To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, PAUL M. GRANDPER- RIN, a citizen of France, residing at Sag Harbor, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Multiplying Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a multiplying attachment for cameras by means of which the sensitized plate or equivalent element can be exposed a number of times so as to obtain pictures of desired sizes on a single plate or similar sensitized element. F

My improved multiplying attachment consists of a main frame 1 which is preferably -.its adjusted position.

The said main frame is closed at one side by a member 2 and at the other side the frame is closed by a slide-carrying member 3 which is hinged to one side of the main frame as illustrated. Mounted on an actuating-shaft 4 and fitted to slide transversely of the frame thereon is a plate-carrier supporting member. The said plate-carrier-support is formed of upper and lower and horlzontally disposed members 6 which are connected by vertical members 5 which form the sidesof said plate-carrier-support and members 6 form the ends thereof and adjacent to said side members are rails 7 whose ends are secured are formed to provide a circular bore 5 through which bore the actuatingshaft. 4 is inserted andthus mount the said plate-carrier-support in operative position. The main frame is constructed so that the portions 1 of the main frame bear against the members 6 of the plate-carrier support. This construction is such that plate-carriersupport is effectively held against vibratory movement forward or backward. A platecarrier 8 is formed to provide eye portions 9 which are fitted on the rails 7 to. accommodate vertical adjustment of the said platecarrier for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The plate-carrier is provided at one end with plate-supporting spurs 10 and at one side the said carrier is formed to provide similar spurs or stops 11. The plate carrier is also formed to provide a vertical slot 12 which receives the screw threaded portion 14 of a movable plate clamp 15. The said screw threaded portion of the plate clam which is a apted to bear against one side of the plate-carrier so as to hold the clamp n The plate-carrier 1s also provided with an arcuate slot 19 1n which is fitted the clamping head 16 which forms a part of the adjustable member 16.
The said adjustable member is formed to,
provide at one end thereof a bore through is provided with a set screw 13V to the members 6. The said side members 5 which passes the screw threaded end 18 upon the plate-carrier. The said adjustable member being thus movably mounted on the plate-carrier is held in its adjusted position by a clamping set screw 17 as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. The construction of the plate-carrier is such that the clamp 15 can be moved toward or away from the lower edge portion of the carrier 8 to accommodate plates of various lengths. The construction of the said carrier is also such that the adjustable member 16 can be swung toward or away from the spurred side of the carrier 8 to accommodate plates of various widths. The member 2 of the main frame 1 is formed to provide a slot 24 which is normally closed by a slide 24'. The slot is pro,- vided so that access may be obtained to the interior of the main frame to permit the operator to accurately manipulate the clamps upon the plate-carrier as will'be understood.
The plate carrier is provided on'its front side with a vertical rack 20 which is preferably formed to provide spaced side portions 20. The actuating-shaft 4 is journaled in any suitable portion of the main frame, and as illustrated, the said shaft is formed to provide a flat face 4" which bears against the face "47 of the corresponding bore of the sliding pinion 47 which pinion is slidably" mounted on said shaft. This construction is such that the said pinion can not rotate on said shaft independently thereof sa1d shaft being of noncircular form in cross sectlon as shown. This peculiar construction does not in any way interfere with the rotation f the shaft in the members 5 of the hereinabove described plate-carrier-support. Furthermore this construction is such that the sliding pinion is confined between the spaced sides 20 of the rack bar 20 so that in sliding movement on the shaft of the platecarrier the pinion will be correspondingly moved so that the pinion is held in constant mesh with the said rack bar regardless-[pf e shaft 4 extends outwgdly of one side of the main frame and it is provided with a controlling knob 28. A ratchet .wheel 29 is secured to the shaft 4 and it is engaged normally by a spring pawl 33. This pawl 1s secured at one of its ends to a member 32 which is mounted on one side of the main frame 1 and through its engagement with the wheel 29 the plate carrier will be held against any undesired sliding movement on its support. The member 32 has a slot 35 formed therein and between'the walls of the slot extends the end portion of a dog-carrying shank 31. The shank 31 has a dog 34 secured thereto and upon rotation of the said shank the dog 34 may be moved between the walls of the slot 35 and into or out of engagement with the locking dog 33.
The plate-carrier supporting frame is pro-- vided with spaced horizontally disposed rack bars 48 and 25 and geared to the former is a. pinion 49 upon a shaft 50, as shown. This shaft extends through the portion 2 of the main frame and it is provided with a manipulating knob 52. The manipulating knob 52 can be actuated at the will of the operator to impart the desired rotary movement to the shaft 50 and to cause the plate-carrier supporting frame to be adjusted horizontally to suit the taste of the operator.
