To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KENNETH K. MGLEOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Bear, county of Ramsey, and State of Minnesota, have invented a Combined Speed-Indicator and Faucet Control adapted for use in connection with the operation of cream-separators and other devices of similar character; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact specification thereof.
My invention has special reference to ap paratus for separating liquids of dissimilar specific gravity by centrifugal force, and While it has characteristics which render it particularly effective when utilized in combination with apparatus for separating cream from the whole milk, the invention, as to some of its features at least, may be advantageously embodied in apparatus designed for other purposes, such as apparatus for separating various liquids or granular substances by centrifugal force.
In the operation of a cream separator, it is highly essential that the speed of the skimming bowl should be maintained at a definite predetermined speed to produce a delivery of cream in a substantially uniform condition. It is well known in the art that variations in the speed of operation are attended by corresponding variations in quality of the cream, as well as certain variations in the efficiency of the apparatus. In accordance with the prior practice the operator is instructed to maintain a certain predetermined speed to obtain a desired result; however, it is readily seen that this is practically impossible to accomplish without any definite means for indicating the present comparative speed.
My invention has for an object to provide a means for overcoming the defects above referred to, and which will enable the apparatus to operate at a practically uniform rate of efliciency.
My invention is more particularly addressed to providing improvements in a cream separating apparatus whereby separated. cream may be delivered in condition which as to percentage of butter fat is substantially unvarying, or which bears some other definite or predetermined relation between the speed of the skimming bowl. and the rate of delivery of whole milk thereto, regardless of any variations of demand within the capacity of the apparatus.

Other objects of my invention are to provide an apparatus of the character referred to, which is automatic in its operation and easily controlled, also one which at the same time is safe and reliable and efficient in the hands of an inexperienced operator, by providing a device adapted to indicate the comparative speed of operation at all times, and arranged in cooperative relation with a faucet controlling the flow of milk to the skimming bowl, whereby variations of speed of said skimming bowl will be attended by corresponding variation in the supply of whole milk thereto and in substantial unison with said variations of speed.
The invention also aims to safeguard the operator from the danger attending an excessive speed of the skimming bowl by providing a sound-alarm which is automatic in its operation and adapted to warn the operator when the speed attains a predetermined limit, which sound-alarm will operate continuously through the duration of such excessive speed and will cease when the speed is reduced beyond the scope of the predetermined limit of danger.
An additional object of this invention is to provide means whereby the speed multiplying mechanism between the operating crank and the skimming bowl will cease operation in unison with the stopping of the operating crank, independent of the skimming bowl, thereby obviating an excessive wear of the driving mechanism, and also enabling the entire driving mechanism to be instantaneously stopped in case of accident: It should be noted that the centrifugal governor mechanism is connected with the driving mechanism in such manner that when the crank and driving mechanism are stopped the governor ceases its rotation causing the speed indicator to drop back to position of no speed and also causing the faucet controlling device to check the flow of whole milk to the skimming bowl.
To enable those skilled in the art in which my invention appertains, to more thoroughly understand the novel parts, elements, and features of construction, as well as to comprehend the advantages derived thereby, a particular embodiment of my invention, together with modifications of certain elements and features thereof, is more fully set forth .in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are referred to herein and form a part hereof, the form of apparatus shown being designed for operation in connection with cream separators; however the actual scope of my invention is more particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating the application of my invention to a cream separating apparatus. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical cross-section showing the governor speed-indicating mechanism and soundalarm. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail showing the indicator bar and the faucet control lever in horizontal section. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail showing operative connections between the faucet and its controlling lever, also illustrating the float valve. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken on line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the specification and the several views of the drawings.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated consists of an apparatus for separating cream from the whole milk by subjecting same to the influence of a centrifugal .force, and delivering same at a substantially predetermined denslty, and which for practical purposes will contain an unvarying percentage of butter fat. This apparatus comprises in general a separating bowl adapted for rotation at a high Velocity, and
actuated by a high geared driving mechanism adapted for operation by hand, a whole milk reservoir preferably arranged in suitable relation with said skimming bowl whereby the milk may be delivered from said reservoir to said separating bowl by gravity, said flow of milk being controlled by a suitable faucet. To attain the object of my invention I provide a centrifugal governor mechanism having operative connec tion with said driving mechanism and arranged in cooperative relation with a suitable speed indicator and sound alarm, whereby the particular speed of operation will be at all times apparent to the operator, thus enabling the operator to maintain a uniform speed according to predetermined requirements. The sound alarm is so constructed and arranged in relation to the governor mechanism that an excessive speed of operation will produce a rapid vibratory intonation of the alarm bell, which will continue throughout the duration of such excessive speed, thereby warning the operator of any speed which could be considered dangerous, and which might possibly cause the disintegration of the skimming bowl.
