APPLICATION TILED OG/T. 27, 1910.

WILLIAM H. MUBSCH; F WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPEED-REGULATING GOVERNOR.
s e igcano r Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
Application filed October 27, 1910. Serial No. 589,299.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WIILIAM H. Munson, citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in thecounty of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulating Governors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to speed governors, and has especial reference to devlces adapted to automatically control the throttle valve of an engine by means of centrifugal force.
The chief objects of the improvements which constitute the subject matter of this application for atent are :to provide a simple and effective apparatus for regulating the s eed of an engine or other machine; to furnisli a speed governing device that w 1ll be sensitive to comparatively slight variations in the rate of movement of the connected mechanism, and to produce a devlce that will have few parts, and that will not be likely to get out of order.
I accomplish the desired results by employing the a paratus illustrated in the accompanying rawing, which forms a part of this application, the details of construction being disclosed in the following Views Figure l is a vertical section medlan section of the complete apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view, with the cover of the rotary receptacle removed.
Referring .to the details of the drawmg, the numeral 5 indicates a suitable hollow pan or receptacle in the form of a drum arranged horizontally .and provided with a central hub or sleeve 6 through which passes a vertical operating shaft 7, to which the receptacle or drum is keyed. The upper side of the said drum is closed by a removable circular plate 8, which forms a cover for the receptacle, and is secured to the sides 9 of the drum by suitable bolts or screws 10, which engage holes 11 in the rim. This cover is provided with a circular central aperture 12 through which the said hub 6 and shaft 7 project. Arranged within the drum is a resistance or friction wheel comrising a rim 13, and a hub 14, connected y arms 15. The hub'14 surrounds the hub or sleeve 6 of the drum and has a turning fit therewith. The lower end of the hub 14 rests upon the bottom of the drum, as indicated at 16, and has a bearing at this point. The diameter of this friction or resistance wheel is a little less than that of the surroundin drum, and its rim is narrower than the heig t of the surrounding wall 9, and is supported so that it does not touch the bottom or top of the receptacle, the only bearing being at the hub as above described.
The central opening 12 of the cover is of sufiicient diameter to allow the upper end of the hub 14-. to project beyond the cover and to th s rojectmg end are attached two diametrica ly arranged arms 17, 18, secured to the said hub by bolts or screws 19. The lever 17 is yieldingly connected by a coiled spring 20, to a convenient fixed support (not shown), so that the friction wheel 13 is held from rotating with the receptacle or drum when the latter is revolved, having simply an oscillating movement caused by variations in the frictional resistance applied to the said wheel, and limited by the force of the coiled spring 20.- Variations in the resistance offered to the wheel 13 are brought about by theaction of a suitable liquid 21, with which the pan is partially filled. When the said drum or pan 5 is revolved by turning the shaft 7 by suitable gearing (not shown) the centrifugal force will throw the liquid toward vthe periphery and this accumulation of the fluid about the rim of the wheel will cause an increased pull upon the spring 20, which will correspondingly yield moving the lever 18 which has pivoted to the extremity a link 22 which extends to the throttle valve or other speed controller, the said valve not being shown since it forms no part of this invention.
Water, oil or other liquid may be employed for the friction producing median, but I prefer to use under certain circumstances non-freezing substance such as glycerin, which will not materially thicken at low temperature. A certain amount of resistance will be offered to the liquid by the arms of the wheel 13, and to further increase the resistance I pierce the rim with one or more of holes 23, which may be made as numerous as is found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
In a centrifugal governor, the combination of a vertical shaft, a hollow cylinder mounted upon said shaft, said cylinder having one end closed and the opposite end open, a plate forming a cover for the 0 en end, said cover being removably secure to the peripheral wall of the cylinder, and having a concentric aperture therethrough, a
hub formed inte ral with the cylinder and extending throug the aperture in the cover, said hub having a central bore to receive the said vertical shaft, a resistance wheel arranged horizontally within said cylinder, a hub for the wheel adapted to turn upon the hub of the cylinder and having its upper end projecting through the aperture in the cover, the rim of sald wheel having apertures extending radially therethrough, a
pair of arms attached to the hub of the resistance wheel externally of the cylinder and projecting radially, a spiral spring having one end secured to one of said arms, and a link pivoted to the opposite arm and adapt- 15 ed to be attached to the device to be regulated. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
