To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTON Rent, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ladies l Iat-l asteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat fastening devices adapted to take the place of the hat pins usually employed by ladies to secure the hat in position, and it has for its object. to provide a device of simple and etlicient construction which may be conveniently secured in the crown of a hat where it may be left for constant use; said device being also adapted to be readily transferred from one hat to another.

A further object of the invention is to produce an article of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability and general etliciency.

WVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawings-13 igure 1 is a perspective view showing a hat equipped with a device constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion having been broken away to expose the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View enlarged taken through a portion of the crown and brim of the hat and showing the device in position for use. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, showing the hairengaging pins or prongs projected. Fig. 4 is a similar view, showlng the pins or prongs retracted. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view illustrating a portion of the operating rod and the manner of connecting the same with the pin-projecting hoop. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail View taken through the pinprojecting hoop and showing a portion of one of the hair-engaging pins connected therewith.

The body 1 of the improved device consists of a. ring or annulus which may be con veniently stamped from sheet metal, said ring being shaped to form an annular groove or trough 2 adjacent to the outer edge of which is preferably formed a bead 3. The inner side wall of the body member 1 is provided with apertures in which tubular guide members at are suitably secured, said guide members being preferably slightly curved or areuate and so disposed as to be approximately tangential to the inner side wall of the body member.

Disposed in the trough or groove of the body member is a ring 5 with which a plurality of curved or arcuate hairengaging pins 6 are pivotally connected, said pins be ing guided through the tubular guide members 41. The inner ends of the pins (3 are pref erably downturned and extended through apertures in the ring 5, which latter may be flattened at intervals, as will be clearly seen at 7 in Fig. (5. to enable said apertures to be coni 'eniently formed, as shown at 8, the downturned ends 9 of the pins being upset to form heads 10, whereby they are secured against withdrawal. It will be readily seen that by oscillating the ring 5 about its axis, the pins may be projected or retracted through the tubular guides 4, according to the direction in which the ring is moved. A post 11, which extends upwardly from the ring 5, is confined by a keeper 12 secured upon the outer wall of the trough-sha :)ed body to limit the movement of the ring and to prevent the pins being disengaged from the tubular guides.

Pivotally connected with the post 11 by means of a pin 13 is an arm 14: having a screw-threaded socket 15 adapted for the reception of the correspondingly scrcw threaded end of an operating rod 16, which may be provided at its outer extremity with an ornament 17 to resemble an ordinary hat pin. The screw-threaded end of the operating rod is provided with a sharp point 17 which will readily pierce the ordinary hat crown.

The body member 1 is preferably provided with an exterior covering 18 of textile or other suitable material which may be secured upon said body member by cement or in any convenient well known manner, said covering being preferably of a color and texture resembling that of the lining of the hat in connection with which the device is to be used.

In the operation of this invention, the body member 1, from which the operating rod 16 has been temporarily detached, is secured by stitching or otherwise within the crown of a hat, as shown at A in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it being understood that the outer side wall of the body member may be punctured at intervals adjacent to the bead 3 to receive the stitching which is indicated at 19 in Fig. 2. After the application of the body member, the operating rod is projected through the crown of the hat and placed in engagement with the socketed arm 14, as will be clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be readily seen that by manipulating the operating rod, the ring 5 may be oscillated, thus projecting or retracting the curved hair-engaging pins 6 according to the direction of oscillation; and it will be further seen that when projected, the pins 6 will extend in the direction of the center of the body member, thus engaging the hair of the wearer of the hat, assuming that the latter has been placed in position upon the head. Vhen the pins 6 are retracted, the

points of said pins will lie within the guiding tubes & and will in no wise interfere with the removal of the hat.

As will be readily seen, this improved device not only does not disfigure the hat to which it is applied but actually braces and reinforces the crown so as to aid in preserving the shape. The construction is simple, and the improved device is capable of ready application to a hat or of transfer from one hat to another, as may be desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is 2*- In a device of the character described, an annular trough-shaped body, a ring supported for oscillation therein, hair-engaging pins pivotally connected with the ring and guided through apertures in the inner wall of the body, a post connected with the ring, a socketed arm pivotally connected with the post, and an operating rod detachably connected with the socketed arm.
