To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER EDWARD MATHEsoN, resident of the town of Godsrich, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The invention relates to improvements in extension tables, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.

The invention consists essentially in the novel arrangement and construction of parts, whereby the table is extended by turning over leaves from the under side on to the top of the frame, said leaves being permanently connected to the main portion of the table top.

The objects of the invention are to devise a table structure that can be readily extended from a comparatively small size to a much greater size without introducing any loose leaves, and generally to provide an article of furniture of the class described, convenient to operate and of simple and durable construction.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view'on the center line of the table. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line. AB in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bottom of the table showing onehalf of the said table. Fig. 4 is a detail in cross section of one side of the table on the dotted line 0-D in Fig. 8.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

Referring to the drawings, 1 are the permanent side rails of the table rigidly secured to the permanent end rails 2.

3 are the cross boards rigidly secured to the side rails 1.

4 are the legs fixedly secured to the cross boards 3. The side rails 1, end rails 2, cross boards 3 and the legs 4 form the two end frames of the table structure.

5 are end slide bars rigidly secured to the end rails 2 and projecting inwardly therefrom and having the longitudinally arranged dovetailed slots 6 in their outer ed e faces complete throughout their length.

I are the central slide bars having the dove-tailed inner edges 8 sliding in the dove-tailed slots 6 in the slide bars 5.

9 is the main portion of the table top supported on the central slide bars 7 and fixedly secured thereto.

10 are extension leaves joined by the hinges 11 to the main table top 9, said extension leaves 10 being of corresponding depth when over the end of the table and covering the end rails 2.

12 are extension leaves of larger dimensions than the extension leaves 10 joined by the hinges 13 on theunder side to the extension leaves 10.

14: are extension leaves joined to said leaves 12 by the hinges 15 on the under side.

The extension leaves 10, 12 and 14 in the extended position of the table rest on the end frames and the end slide bars 5 and in the shortened position of the table fold up under and at the ends of said frames, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.

16 are side rails joined by the hinges 17 to the main table top and having beveled outer end edge faces 18.

19 are side rails joined by the hinges 17 to the main table top and also having beveled outer end edge faces. The side rails 16 and side rails 19 on each side of the table respectively being in longitudinal alinement with one another and with the side rails l.

20 are clips secured to the side rails 1 by the pins or screws 21 and turning on said pins or screws 21.

In the operation of this table, the main table top 9 is, as explained, always rigid with the central bars 7, consequently if one of the ends of the table is pulled out into its extended position, the said main table top will remain stationary, two of the slide bars 5 pulling away longitudinally from the central slide bars 7 In the extended position of one end of the table, the end frames remain in relatively the same position, though farther apart, that is to say, they are both cqui-distant from the end of the top, which with the extended end comprises the main table top and the three extension leaves of that particular extended end. In order to extend the table to its full size, the other end frame is pulled out from the central slide bar and the three extension leaves on that end brought over on top of the frame, so that the main table top is in the 16 and 19, if both ends are to be shortened,

fold up to the underside of the main table top, so that the side rails of one end frame may meet the side rails of the other end frame, the extension leaves 10 drop down over the end rails 2 and the extension leaves 12 and 14: are brought up and folded under the end rails 2 and between the side rails 1.

22 are recesses .in the side rails 2 to accommodate the leaves 12 and 14: in their folded position, the said leaves and the table top being of slightly less width than the out side dimensions of the side rails 2 so that when folded away the said leaves 12 and 14 will be completely hidden from view. The said leaves 12 and let are held in their folded position by the clips 20, thus the extension leaves 10 become, as far as appearance is concerned, the end rails of the table.

If found desirable, the hinged side rails 16 and 19 may be dispensed with there being in that case no side rails at all to the main table top 9,

\Vhere the table is very large and needs a central leg, it is obvious that said central leg may be placed under the main table top.

In the drawings, a simple hinge joint is shown between the extension leaves but it is obvious that any form of oint may be employed such as a rule joint or the joint of a sewing machine table, so long as it presents a flush surface to the table top in the extended position of the leaves.

It is obvious that the construction herein described and shown in the drawings may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention, the salient feature of which is the extension leaves permanently connected to the table top in such a manner that they can be easily folded away beneath the table or extended and there supported to provide a larger sized table.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In an extension table, the combination.

with'a supporting frame in two parts slidably joined and having permanent side rails and end rails, and a main table top resting on said frame, of a plurality of extension leaves hinged together in table end sets and adapted to be magazined one above the other parallel with and beneath said table top, a board at each end of'said main table top and hinged thereto, of the same depth as the said end rails, and in one position adapted to cover said end rails, and in the other position adapted to form a continuation of the table top to the extension leaves, said boards being hinged to said extension leaves and supporting said extension leaves at one side in their magazined position, and means for retaining the aforesaid extension leaves under said table top.

2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a supporting frame in two parts slidably joined and having permanent side rails and end rails, said side rails having longitudinal recesses in their inner walls extending upwardly from the bottom thereof at each end of the frame, a main table top resting on said frame and terminating at each side intermediate of the width of the top edge face of said side rails, a plurality of extension leaves terminating at each side flush with said table top hinged together in table end sets and adapted to be magazined one above the other, parallel with and beneath said table top and within said recesses, a board at each end of said main table top and hinged thereto, of the same depth as the said end rails and in one position adapted to cover said end rails and in the other position adapted to form a continuation of the table top to the extension leaves, said boards being hinged to said extension leaves and supporting said extension leaves at one side in their magazined position, and pivoted clips suitably secured to the frame and retaining said leaves in said recesses.
