately the same length as the frame A and is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the front face of the latter immediately above the opening 21. The top and bottom edges of the strip 35 are bent inwardly to form L-shaped flanges constituting guides 36 for receiving the heading slip wnich is a fac-simile of the heading of the sales-sheet D. The slip 22 is protected by a transparent covering 37 of celluloid or the like which is also held in the guide ways 36 of the heading holder.
In the modification shown in Fig. '7, the exposing opening 21 is somewhat wider in vertical measurement than the opening 21 of the preferred form of the invention, as shown in Fig. 3, and extending longitudinally of the opening 21 is a line guide 38 in the form of a wire fastened at its ends to the frame A to enable the bookkeeper to readily trace the entries arranged on any given line in posting from the sheet D.
As shown in Fig. 1, a marking or checking device, designated generally by E, may be employed for marking the sheets D. This device consists of a lever 39 fulcrumed at etO on the frame A and having at its free end a check or other rubber stamp -l1 adapted to enter the opening 21 at the left end thereof for imprinting a mark on the sheet. This lever is operated by a push-button e2 mounted in a bracket 13 on the frame A whereby the lever can be depressed against the tension of a leaf spring M, which spring holds the lever in forward or retracted position.
In practice, the sheet holder is arranged at a convenient point close to the bookkeeper. The frame A is adjusted to the desired position on the stand B. In placing the sheet D in the frame, the various headings and sub-headings will accurately aline with the headings and sub-headings on the heading slip 22 in the holder C, and the entries on any line opposite a customers name will be exposed through the opening 21, and these entries are immediately associated with the column designations of the heading 22, so that the nature of any entry can be immediately ascertained. It will thus be seen that the posting from the sales-slip is greatly facilitated and expedited since the bookkeeper is not obliged to locate the entry by tracing out, in the old way, the name of the customer and then the column in which the entry is located. This latter process takes considerable time and is liable to many errors, especially with large sales-sheets. By use of the present invention, such objections are effectively overcome.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a stand, a frame plate normally disposed vertically above said stand, slieetdiolding and feeding means on the rear side of said frame plate, a pivotal connection between the lower edge of the said frame plate and the stand, and means for yieldably locking said pivotal connection whereby the frame plate will be normally supported over the stand but may be swung forward and downward toward the operator to permit the insertion or removal of a sheet.
In a device of the character described, the combination of a stand, a frame disposed normally above said stand, sheet holding and feeding means on the rear side of said frame, and a connection between the lower edge of said frame and the stand comprising overlapping ears on the support and frame respectively having engaging ribs and recesses on their opposed side faces, a pintle projecting from one of said ears through the other ear, a cap on the projecting end of the pintle, and a spring coiled around the pintle within the said cap, and bearing on the side of the adjacent ear.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a stand consisting of standards having extensible sections, a horizontal frame supported wholly above the stand,
hinges located below the frame for connecting the latter with the said sections, the axis of the hinges disposed in a common line to permit the frame to tilt forwardly on a horizontal axis for inserting a sheet, and a sheetfeeding means mounted on and movable with the frame.
