SUPPORTING-POST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERTRAND E. RUDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to supporting posts adapted for use as hitching posts or for supporting mail boxes, for instance in rural districts, and my object is to provide a strong device which will be of neat appearance and inexpensive.

In the accompanying drawing, which shows my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of my post. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ring bolt or hitching loop.

Referring to these figures, my invention includes the provision of an upright post formed of an angle bar 10, centrally split at its upper end to provide extensions 1.1 which are bent at right angles thereto and inwardly upon one another to form a closed upper end for the post. These extensions, as shown in Fig. 2, are provided with central registering threaded openings 12 and are rigidly connected by rivets 13 upon opposite sides of said openings 12. The lower end of bar 10 is longitudinally split for a short distance into three strips 1 1 which are bent angularly and outwardly and are twisted intermediate their length to strengthen the same. At their free ends strips 1 1 have flat angular extensions 15 for engagement between spaced ribs 16 upstanding from a circular base plate 17 through which said extensions are bolted by bolts 18. The bar 10 is also provided with longitudinal slots 19 in its angular portions extending downwardly from a point adjacent its upper end. Thus Specification of Letters Patent.

mail boxes of certain types may be bolted through the top formed by extensions 11, while those of other types have their bolts extending through the slots 19.

The hitching ring shown in Fig. 3 is employed when the post is utilized as a hitching post, and comprises a bolt having a threaded shank 20 for engagement in the threaded openings 12 at the top of the post, and provided with an enlarged flattened head 21 through which a ring 22 is fastened.

I claim:

1. A post of the character described comprising an angle bar centrally split at its upper end to provide extensions, said extensions being bent inwardly and overlapping one another, and provided with alined openings therethrough, and a hitching device embodying a threaded bolt engaging through said alined openings whereby to hold said device and, at the same time, secure said overlapping extensions together.

2. A post of the character described comprising an angle bar having longitudinal slots intermediate its ends and centrally split at its upper end to provide extensions, said extensions being bent inwardly and overlapping one another and being secured together to form a closed top and provided with alined threaded openings, and a hitching device comprising a bolt having a threaded shank to engage within said openings and provided with an enlarged flattened head, and a hitching ring fastened through said head.
