Be it known that I, EDWARD Kinny Bo'r- 'rLn, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara andState of New Yorkihave invented certain new and useful mprovements in Manifolding-Pads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to manifolding books or pads and the like.

One of the objects thereof is to provide a practical device of the above nature adapted to form three clear and durable copies of an inscription.

Another object is to provide a device of this type susceptible of rapid and eflicient use.

Another object is to provide means in connection with a book whereby the leaves are automatically drawn into a desired disposition upon the book being opened.

As tending to a more ready and thorough understanding of certain features of'this invention, it ma here be noted that in the'use of devices of t is nature three clear and durable copies of an entry are often re uired.

rapid manipulation to which devices of this nature are exposed in the course of practical use. Among the dominant aims of this invention is the-provision of a device by means of which three durable copies are obtained and the above and other defects eliminated.

Referring now tothe'accom anying drawmg, there is shown a cover 1 1E therein, as by the clip 2, a pad 3 provided witha back 4. This back projects beyond the lower end of pad 3 and has secured there-' to a flexible connecting strip 5 which terminates' at the stub end 6 of a pad 7 and is secured thereto as by staples 8. The latter pad comprises a lurality of leaves each of which is folded or oubled upon itself to form poravmg secured tions 9 and 10 and each of which is weakened as at the points 11 and'12 to adapt the leaves to be detached from the stub and the'portions thereof to be separated one from another. Bound upon the upper surface of stub 6 is a transfer sheet 13 which is folded uponitself in a manner similar to the arrangement of the leaves of this pad so as to form the u per and lower portions 14 and 15. Pivoted to'the upper ortion of cover 1 is a bail'16 adapted to fol in flattened relation thereto upon the book being closed.

Beneath this hail the unused portion of the pad 3 is normally held in slidable relation as indicatedin the drawing, and upon the book being opened this portion of the pad is' drawn therewith, as best shown in Fig. 1.

The method of use of the above-described embodiment of my invention is substantially as follows: Assuming an entry to have been made and the corresponding leaves detached, the book will upon being opened be in the condition shown in Fig.2 of the drawing,

the pad 7 being slight raised in order to show the construction more clearly. In this condition, the used portion of the pad 3 lies upon the back 4, as shown in the figures, whereas the unused'portion is lifted with the cover portion 1. The uppermost leaf of pad 7 is then drawn out an folded about the transfer sheet 13, as shown in-Fig. 3 of the drawing, and the lowermost unused leaf of ad 3 is drawn, from beneath the bail 16 and slipped between the portions 14 "and 15 of the transfer sheet 13, as indicated in Fig. 1. It may here be noted that the expression transfer sheet, or its equivalent, is used broadly throughout, unless otherwise specifically indicated, to denote any duplicating or m'anifoldin medium irrespect ve of its position or con ormation.

Althou h many advantages inhere in the construction and use ofthis device as above set forth, nevertheless, this invention in so far as certain aspects thereof are concerned contemplates other methods 'of manipula tion. For example, the pads 3 and 7 with associated parts may be used without an auxiliary cover or the leaves-of the former may be weakened so as to permit the detachment of all of the co ies, if desired.

It will thus e seen that I have provided a simple, durable and inexpensive book in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and that the parts thereof are so formed and related as to ermit of rapid manipulation and to adapt it to withstand well the somewhat severe treatment inherent tion could be made without departin be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.
