GIESE, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA COPYI-IOLDER Application filed September My invention relates to and has for a purpose the provision of acopy holder of simple, rugged and inexpensive construction, by which stenographers short hand notes, copy a or any matter to be transcribed, can be supported in the position most convenient for reading by the operator during the transcribing operation on a typewriter, to the end of enabling the operator to assume and maintain 1.) a natural and healthful erect position at the typewriter while reading the copy and con currently operating the typewriter.
It is a further purpose of my invention to provide a copy holder of the above described character embodying means for supporting a stenographers note book for movement in a manner to permit the lines of notes to be successively presented for reading by the operator with the utmost case, so as to obviate the nervous strain incident to constantly changing'the position of the eyes and body.
It is aother purpose of my invention to provide a copy holder which in its association with a typewriter is adjustable to accommodate the vision of the operator, as well as adjustable from a position above the typewriter for reading of the notes, to a nonobstructing position permitting access to the sheet in the typewriter for erasures, removal or replacenient.
I will describe only one form of copy holder embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.

my invention in its present embodiment comprises a base B in the form of a rectangular metal plate having secured theretoadjacent its corners, sockets 11 in which the feet 12 of a typewriter T are adapted to be received 65 so that the weight of the typewriter will maintain the plate in a fixed position on a desk. The plate is provided along one longitudinal edge with a lateral extension 13; and
a tubular post 14 is secured in upright posi- 60 tion on the extension by means of a flange 15 on the post, and fastening members 16 extending through the flange and extension.
Journaled in the bore 17 of the post which terminates at its lower end in a conical seat 55 18, is a spindle 19, the lower end of which is conical as indicated at 20 to rest inthe seat 18 and support the spindle for rotary movement in the standard. The spindle is provided with a pair of spaced apart annular 70 collars 21 defining a groove into which projects a set screw 22 threaded in the standard so as to prevent upward displacement of the spindle. The collars 21 coact with a third collar 23 to provide a radial bearing for the 7b spindle in the bore 17 and an annular flange 2a overlies the upper end of the standard to prevent foreign substances from entering the bore 17.
The upper end of the spindle 19 is inter- 8 nally threaded as indicated at 25 to threaded ly receive one end of a length of standard flexible metallic tubing which constitutes a deformable arm A for adjustably supporting from the base B, a holder H for a stenogra- 85 phers note book or other copy.
The holder H comprises a rectangular frame 26 having side members 27 and 28 and end members 29 and 30; and from the side member 28 projects an internally threaded 9U sleeve 31 into which the opposite end of the arm A is threadedly received so as to secure the arm to the frame. The frame forms asupport for a reel R comprising a shaft 32 to which isfixed a pair of disks 33 and 34 95 spanned adjacent their peripheries at equally spaced intervals circumferentially by rods 35 which are secured at their ends to the disks to thus rigidly connect the latter.
The shaft 32 is journaled at its end in slots m0 36 formed in the end members 29 and 30 of hooking the connector to one of the rods 35,
the frame 26 so as to support the reel for rotation manually in the frame by means of knobs 37 fixed to the extremities of the shaft.
The reel R constitutes a means for mounting a note book or other copy for rotation therewith to successively display lines of notes in the book above the upper edge of the side member 27 of the frame 26; and to this end I provide a connector C in the form of a bar 38 adapted to be extended between the covers of a fully opened note book, and terminating at its ends in laterally projecting hooks 39 which are adapted to have hooked connect-ion with any one of the rods so that with the bar engaging within the bight of the book, rotation of the latter by the reelin the direction of the arrow in Figure l will be effected upon turning one knob 37 or the other.
To guide the free end of the note book around the reelin contiguous relation thereto during rotation of the reel, I provide a cradle in the form of a plurality of curved guides 40 extending eccentrica-lly with respect to the axis of the reel and in sufficiently spaced relation to the rods 35 of the latter, to freely receive the thickness of the note book therebetween. The free ends of the guides 40 are bent upon themselves as indicated at 41 and secured to the side members 27 and 28 of the frame 26 so as to rigidly support the straps from the frame.
A resilient arm 42 is secured to the end member. 30 of the frame 26 and has journaled at its free end a roller 43 yieldingly urged by the arm against the periphery of the disk 34 which is provided with a continuous series of notches 44 for receiving the roller, to thus retain the reel in selected positions of adjustment incident to rotating the reel to successively display lines of notes in the note book.
Fromthe foregoing description, it will be manifest that with the base B placed beneath the typewriter T so as to be maintained against displacement by the weight of the typewriter, that by the simple expedient of suitably bending the flexible arm A, the position of the holder H above the typewriter can be varied vertically as well as forwardly and rearwardly with respect to an operator seated in front of the typewriter, and thus dispose the note book in the position most convenient for reading of notes therein by the operator when seated in a healthful erect position. The
' arm A forms a single means for enabling both of the aforementioned adjustments to be made, and it will be clear that the holder H can be readily swung about the axis of the spindle 19, either to the right or left of the typewriter so as to clear the latter and permit access to the sheet in the typewriter, for erasures, removal or replacement.
The note book is applied to the reel R by inserting the: connector C between the cover of the note book when fully opened, and then after which the reel is rotated to feed the note book between the reel and the cradle formed by the guide 40. The note book is readily removed from the reel by simply unhooking the connector and withdrawing the note book therewith so as to permit a page to be turned or other copy to-be substituted in the reel.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of copy holder embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a holder for a note book including a reel having longitudinally extending and circumferentially spaced rods, means for mounting the reel for rotation about a horizontal axis, a connector insertable in the bight of an opened note book between the covers thereof and having portions connectible to one of said rods to connect the note book to the reel for rotation thereby, and means for guiding the note book around the reel during rotation of the latter.
2. A device of the character described comprising a holder for a note book including a reel having longitudinally extending and circumferentially spaced rods, means for mounting the reel for rotation about a horizontal axis, a connector insertable in the bight of an opened note book between the covers thereof and having hooks at its free extremities connectible to one of said rods to connect the note book to the reel for rotation thereby, and means for guiding the note book around the reel during rotation of the latter.
3. A device of the character described comprising a holder for a note book including a reel having longitudinally extending and circumferentially spaced rods, means for mounting the reel for rotation about a horizontal axis, a connector insertable in the bight of an opened note book between the covers thereof and having portions connectible to one of said rods to connect the note book to the reel for rotation thereby, and means for guiding the note book around the reel during rotation of the latter.
4. A device of the character described comprising a frame, means for supporting the frame in elevated position, a reel journaled in the frame, and a connector insertable in the bight of an opened note book between the covers thereof and having portions engageabl'e with the reel to connect the note book to the reel for rotation therewith.