The faucet for controlling the milk supply from the reservoir to the skimming bowl is actuated by a suitable lever having operative connection with the speed indicating mechanism and adjusted in suitable relation whereby the flow or delivery of milk to the skimming bowl is varied in accordance with the variations in speed of said skimming bowl, and in substantial unison with said variations, thus maintaining a uniform relation between the cylindrical strata of the separated components and thereby enabling the separated cream to maintain a practically uniform percentage of butter fat, regardless of the variation in speed; however, this method causes the quantitative rate of delivery of cream to vary in substantial unison with the variation of the speed of said bowl.
It is not to be understood by the term substantial unison that the relative variations in the supply, demand, speed, or condition of the various components of the fluid and the centrifugal force of the mechanism acting upon same, are strictly simultaneous, the essential in this regard is that the variations are produced promptly enough to maintain the apparatus in relation therewith and the fluid operated upon, in a practically predetermined condition. The eX- pressions definite quantitative relation and predetermined relation as used herein, are not to be understood as necessarily referring to unchangeable relations between the supply or flow of fluid and the demand by the comparative centrifugal energy. It is intended that these expressions shall include within their scope such a relation between the centrifugal force and the supply of whole milk as will produce practically uniform results.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable frame or inclosure into which the various parts of the apparatus are mounted, and provided at its upper portion with means for supporting the whole milk reservoir 2. A receptacle 3 extends laterally from the member 1 and provides a suitable inclosure and supporting means for the skimming bowl 4: and various parts incidental to the operation of same.
In order to provide means for operating the skimming bowl at a suitable speed, I provide an increase-speed sprocket and chain drive mechanism comprising a driving sprocket 5 mounted upon a shaft 6 which is transversely journaled in member 1 and provided with a crank 7 by which same may be manipulated, said driving sprocket 5 impels the driven pinion 8 through any suitable medium, as the sprocket chain 9, driven pinion 10, driving sprocket 11, and sprocket chain 12, respectively, whereby the driven pinion 8 is operated at a comparatively high speed, in accordance with the requirements of this mechanism. Said pinion 8 is loosely mounted upon a transversal shaft 13 and adapted to impel the driving spiral gear Lt, in one direction only, by means of a suitable ratchet device cbmprising a spring actuated plunger 15 slidingly mounted in a transversal cham ber within the driving spiral gear 14, said plunger being adapted to engage a corresponding tapered socket 16 provided in the adjacent side face of pinion 8. Thus the sprocket 8 is adapted to impart a rotary motion to the driving spiral gear 14, which in turn engages a driven spiral gear 17 provided upon the spindle of the skimming bowl 4, and providing a means whereby the rotation of all members of the driving mechanism, from the operating crank 7 to the driven pinion 8, inclusive, may be instantly checked without interfering with the continued rotation of the skimming bowl and the spiral gears until the momentum of same becomes spent.
