WILTJAM B. HUGHES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
GAS-PRODUCER.
Application filed November 9, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \ViLLiAM B. Hucirns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a gas producer having improved means for sealing its bottom and removing the ashes therefrom.
The features characterizing my improvements are disclosed in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a gas producer embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 1, with modified details; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The apparatus embodying my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises the foundation 1 containing the central cavity 2 and the laterally extending pit- 3. A circular sealing channel at has a bottom 4 which rests upon the-foundation, a circular inner wall or flange 4" rising from the bottom 4 around the top of the cavity 2, and a circular outer wall t concentric with the Wall 4". The channel- 4 is provided with a removable bottom plate 4 to prevent wear of the bottom at ly the ashes and the bottom has the aperture a therethrough by which ashes are discharged from the channel to the pit 3. A hollow vertical column'5 provides a step hearing for the blast pipe 6 which is revoluble about a vertical axis and contains holes 6 for admitting blast thereto from the blow pipe 7. This latter pipe provides a )assage through the foundation and the column to a space 5 surrounding the holes,.
the blast passing thereby through the blast pipe and being difiused in the body 8 of the producer by the superposed deflectors 6 and 6 fixed to the top of the blast pipe. A circular bottom member 9 (serving as a sup porting table, a grinder and a conveyer) is provided with a collar 9 which is fixed on the pipe 6, being engaged by the collar 6 thereof. The body 0 t e member 9 has the conical inner portion 9" and the flat portion 9 extending outwardly therefrom with the cylindrical part9- extending downwardly around the art 4 in the channel 4 to effect a seal. Helical ribs or blades 9", for break- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing up and moving ashes, are formed on the top of the parts 9 and 9, and wings or scrapers 9 for moving the ashes are fixed to thevpart 9 and extend outwardly therefrom in the channel 4. A cylindrical apron 9 is .fixed to and extends downwardly from the part 9 into the circular channel 5 formed on the top of the part 5 to hold water and provide a seal for preventing loss from the blast. Lugs 9 are formed on the bottom of the part 9 and are adapted to be engaged by a pin.9 movable in a stationary bearing 9 by means of a lever 9 pivot-ally connected thereto and to the fulcrum 9 Theproducer body 8 is provided with the conical ash hopper 8*, concentric with the channel 8 to seal the bottom of the producer.
As shown in Fig. l, the part 10 is provided with brackets 10 which engage brackets t on the part 4, by which the part 10 is held stationary. A poker or stirring bar 11 is -movable through the bearing i on the part 4 and the bearing 10 of the part 10 between the parts 8 and 9 to break up the ashes between the hopper 8 and the bottom part- 9. Thebody S is revolved by providing it with-a circular rack-8 and engaging the rack by a revolving pinion 8 It will be understood that when the producer is revolved the weight and friction of the ashes which have passed from the .part- 8 to the part 9 will revolve the latter, when free. \Vhen the bar '11 is inserted, the ashes between the revolving parts 8 and 9 are broken up, the parts 9 carrying the ashes outwardly to the channel 4: and the scrapers or wings 9 carrying the ashes around the channel to the outlet 4, whence they are de livered to the pit 3 and removed therefrom in any suitable manner. If the ashes solidify sot-hat they are not satisfactorily broken up with the part 9 revolving, it is held stationary by engaging the pin 9 with :1. lug 9 whilethe part 8 revolves, the ribs 9 still acting to pass the ashes outwardly to body, en apron the channel whence they are removed on releasing the port 9.
As shown in Fig. 2, the pert 10 has journnled on the exterior thereof the rollers or Wheels 1O Which are adapted to move on the circular track t fixed? within the part 48, and secured to the port 10 is a poker or stirring bar 12 Which extends inwardly between the ports 8 end 9 to break up the ashes. ing 41 in the part l to engage e. bracket 10 on the part 10, whereby the latter can he held against movement or permitted to move. I
The producer body is provided with the brackets 8 which carry Wheels 8 and the on which the.
part. l carries the track 4 wheels are adapted move, the body being revolved by means of e circular reek 8 fixed thereon and engaged by revolving pinion 8 Having described my invention claim:
1. A gas pr duce? having revoinoie tom'with sore.
is thereon, in combination ,With' a body reyoluble independently of said bottom.
gas i =cduce having achennel, n revoluble' hody, means depending into said channel for sealing the hot-tom of said body, a revoluole bottom member having sealing means depending into said channel, and one or more scrapers carried by said bottom inember end acting in said channel;
3. A gas producer having a circular chan nel, a revoluble botto n having scrapers thereon movable in seidwhennel. rev olnble body shove said ohttoni.
1s. A gas producer havinga revolnble sealing; means connecting A rod 13 is movable through it been.
e'rnevs said body and apron, a. stationery channe into which said apron depends, a revolnoie bottom member adapted for discheiging into said channel, and revoluhle scrapers carried by said bottom member acting in said channel.
5.,A gas produce? having a. stationary channel e revolu ole body having e depend ing apron, means connected with said chennel and apron foi sealing the bottom of said body, a revoluhle bottom member having" on 5 apron denending into said channel, end one bottom member.
In Witness whereof 'l have hereunto my name this 28th o'i Qctoher, 1909, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
'B. HUGHES.
