To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH I-Ixssnif BERGER, citizen of Germany, residing at Munich, Bavaria, Germanv, have invented fcertain new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactI description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

The present invention provides a pen and pencil box which can also be used as a bookrest and as such holds the book in a convenient position for reading. To this end the box is provided with one or more recesses into which the removable lid can be inserted said lid then serving as a rest 'for the erected book; the sides ot the box will in this case act as a foot rest ior the book and keep the` same 'from slipping down. T he lid may also be made of two parts hinged together and then partly opened when used as a book rest, thus affording a greater sur face for the support of the book.

Reference being had to the accompanying` drawing Figure l shows a side view of a box according to the present invention, Fig. i2 a section along the line .1X-I of Fig. and Fig. 3 a plan-view. Fig. I is an elevational view and Fig. 5 an end view oi a detail hereinafter referred to. In Figs. l and 2 the box is shown as used for supporting a book.

The pen and pencil box a is provided with a sliding lid Z) consisting of two parts hinged at c. As shown in Fig. 1, this lid b can be partly open-ed out and the ends inserted in suitable recesses c of the box, said lid then acting as the support or back of the book rest. The box also possesses a recess (l for the pens and pencils. Said recesses c are slantingly arranged, so that the lid when used as a book-rest will have a backward slant. Further, these recesses c are so arranged that the sides oi' the box 7 which also act as guides for the lid, will serve as a 'foot rest for the book and prevent its slipping down (see Fig. In order to prevent the leaves of the book from turning over ot' their own accord, a rail g is pivotally attached to the box, said rail being shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in position for holding the leaves of the book. W'hen not in use this rail rests in a recess lr of the box, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It is of advantage to pivot the rail not in the ends of the box itseltI but in disks s arranged in or on said ends. These disks (Fig. 4) are provided with suitable notches which serve to hold the rail in any desired position.

It desired, the box may also be provided with a counting device consisting of beads arranged on a string, or the like. IVhen not in use, this device rests in a recess g of the box. The beads or the like of the counting device are ar 'anged on strings between the supports It, these latter folding down and serving as a lid for the recess g being then held down by a suitable fastener Z. When this Jfastener l is opened the supports /i spring up of their own accord and remain in a vert-ical position, as shown in Fig. 1. This automatic rising of the counting device may be attained by means of a coiled spring or india-rubber cord m arranged between the lower ends of the supports L, below the pivot points of said supports. Further, the box may be provided with a divided rule 0, consisting of two parts hinged together and held open by a spring when in use, said rule being slidingly arranged in a recess 79 when not in use.

IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. In a device of the character described, the combination with the box proper being provided with oppositely disposed inclined recesses, of a lid for said box comprising hinged sections adapted to be opened out and have their ends inserted into said recesses thereby to form an inclined book support.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the box proper being provided with oppositely disposed inclined recesses, of a lid for said box comprising hinged sections adapted to be opened out and have their ends inserted into said recesses thereby to form an inclined book support, and a rail pivoted to the box and adapted to be swung toward and from the support.

3.