In accordance with a device of this character the effectof the delivery of milk to the skimming bowl and subjecting same to the influence of the centrifugal force thereof, causes the components to arrange themselves in their respective vertical strata of cylindrical form according to the comparative weight of the relative components, thus during operation at an average speed at which this apparatus is more particularly designed, the heavier component, or skim milk, will seek its position between the shell of the skimming bowl and the outer skimming device 18, and will be forced upwardly by gravitation of the inflowing whole milk to its highest point of elevation 19, from whence it is delivered into its respective receiving chamber provided with a tube 20 by which it is conveyed to any suitable receptacle. The action of this centrifugal force upon the skim milk causes it to force all cream inwardly, forming a cylindrical strata within the wall of the inner skimming device 21, from which it is also forced upwardly to a point 22, at which same is de livered into its respective receiving chamber, which is likewise provided with a tube 23 adapted to convey the separated cream to any suitable receptacle. The space between the outer skimming device 18 and inner skimming device 21 is occupied by unseparated cream and milk and forms the average line of separation between same, thus it is seen that an excessive speed of the skimming bowl would cause the cream to be forced outwardly and would tend to vary the corresponding relation of the average line of separation from its predetermined relation to the respective skimming devices, thus creating a corresponding variation in the quality of the separated cream delivered therefrom. It may also be noted that a reduction of speed would cause the average line of separation to approach the inner skimming device thereby delivering a cream having a lower percentage of butter fat, and enabling a higher percentage of butter fat to remain in the skim milk, owing to imperfcct separation caused thereby. Thus it is obvious that a uniform rate of separation may be attained by maintaining a uniform rate of speed. However, in amanually operated mechanism, slight variations in speed are practically obviated. by varying the flow of milk to the skimming bowl in accordance with the variations of the speed thereof, or in substantial unison with the variation of demand for milk supply which variations of demand are determined by the variations of speed of the bowl. To accomplish this result, I provide a centrifugal governor comprising the usual weight arms 24; pivotally secured to the fixed head 25 which is rigidly secured upon the transverse shaft 26 and provided with sprocket teeth adapted for engagement with the high-speed driving chain 12 by which said governor and shaft may be rotatively impelled. The sliding head 27 is loosely mounted upon the shaft 26 and is provided with an inwardly projecting pin engaging a longitudinal groove formed upon the shaft thereby securing same in positive rotative relation with said shaft while permitting freedom of longitudinal movements thereon. Said sliding head is connected to the weight arms 24 by means of suitable links 28 and is normally thrust from the fixed head by means of a compression spring 29 until subjected to the action of the governor weight arms. The spring 29 bears upon an adjustable abutment 30 which loosely encompasses the shaft 26 and is provided with an externally threaded portion adapted to engage a correspondii'ig internally threaded receptacle formed in the fixed head 25, whereby the comparative resilient force acting in opposition to the centrifugal force of the weightarms may be varied to suit special conditions of operation.
The indicating bar 31 is slidingly mounted in the stationary transverse tube 32 and is provided with a suitable slot to receive the upper portion of the indicator lever 64-, having operative engagement therewith, whereby longitudinal movements may be imparted thereto from said. lever 34. Cor responding slots are provided in the upper and lower sides of the tube 32 to permit oscillatory movements of the lever 34- during its course of operation. The lever 84L is pivotally mounted at 35 and provided at its lower portion with suitable trunnions which play in the circumferential groove 36 formed upon the sliding head 27 thus providing means whereby a rectilineal motion is imparted to the indicator bar 31 by the centrifugal governor mechanism, the value of said movements of the indicator bar hav ing a constant predetermined relation to the movements of the sliding head 27 whereby the various positions of the indicator bar will correspond with definite values of speed conditions existing in said governor. As the governor is connected in such manner as to maintain a constant speed relation to the speed of the crank, also the skimming bowl, a graduated scale is provided upon the upper side of said indicator bar whereby its comparative positions may be registered by a fixed indicator 37 which is secured upon the casing 1.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings the scale is graduated into convenient portions to indicate the revolutions per minute of the crank, and is also indexed to show the comparative value of the flow of whole milk to the skinnning bowl in figures indicating pounds per hour however it is not essential that the numerical index should be confined to the speed valve of any one revolving part, as the object of my invention could be fully realized by providing a single reference character to register with the fixed indicator when operating at a predetern'iined rate of speed, thus means are provided which will indicate the comparative relation of existing speed of the entire mechanism to the speed at which it is predetermined as desirable to maintain operation, thereby enabling the operator to maintain a predetermined rate of speed provided that a due amount of care and observation be exercised.
In accordance with the object of my invention I provide a sound alarm adapted to warn the operator of excessive or dangerous speed. This device, as herein shown, comprises a gong 38 adjustably secured upon a supporting member 39, and arranged in suitable relation to the governor mechanism whereby suitable striking members 40 may be secured upon the governor arms and adapted for engagement with said bell during each revolution when the speed of the governor attains a predetermined limit, thus causing sufficient spread of the governor arms to bring the circumferential course of the striking members int-o operative relation with the position of the bell.
