GEORGE. L. WITSIL. OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 97,019, dated November 16. 1869.
IMROVED DEVICE FOR GRATING- GREEN .CORN FROM THE COB, dce.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/ra vice, showing the apertures through the metal plates,
and their position with reference to each other.
Figure 2 is a transverse section on line a: x of fig. 1. Figure 3 is a similar view, showing the metal plate as secured to two bars, for the purpose of leaving the bottom open.
Figure 4 is a bottom view of the trame or bed to which the-plate is to be attached when its bottom portion isto be left open, as in tig. 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal vert-ical section on line y y of iig. 1.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several igures.
This invention relates to that class of dcviceswhich is used for removing green corn vfrom its cob, for ta.
ble-use, or for any other purpose, but which may be used for various other purposes, such as grating various substances, sharpening pencils, 85e.; and
It consists in the construction of such devices, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
A, in the drawings, representswhat may be a block or piece of wood, metal, ivory, rubber, or any other suitable substance, with a semicrcular or other-shaped groove, formed longitudinally upon one of its surfaces, as shown in iig. 2; or it may be two bars of any of the above-named or any other suitable material, which will serve as a bed for the metal plate, hereafter to be described, to rest upon.
The object of the groove or space in the centre of the bedis to provide a space for the material which its central portion is to be bent' downward, so that for n. portion -of the distance the sides of the depressed portion shall form an acute angle with reference toV each other, while lower portions of the ldepression, or that portion ofthe plate which extends below such angle, may be brought together, and thus be made to assume a vertical position.
It will be apparent, however, that if preferred, this plate may be made of two distinct pieces of metal,
- heilt as above described, so as to form the proper angles, and also the vertical port-ions, and be riveted or screwed together at the bottom, or through the vertical portions of such plates.
Those portions of this plate, or of these plates, which present their surfaces at an angle to ,each other, are to be provided with slots,ar'ranged as shown in fig. 1, so that as any instrument or thing is drawn through or between them, two cutting-edges shall be presented, and thus it be adapted to the uses above stated.
In cutting or punching these slots, the instrument for that purpose should be placed upon the under or outer side of the plate, in order that theprojections raised by such cutting or punching may be upon the inner or upper surface thereof, for the purpose of forming the cutting or grating-surfaces upon such plate or plates.
When this instrument is Jro be used as a grater, or for removing corn from its cob, its plate or plates B B may be made of steel, or of heavy tin plates, or of any other metal suliciently hard'to resist the wearingactiou of any substance to'be acted upon. Under such circumstances, the cutting or punching of the, slots will formupon the projections a surface suicient] y sharp for such purposes; but when it is to be used as a pencil-Sharpener, or for any other purpose requiring a cutting-edge, such edge may be formed upon plates of steel, which alone would be `used in such cases, because of its better adaptation for the purpose, by grinding with a stone fitted to the space between the angular sides of the plates, or by filing the same with a connnon file.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described grat'er or cutter, consisting of the bed A and plate or plates B, with the "apertures n therein cut at an acute angle, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to