In a device of the class described, the combination of a' supporting stand, a horizontally disposed frame mounted thereon and having a lOIlgltUCllIltll opening, a heading holder disposed adjacent the OPQlllHg and mounted on the front side of the frame, feed rollers mounted on the rear side of the f ame at a point above the opening for feeding a sheet, means on the frame below the rollers for engaging the edges of a sheet to alinc the same with the heading, and means disposed under the roller for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the openmg.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame having a view opening, said frame being normally disposed in an approximately vertical plane, sheet feeding means mounted on the frame above the opening, a shaft mounted on the frame below the opening, and upwardly extending fingers carried by the shaft for engaging the sheet at a point between the shaft and feeding means to hold the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame having a view opening, said frame being normally disposed in an approximately vertical plane, sheet feed- I ing means mounted on the frame above the opening, a shaft mounted on the frame below the openin upwardly-extending fingers carried by the frame for engaging the sheet at a point between the shaft and feeding means to hold the sheet in cooperative relation with the openin and a device acting on the shaft for yieldingly holding the fingers in. engagement with the sheet.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame having a view opening, said frame being norn'ially disposed in an approximately vertical plane, sheet feeding means mounted on the frame above the opening, a shaft mounted on the frame below the opening, upwardly-extending fingers carried by the frame for engaging the sheet at a point between the shaft and feeding means to hold the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening, a device acting on the shaft for yieldingly holding the fingers in engagement with the sheet, and devices on the frame for engaging the edges of the sheet.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting stand, a frame mounted thereon and having a view opening, sheet-feeding means consisting of shafts having coacting rolls, members on the frame for guiding a sheet between the rolls, devices for I the opening, and means for retracting the engaging the side edges of the sheet, a shaft l mounted on the frame, fingers carried by the shaft and rigidly mounted thereon for engaging the sheet to hold the same in cooperative relation with the view opening, and a device acting on the shaft for holding the fingers in operative or inoperative position.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a standard, a frame mounted thereon and provided with an opening, a heading holder disposed adjacent the opening, a pair of feed rollers for supporting a sheet on the frame, and spring fingers arranged behind the frame for engaging the rear side of the sheet to hold the same in co operative relation with the opening of the frame.
10. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a frame, a heading holder mounted thereon, feed rollers mounted on the frame for supporting a sheet, a plurality of sheet-engaging fingers for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the heading holder, a shaft on which the fingers are mounted, and means for yieldingly holding the shaft in position with the fingers engaging the sheet.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting frame having a. longitudinal opening, a heading holder disposed along the opening, feed rollers mounted on the frame for supporting a sheet, guides on the frame for engaging the edges of the sheet, and means for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening, said means including a plurality of sheet; engaging members movable to and from normal position for permitting the insertion of the sheet.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting frame having a longitudinal opening, a heading holder disposed along the opening, feed rollers mounted on the frame for supporting a sheet, guides on the frame for engaging the edges of a sheet, means for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening, said means including a plurality of yielding sheet-engaging fingers, a shaft supporting the fingers, a cam on the shaft, and a spring engaging the cam for yieldingly locking the shaft with the fingers engaging the sheet.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting frame having a line exposing opening, a heading holder adjacent the opening, a plurality of feed rollers on the frame for supporting the sheet thereon, a guide member on the frame disposed in tangential relation to the contacting point of the rollers, means for operating the rollers, a sheet-holder arranged to hold the sheet in cooperative relation with holder sheet.

In a device of the class described, a supporting frame having a horizontal opening, a heading holder disposed along the opening, a pair of feed rollers mounted on the frame at a. point above the opening, means for operating the feed rollers, a sheetengaging means for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening, a shaft supporting said means, means for actuating the shaft for moving the means into and out of operative position, a supporting stand, and means for hingedly connecting the frame on the upper end of the stand.
The combination of a frame consisting of a front plate and end plates, said front plate having a longitudinal openin a holder disposed above the opening and provided with oppositely-disposed guideways, a slip engaged in the guideways and having suitable designations, a transparent cover arranged in the guideways for covering the said slip, feed rollers mounted on the frame and provided with shafts supported by the end plates, means for guiding a sheet between the rollers, a shaft mounted on the end plates, resilient fingers carried by the last mentioned shaft for holding the sheet in cooperative relation with the opening, verti- Cally-disposed guides adjacent the ends of the opening for engaging the side edges of the sheet, a spring for yieldingly holding the fingers in engagement with the sheet, an adjustable stand, and a hinge between the stand and frame, said hinge having means for automatically holding the frame in upstanding position.
16. In a device of the character described, the combination of a stand having spaced standards, a frame plate normally spaced vertically above said stand and arranged in a substantially horizontal position, spaced alined pivotal connections between the lower edge of said frame plate and the standards, and sheet holding and feeding means mounted in the rear side of the said frame plate above the said pivotal connections, whereby the said frame plate may be swung forwardly and downwardly toward the operator to expose the rear side of said plate and cause the lower end of the latter to assume the uppermost position and thus permit the ready insertion and removal of the sheet.