The whole milk is conveyed from the reservoir to the skimming bowl through a tube 41 in which is interposed a suitable faucet 42, which faucet is preferably of similar form to the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, and comprises a tapered valve member 43 mounted in a correspondingly tapered seat; said valve member being transversally pierced to register with the diametrically opposite openings provided in the valve seat which communicate with the respective portions of the conducting tube 41. In accordance with this invention means are provided whereby said valve is rendered operative by said centrifugal governor to valve in the same degree and in substantial unison with the variations in the conditions of speed in said separating bowl. This result is accomplished by a controlling lever 44 provided at one end with a transverse head, oscillatively journaled in a suitable socket provided in a supporting bracket 45, and provided at its other end with a means for operatively engaging the indicator lever In the head portion of said controlling lever I provide a vertical opening 46 of suitable conformity to receive the downwardly projecting shank 47 of the valve member 43, said shank being preferably square 01' equiangular in cross-section; thus means are provided whereby a rectilinear movement of the sliding head 27 imparts an oscillative movement to said valve, bearing a corresponding quantitative relation to said rectilinear movements of the sliding head. The transverse aperture through the valve member 43 is so proportioned to the lead openings provided in the valve seat whereby the degree of restriction to the flow of milk therethrough is varied in a practically definite proportion to the variations in the speed of said mechanism, which variation is efiective during a predetermined range of speed conditions in the mechanism and completely closes the course of flow of said fiuid at apredetermined mean speed of possible separation; however, the transversal opening in the valve member 43 is circumferentially elongated whereby an excessive speed of the mechanism causes the valve relation to maintain full opening.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings the means whereby operative connection is effected between the controlling lever 44 and the indicating lever 34, consists of a forked head portion 48 provided with an integral member 49 by which operative engagement is effected with the indicating lever 34 during all movements occasioned by increased ate of speed conditions and by which the relation of the valve members are varied to permit an increase in the rate of flow of fluid therethrough; said fork also comprises an integral member 50 which is adapted for engagement with the indicating lever 34 during such movements thereof as may be caused by a decrease in the rate of speed conditions and is thereby adapted to impart corresponding movements to the valve member 43 tending to close the restricted opening. The integral member 50 is of shorter configuration than the member 49 and is adapted to maintain its respective engagement with the indicator lever 34 during its various positions assumed at all speeds above a predetermined limit of mean speed, its relation of length being suitablv designed whereby its path of movement leads it from the course of the indicating lever 34 and thereby efiecting disengagement therewith, substantially as indicated in dotted line in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This result may likewise be accomplished as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings in which the indicating lever 34 is formed of suitable length to utilize its corresponding path of movement to effect its disengagement with the member 50 at a predetermined limit of mean speed; however, the comparative relation of gyration is of more positive nature in the controlling lever 44 than in the indicating lever 34:, therefore it is deemed preferable to utilize the construction set forth in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The above method of effecting disengagement between the indicating lever 3st and the controlling lever 4% provides a convenient means whereby the crank and driving mechanism may be stopped and enabling the operator to open the valve 43 by manipulating the controlling lever a l independent of the indicating lever and governor.mechanism. This advantage is readily appreciated when it is desired to flush the skimming bowl with water after normal operation of the mechanism has ceased.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings I have illustrated a float valve device comprising a valve seat 51 formed in the vertical portion of the conducting-tube 11, and adapted for engagement with a fluted needle valve mem ber Said valve member is rendered operative by a suitable float 53 to which it is secured and which is arranged in the receiving cup 54L into which the whole milk is discharged during its course of flow to the skimming bowl. This valve mechanism provides a convenient means for checking the flow of milk into the cup 54 when the level thereof within said cup attains a predetermined limit, thereby obviating the overflow of milk from said cup in case of some contingency tending to check its flow into the skimming bowl.
