ATTACHMENT FOR MUSIC-STANDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 28, 1910. Serial No. 563,971.
To all 'whom "it may concern:
j Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD B. GRUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Music Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for music stands and more particularly to means whereby different instruments, such as clarinets, saxophones, iutes, etc., may be securely held while not in use and in such a manner that they can be readily detached.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character which will not mar the instrument placed therein.
A still further object is to provide a holder capable of supporting several instruments at a time.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the attachment, the standard of the music stand being shown in section therein. Fig. 2 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line C-D Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line E-F Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a block constituting the body of the attachment, this block being provided with an arcuate jaw 2 extending from one face and the concave surface of which merges into the wall of a recess 3 formed in said face of the block 1. A detachable and adjustable arcuate jaw 4 is adapted to coperate with the jaw 2 and extends from a plate 5 adapted to contact with one faceof the block 1 and to abut against a stop rib 6 formed on said face. A tubular extension 7 projects from one face of the plate 5 and into a bore 8 formed in the block 1, this sleeve being interiorly screw threaded as indicated at 9 so as to be engaged by a screw 10 which is centrally located withinl the bore 8 and is swiveled in the inner end wall of the bore, as shown at 11. A head 12 is secured to and rotates with the screw 10 and by means thereof said screw can be actuated so as to shift the extension 7 longitudinally within the bore 8 and thus move the plate 5 toward or away from the block 1.
Oppositely extending arms 18 and 14 are formed on or secured to the block 1 and each of these arms isl provided at its outer end with an arcuate jaw 15, there being ears 16 upon the arm and close to the jaw. A lever 17 is fulcrumed between the ears 16 and has an arcuate jaw 18 upon one end and which is similar to the jaw 15. A spring 19 is interposed between each lever 17 and the adjoining arm and serves to hold a jaw 18 with its ends normally contacting with the ends of the jaw 15. Each of the jaws 15 and 18 is preferably semi-circular so that, when the two jaws contact, a circle is outlined thereby. Ears 20 extend from each arm 13 and 14 and have arms 21 pivotally mounted between them, there being clamping screws 22 extending through the ears 20 and arms 21 for the purpose of binding the ears upon the arms and thus locking said arms against movement relative to the arms 13 and 14. Each arm 21 has an arcuate jaw 23 at its Outer end and ears 24 disposed adjacent the jaw, these ears having a lever 25 fulcrumed between them and carrying an arcuate jaw 26. A spring 27 is interposed between each arm 21 and lever 25 so as to hold the jaw 26 normally pressed against the jaw 23. These jaws 28 and 26 are similar to the jaws 15 and 18 and each of them has a lining 27 of felt or the like the ends of which are looped or folded upon the ends of the jaws and secured thereto by means of small screws 28 or the like. Intermediate portions of the linings may be attached to the jaws by means of an adhesive or, if preferred, small screws similar to those shown at 28 may be employed for this purpose. The jaws 2 and 4 are also provided with linings of felt or the like which may be attached to them in the same manner.
In using the device the screw 10 is rotated so as to shift extension 7 longitudinally and thus move the plate 5 and the jaw 4 away from the block 1. The standard 29 of the music stand is then inserted between the jaws 2 and 4 and by rotating the screw 10 in the opposite direction, the extension 7 can be drawn into the bore 8 and jaw 4 thus caused to clamp the standard against the jaw 2. Rib 6 of course prevents the plate 5 and jaw l from swinging out of position after the parts have been properly adjusted to the standard. Vhenever it is desired to place an instrument within the holder, the lever 17 or 25 of the selected part is pressed back against the stress of its spring so as to swing the jaw of said lever away from the opposed jaw l5 or 23. The instrument is then inserted between the two jaws and the lever released. The spring will promptly shift the lever and its jaw back to their normal positions and the instrument will therefore be tightly clamped between the two jaws.
Although four sets of instrument engaging jaws have been shown upon the attachment illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that this number may be increased or diminished as desired.
Various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing :trom the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
What is claimed is l. An attachment for music stands including adjustably connected standard engaging jaws, an arm supported thereby, an instrument engaging aw ixed relative to the arm, and a spring controlled instrument engaging jaw movably mounted on said arm.
2. An attachment for music stands including a body portion, a jaw lixed relative thereto, a jaw adjustably and detachably mounted upon the body, the two jaws cooperating to engage the standard otl a music stand, an arm supported by the body, an instrument engaging aw upon the arm, and a spring pressed instrument engaging jawY movably carried by said arm.

An attachment ot the class described including a body, a standard engaging jaw fixed relative thereto, a movable standard engaging jaw, means within the body for locking said jaw against movement, an arm supported by the body, relatively fixed and movable instrument engaging aws upon the arm, a spring for holding the movable jaw normally in a -predetermined position, and an actuating lever extending from the movable jaw.

An attachment of the class described including a body, a fixed aw extending therefrom, a plate movably mounted on one tace of the body, a jaw extending therefrom, means on the body for holding the plate against rotation, coperating means upon the plate and body for binding said plate upon the body, an arm supported by said body, relatively ixed and movable instrument engaging jaws upon the arm, a spring for holding the movable jaw normally in a predetermined position, and an actuating lever connected to the movable jaw.
5. An attachment of the class described including standard engaging jaws, an arm supported thereby, a second arm pivotally connected to the tirst mentioned arm, means for securing the pivoted arm against movement relative to the other arm, a fixed jaw carried by each arm, a spring pressed movable jaw carried by each arm, and an actuating lever extending from each of the movable jaws.

An attachment ot' the class described including standard engaging jaws, means for binding the jaws upon a supporting standard, an arm seated relative to one ot the aws, a second arm pivotally supported by the iirst mentioned arm, means for locking the pivoted arm against movementrelative to the other arm, relatively xed and movable aws carried by each arm, a spring for holding each movable jaw in a predetermined position, means for shifting the movable jaw, and a lining upon each jaw, the ends or' the lining being folded upon the ends ot the jaw.
