To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND W. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in steam boilers and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is adapted to be positioned in the exhaust flue pipe of the ordinary cool: stove and to utilize the heat exhausted therefrom to generate steam within the boiler which is adapted to be carried ed and utilized for operating a motor or engine.
Another object is to provide a boiler dis posed within a suitable casing, the upper end of said casing being conically formed and extended for engagement in the flue opening in the stove and in the flue, said casing being disposed concentrically above the boiler and having an interior concentric shell adapted to provide passages for the heat to conduct the same around the sides of the boiler, and through suitable heat conducting pipes extending vertically through said boiler.
A further object is to provide a boiler having a plurality of heat conducting pipes extending therethrough, and a water inlet pipe automatically operated by a float valve which is adapted to maintain a constant level of the water within the boiler.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a boiler constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section of the float valve.
Referring to the drawings 5 indicates an outer casing which consists of a central vertical portion and the conical end portions 6. The extremities of these conical portions are longitudinally extended, as shown at 7. The lower end of this casing is adapted to be disposed within and supported by the sleeve 8 provided upon the rear of the stove which ordinarily receives the lower end of the flue Specification of Letters Patent.

pipe to conduct the exhaustel heat after the same has passed beyond the stove. The upper conical portion 6 of the casing is preferably detachable and may be secured upon the body portion of the casing by means of suitable fastening bolts 9 which extend through the cars 10 integrally formed upon the casing sections.
A conical shell 11 is disposed within the lower vertical portion 6 of the casing and has supported in concentric relation thereto suitable braces 12. The lower portion of this shell is longitudinally extended, as shown at 13, and disposed within the lower portion 7 of the casing. Upon the upper end of the shell 11 a cylindrical boiler 14: is arranged, and extends entirely through the central body portion of the casing 5.
Vertically disposed in the boiler 14 and suitably secured in the top and bottom thereof are a plurality of heat conducting pipes or tubes 15. These tubes are preferably dis posed upon opposite sides of the center of the boiler. Sleeves 16 and 17 are integrally formed within the boiler and the sleeve 16 receives the threaded end of a water supply pipe 17. An inlet pipe 18 also has threaded engagement in this sleeve and extends inwardly into the boiler 14. A float valve 19 is integrally formed upon one end of a float lever 20 and is pivotally disposed between ears 21 provided upon the pipe 18. The inner end of the lever 20 has secured thereon a suitable float 22 which is disposed between the conducting tubes 15, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The sleeve 17 is adapted to receive the threaded extremity of a steam conducting pipe 23 which carries off the steam from the boiler to the point at which the same is to be utilized.
In the operation of my improved boiler, the same is positioned between the sleeve 8 of the stove and one of the sections of the flue pipe. The heat which is exhausted from the stove after it has served its purpose is carried around the shell 11 and between the exterior of the boiler and the casing 5. Only a small percentage of the heat, however, is thus conducted, the greater portion of the same rising through the shell 11 and extending through the conducting tubes 15 which are disposed through the boiler. The water is admitted from the supply pipe 17, and when the float 22 has been raised to a predetermined level within the boiler, the valve 19 will be automatically closed to cut ofl the supply. Thus the water is maintained within the boiler at a constant level and the heat passing through the conducting tubes and around the boiler will generate the steam therein which is carried oif through the steam pipe 23. As the water is generated into steam and lowered within the boiler, the float 19 will open to again raise the water to its normal level, thus always providing for a constant supply.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a device which is very simple and is particularly adapted for use in connection with cook stoves and the like whereby the heat which is exhausted through the flue pipe and which heretofore was wasted is utilized to provide steam for driving a motor, small engine, or other mechanical contrivances which may be employed for various purposes around the premises.
While I have shown and described what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the same is capable of various minor modifications without materially departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a cylindrical casing hav ing a lower conically formed end, the extremity of said end being longitudinally extended and adapted to be disposed within the flue opening of a stove, the upper end of said casing having an annular flange, a conical top for said casing having an annular flange adapted to be seated on the flange of said casing and secured thereto, the upper end of said top being longitudinally extended and adapted to be disposed within the flue pipe, of a boiler shell concentrically arranged in said casing, a conical shell arranged in concentric spaced relation to the lower conical end of said casing and adapted to support the boiler shell, braces between the conical shell and the casing, the lower end of said shell being extended into the extended extremity of the conical lower end of the casing disposed in concentric relation thereto, connections between said boiler shell and the casing, an inlet pipe extending into said shell, a steam pipe communicating with said shell adjacent to its upper end, a plurality of heat conducting tubes extending vertically through said boiler shell open at each end, the heat exhausted from the stove being adapted to pass upwardly between the conical shell and the casing and around the boiler shell, the greater portion thereof passing through the conical supporting shell and the. boiler tubes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