In accordance with the object of my invention, the details of construction may be modified by substituting mechanical equivalents. In Fig. i of the drawings I have illustrated a modified construction in which the tube 82 is not used, the indicator bar 31 being mounted in suitable bushings 55 which are respectively secured in the casing member 1. It should likewise be noted that various mechanical substitutions could be effected to ac complish the results attained for producing a sound alarm which would operate continuously throughout the duration of speed conditions in excess of a predetermined limit. It is likewise apparent that various mechanical substitutes could be efficiently utilized when providing means whereby a rectilinear movement of the controlling means, as a centrifugal governor, would impart an operative movement to a valve member in a corresponding degree of quantitative relation, to maintain a predetermined relation between the speed condition in the skimming bowl and the rate of flow of liquid thereto. Thus it is obvious from the foregoing that modifications may be effected in the construction hereinbefore set forth without departing from the true and original purport of my invention, therefore I do not confine the scope of the appended claims to the details of construction hcreinbefore set forth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is the following:
1. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the operating speed of a cream separator mechanically acting upon same, the combination with a controlling means constructed to be rendered op erative by variations in the speed conditions of said cream separator, of a valve for controlling the flow of milk to said cream separator, and operative connection between said controlling means and one member of said valve, the members of said valve being so shaped with relation to their relative movement that the flow of whole milk varies in practically the same degree and in substan tial unison with the variations in the speed conditions of said cream separator, substantially for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the operating speed of a centrifugal separator mechanically acting upon said fluid, the combination with a controlling means constructed to be rendered operative by variations in the speed conditions of said separator, of a valve for controlling the flow of said fluid, and operative connection between said controlling means and one member of said valve, the members of said valve being so shaped with relation to their relative movements that during a predetermined range of speed conditions the -f1ow of fluid varies in practically the same degree and in substantial unison with the variations in the speed condition of said separator, substantially for purposes set forth.
3. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the speed condition of a cream separator acting upon said fluid, the combination with a conduit for conveying said whole milk to said cream separator and a restrictedpassage provided in said conduit, of a centrifugal controlling means having connection with the operating mechanism of said separator and rendered operative by variations of speed conditions in said mechanism, a valve adapted to vary the size of the restricted passage, and means connecting said valve to said controlling means whereby the operative movement of said controlling means will impart a corresponding movement to one member of said valve, said valve being so shaped and proportioned as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of the whole milk and the speed condition of said cream separator, substantially for the purposes set forth.
4:. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the speed condition of a separating mechanism adapted to separate certain components of said fluid and subject to certain variations in speed which create corresponding variations in demand for delivery of said whole milk thereto, the combination with a conduit provided with a restricted passage and adapted to convey said whole milk to said separating mechanism, of a centrifugal controlling means arranged in operative relation with said separating mechanism, a spring arranged to oppose the centrifugal force to said controlling means and provided with means for adjustment, a valve rendered operative by said controlling means for varying the size of said restricted passage, said valve being so proportioned with relation to the relative movements of its members as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of said whole milk and the speed condition in said separating mechanism, substantially for purposes set forth.
5. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition of a mechanical agent adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, and subject to certain variations in speed which create corresponding variations in demand for the delivery of said fluid thereto, the combination with a conduit adapted to convey said fluid and provided with a restricted passage, of a centrifugal controlling means arranged in operative relation with said mechanical agent, a spring arranged to oppose the cen-- trifugal force of said controlling means and provided with means for adjustment, an indicating member rendered operative by said controlling means and adapted to indicate the comparative relation between the existing speed condition of said mechanical agent and a predetermined speed condition thereof, a valve rendered operative by said controlling means for varying the size of the restricted passage, said valve being so proportioned with relation to the relative movements of its integral members as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of the fluid and the speed condition in said mechanical agent, substantially for purposes set forth.
6. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition of a mechanical agent adapted to separate certain components of said fluid and subject to certain variations in speed which create corresponding variations in demand for delivery of said fluid thereto, the combination with a conduit adapted to convey said fluid and provided with a restricted passage, of a centrifugal controlling means arranged in operative relation with said mechanical agent, a spring arranged to oppose the centrifugal force of said controlling means and provided with means for adjustment. a sound alarm arranged in operative relation to said controlling means and rendered operative by a condition of high speed in said mechanical agent and adapted to operate continuously throughout the duration of any speed in excess of a predetermined limit of speed thereto, a valve rendered operative by said controlling means for varying the size of the restricted passage, said valve being proportioned with relation to the relative movements of its integral members as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation be tween the flow of the fluid and the speed c0ndition in said mechanical agent, substantially for purposes set forth.

