To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, OLIVER M. BURTON, a citizen of' the United States, residingat Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mattresses, and the object of my invention is to provide a mattress with a device whereby its interior may be examined by an intending purchaser and also by means of Which the interior may be ventilated.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, the preferied form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Referring to the drawing in which like parts are designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress provided with the preferred embodiment ot' my invention; Fig. 2 is a side View of a portion of a mattress showing on a larger scale my invention, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 2.

Cut in the side of the tick are one or more openings, one being illustrated which, as shown, is rectangular but it is to be understood that it may be of' any other shape found desirable. Covering this opening is a flexible plate 7 formed of a sheet of celluloid `or other suitable material. Through the 'plate 7 is provided the 'central opening 8, preferably circular, though it may be of any other shape desired. rl,`he plate 7 is secured in position over the opening 6 by means of the row of stitching 9, the plate being stitched to the outside of the mattress, so as to cover the edges of the opening (3.

In order to keep the opening S-normally closed I provide a flexible closure or shutter l0, preferably formed of Celluloid, and preferably provided with a plurality of per- 'forations fl therein, the shutter being pivoted to the inner face of the plate 7 by a rivet. l2 passing through an extension 13 of the shutter and the plate 7 adjacent to the opening 8 in the latter.

When a mattress provided with one or more of my devices is shown to a prospective customer, a in or other sharp instrument is inserted 1n one of the openings 11 in the shutter and-the shutter turned to one side, thus disclosing the filling ofl the mattress to the customer. In addition the .user of such a mattress may, from time to time, open the shutter and examine the filling to determine, for instance, when the mattress should be-made over or refilled. In addition the perforations in the shutter give ventilation to the interior of the mattress. i

I realize that considerable variation is possible n the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described except as required by thc scope of the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A mattress provided with an opening in its tick, a plate covering the opening, the plate being provided with an opening therein, and a shutter pivoted to the inner surface et' the plate und adapted to close the opening in the plate.

2. A mattress provided with an opening in its tick, a flexible plate covering the opening, the plate being provided with an opening therein, and a flexible shutter pivoted to the inner surface and adapted to close the opening in the plate.

3. A mattress provided with an opening in the side of its tick, a fiexible Celluloid plate stitched to the outer surface of the tick and covering the opening therein, said plate being also provided with an opening, and a flexible Celluloid shutter pivoted to the inner surface of the plate and adapted to cover the opening therein, said'shutter being provided with a plurality of perforations therein.