In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition of a mechanical agent adapted to separate certain components of said fluid and subject to certain variations in speed which create cor responding variations in demand for delivery of said fluid thereto, the combination with a conduit adapted to convey said fluid and provided with a restricted passage, of a centrifugal controlling means arranged in operative relation with said mechanical agent, a spring arranged to oppose the centrifugal force of said controlling means and provided with means for adjustment, an indicatingmember rendered operative by said controlling means and adapted to indicate the comparative relation of existing speed condition of said mechanical agent to a predetermined speed condition thereof, a sound alarm arranged in operative relation to said controlling means and rendered operative by a condition of high speed in said mechanical agent and adapted to operate continuously throughout the duration of any speed in excess of a predetermined limit of speed thereof, a valve rendered operative by said controlling means for varying the size of the restricted passage, said valve being so proportioned with relation to the relative movements of its integral members as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation be tween the flow of the fluid and the speed condition in said mechanical agent, substantially set forth.

In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of'a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, the con'ibination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve adapted to vary the size of said restricted passage, and means connecting said valve to said controlling means whereby the flow of said fluid is varied in the same degree and in substantial unison with the variations of the speed condition in said separating bowl, substantially for purposes set forth.
9. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, the combination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve rendered operative by said centrifugal governor and adapted to vary the size of said restricted opening, said valve being proportioned in suitable relation to the relativemovements of its integral members whereby a predetermined quantitative relation is maintained between the flow of said fluid and the speed condition in said mechanical agent, and means for varying the comparative degree of said relation, substantially for purposes set forth.
10. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between a variable speed condition in a centrifugal separating bowl and the flow of a fluid thereto, the combination of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said mechanism, a controlling means having operative connection with said governor and adapted to vary the flow of said fluid to said separating bowl in substantial unison with the variations in the speed of said bowl and in definite quantitative relation to the variations of demand thereby, and. an indicating member operatively connected to said governor and bean ing a definite relation of operation with said controlling means and provided with means for indicating the comparative speed of operation and the comparative rate of fiow of said fluid to the bowl, substantially for purposes set forth.

In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between a variable speed condition, in a centrifugal separating bowl and the flow of a fluid thereto, the combination with a centrifugal governor, of a controlling means arranged in operative relation therewith and adapted to vary the flow of said fluid in substantial unison with variations in the speed of said bowl and in definite quantitative relation to said variations, said controlling means being rendered operative throughout a range of speed varying from a mean speed of possible separation to the average normal speed of separation, substantially for purposes set forth.
12. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a skimming bowl and a driving mechanism for operating same, of a governor mechanism adapted for rotation at a speed of constant relation to the speed of said skimming bowl, a controlling means arranged in cooperative relation with said governor adapted to vary the flow of milk to the skimming bowl in substantial unison wit-h the variations in the speed of said bowl and in definite quantitative relation to the variations of demand resulting from said variations in speed, and an indicating member slidingly mounted for longitudinal movements operatively connected with said governor and bearing definite quantitative relation of movement therewith, said indicating member being provided with a scale adapted to indicate the comparative relation of speed of the mechanism, substantially for purposes set forth.

In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a skimming bowl and driving mechanism adapted to impel same, of a governor mechanism adapted for rota tion in constant relation to the speed of said skimming bowl, an indicator bar arranged in cooperative relation with said governor mechanism and adapted to indicate the comparative relation of the existing speed to a predetermined rate of speed, substantially for purposes set forth.
14:. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a skimming bowl and a driving mechanism for operating same, of a governor mechanism adapted for rotation at a speed having constant relation to the speed of said skimming bowl, a ratchet clutch interposed in the course of said driving mechanism at a position relatively near its engagement with the spindle of said bowl, said clutch enabling said driving mechanism to impel the bowl in one direction but permitting freedom of forward rotation of said bowl independent of said driving mechanism, and a controlling means arranged in cooperative relation with said governor adapted to vary the flow of milk to the skimming bowl in substantial unison with the variations in the speed of said bowl and in definite quantitative relation to the variations of demand resulting from said variations in speed, substantially for purposes set forth.
15. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between. the flow of a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, the combination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve adapted to vary the size of said restricted passage and provided with a controlling lever adapted for oscillative move ments therewith, and means connecting said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, whereby said controlling lever is enabled to operate independently of said controlling means when at its position corresponding to the limit of minimum speed of said mechanism, substantially for purposes set forth.
16. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the speed condition of a cream separator acting upon said fluid, the combination with a conduit for conveying said whole milk to said cream separator and a restricted passage provided in said conduit, of a centrifugal controlling means having connection with the operating mechlever provided at its head portion with a shoulder journaled in a supporting bracket said shoulder being axially pierced to operatively engage the shank portion of the moving member of said valve, a lever operatively connecting the free end of said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, said valve being so shaped and proportioned as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of the whole milk and the speed condition of said cream separator, substantially for purposes set forth.
17. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the operating speed of a centrifugal separator mechanically acting upon said fluid, the combination with a controlling means constructed to be rendered operative by variations in the speed conditions of said separator, of a valve for controlling the flow of said fluid and provided with a controlling lever adapted for oscilla tive movements therewith, and means connecting said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, said engagement with said controlling lever being effected in such manner that it is enabled to operate independently of said controlling means when at its position corresponding to the limit of minimum speed of said mechanism, and the members of said valve being so shaped with relation to their relative movements that during a predetermined range of speed conditions the flow of the fluid varies in practically the same degree and in substantial unison with the variations in the speed condition of said separator, substantially for the purposes set forth.
18. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, the combination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of acentrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve rendered operative by said centrifugal governor and adapted to vary the size of said restricted opening, a controlling lever provided at its head portion with a shoulder journaled in a supporting bracket, said shoulder being axially pierced to operatively engage the shank portion of the moving member of said valve, a lever operatively connecting the free end of said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, said valve being proportioned in suitable relation to the relative movements of its integral members whereby a predetermined quantitative relation is maintained between the flow of said fluid and the speed condition in said mechanical agent, and means for varying the comparative degree of said relation, substantially for the purposes set forth.

In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to. separate certain components of said fluid, the combination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve rendered operative by said centrifugal governor and adapted to vary the size of said restrict-ed opening, and provided with a controlling lever adapted for oscillative movement therewith, and means connecting said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, said engagement with said controlling lever being effected in such manner that it is enabled to operate independently of said controlling means when at its position corresponding to the limit of minimum speed of said mechanism, said valve being proportioned in suitable relation to the relative movements of its integral members whereby a predetermined quantitative relation is maintained between the flow of said fluid and the speed condition in said mechanical agent, and means for varying the comparative degree of said relation, substantially for the purposes set forth.

In a device 101' maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of a fluid and the speed condition in a separating mechanism provided with a separating bowl adapted to separate certain components of said fluid, the combination with a conduit having a restricted passage and adapted for conveying said liquid to said separating bowl, of a centrifugal governor rendered operative by variations in the speed condition of said separating bowl, a valve adapted to vary the size of said restricted passage, a controlling lever provided at its head portion with a shoulder journaled in the supporting bracket said shoulder being axially pierced to operatively engage the shank portion of the moving member of said valve, and a lever operatively connecting the free end of said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, substantially for the purposes set forth.

In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the speed condition of a cream separator acting upon said fluid, the combination with a conduit for conveying said whole milk to said cream separator and a restricted passage provided in said conduit, of a centrifugal controlling means having connection with the operating mech anism of said separator and rendered operative byvariations of speed conditions in said mechanism, a valve adapted to vary the size of said restricted passage and provided with a controlling lever adapted for oscillative movement therewith, and means connecting said controlling lever to said centrifugal controlling means in such manner that it is enabled to operate independently of said controlling means when at its position corresponding to the limit of minimum speed of said mechanism, said valve being so shaped and proportioned as to maintain a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of the Whole milk and the speed condition of said cream separator, substantially for the purposes set forth.
22. In a device for maintaining a predetermined quantitative relation between the flow of whole milk and the operating speed of a cream separator mechanically acting upon same, the combination with a controlling means constructed to be rendered operative by variations in'the speed condition of said cream separator, of a valve for controlling the flow of milk to said cream separator and provided with a controlling lever adapted for oscillative movements therewith, and means connecting said controlling lever to said centrifugal governor, said engagement with said controlling lever being effected in such manner that it is enabled to operate independently of said controlling means when at its position corresponding to the limit of minimum speed of said mechanism, the members of said valve being so shaped with relation to their relative movement that the flow of whole milk varies in practically the same degree and in substantial unison with the variations in the speed condition of said cream separator, substantially for the purposes set forth.