In order to indicate at all times the position of the sensitive, plate with respect to the opening 46 of the slide-carrier and to accurately measure the portions of said plate to be exposed, I provide simple and improved orienting means which consist of a suitable gear 27 which is secured on shaft 4 and which gear meshes with a corresponding larger gear 26 upon a shaft 26. This shaft is journaled in the portion 2 of the main frame and as illustrated, it is provided at its outer end with a graduated indicating member 56 which cotiperates with a pointer 55 on the portion 2 of the main frame. This construction is such that the rotary movement imparted to the shaft 4 will as it may readily be understood cause the indicating member 56 to rotate and hence the vertical movement of the plate carrier on its support can easily be verified. The second indicating means consists of the rack bar 25 which meshes with a suitable pinion 22 on a shaft 23 which is journaled in the portion 2 of the main frame, and as shown, this shaft has mounted thereon an indicating member 53 which coiiperates with a pointer 54 upon the portion 2 of the main frame. This arrangement is such that the horizontal movement of the plate-carrier support will as is'obvious cause the indicator53 to rotate and hence the horizontal movement of the plate-carrier is plainly indicated. The. construction of the frame thus'far described is such that the shaft 4 may be operated to obtain the desired vertical adjustment of the p'latecarrier. The construction, furthermore, is such that the shaft 50 may be op- "erated to obtain the desired vertical adjustment of the plate carrier. The purpose of these adjustments will be hereinafter fully explained.
The slide-carrying member 3 is formed at its center to provide a substantially rectan- -gular opening 3 behind which verticalslides 36 and horizontal slides 37 are movable. The slides are arranged in intersecting planes with each other and as illustrated. The slides 36 extend directly across the slides 37 and are disposed at right angles thereto, and as shown, these slides are located immediately behind the slide 45 of the. exposure opening 3*. A suitable screw 38 is journaled -in bearings 39 upon the member 3 and at one-end the said screw is provided with a bevel pinion 42 which meshes with a relatively larger pinion 4.3 on a suitable screw 38. The screw 38 is journaled in bearings 40 on the member 3 and it is formed to provide reversely threaded portions which extend through correspondingly threaded passages at the upper extremities of the slides 36. The screw 38 is provided with reversely threaded portions which extend through correspondingly threaded passages in the slides 37. The screw 38 is provided with a squared portion 41 which is adapted to re: ceive a' suitable actuating key so that the screw can be revolved as is obvious. Motion imparted to the screw 38 will be transmitted to the screw 38 and when both screws are moved simultaneously the slides 36 and 37 can be adjusted to govern the size of the exposure opening 46 which is formed by said slides. The member 3 is provided with members 45 and the slides 36 are provided with longitudinal members 44: which extend between. the said members 45. The members 4-4 are so arranged with respect to the members or slides 36 that they greatly reinforce them as will be understood. The slides 37 are provided with reinforcing members 37 which are similar to the members 44. The said members 45 serve to hold the slides closed against each other and to prevent any possible sagging thereof.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 12 the slide-carrying member 3 is provided with a screw 57 and a screw 58 each being provided with an identically formed pinion 59.
These pinions mesh with each other and are so constructed that the screws may be rotated with an equal degree of rapidity whereby a square opening may be formed by the slides in lieu of the rectangular opening described in the preferred form of my invention. In lieu of the pinions shown in the preferred form of my invention, gears of the same size may be employed and by providing screws, each having a thread of a difierent pitch to obtain the desired results, that is the forming of a rectangular opening can be produced.
The construction of the multiplying attachment herein described and shown is such that one can obtain a plurality of exposures on the single plate and upon adjusting the slides vertically in the main frame and then laterally in such frame a plate can be exposed at any desired portion thereof; It will of course be understood that'in operation I first mount the unexposed plate on the plate-carrier and then adjust the clamp 15 so as to clamp the said plate at its upper edge andthen adjust the clamping head 16 so as to bear against the side edge of the plate and as it will be understood the plate is held forexposure in a simple and safe manner. I then adjust the plate-carrier in the main frame so that the portion of the plate that is to be exposed is disposed in'nnediately behind the exposure opening 46 in the member 3, after which the slides are operated to expose such size portion of the plate that is desired by the operator and I then remove the slide 45 upon the member 3 to uncover the exposure opening. The construction of the slides is such that one can obtain an accurate exposure of a portion of the plate obviating the entrance of any light whatsoever to 'the unexposed portion of such a plate. The construction of the plate-carrier which is adjustable on the described support is such that the said carrier can be quickly adjusted and moved to a position to permit removal of the used plate without removing the platecarrier from said support.
It will of course be understood that itis not essential that I construct the plate-carrier so that it may be slidably engaged with the main frame, as the shaft 4 alone effectively serves the purpose of supporting the plate-carrier support whereby it can be accurately moved thereon to assume the desired position. It may be further stated that I do not rely particularly upon the rack 20 having the guide flanges for the pinion 4.7, as other means could be employed for holding the rack and the said pinion cooperatively associated and in constant mesh at all times, as, for instance, the sliding pinion could be formed to provide guide flanges see 47* Fig. 13) in lieu of providing the rack 20 with the said guide flanges 20 as described and shown in the preferred form of my invention. This construction of the pinion 47 is such that in operative position the rack on the plate-carrier is con fined between the said flanges 47 and as it will be readily understood without any further explanation the results are practically the same as those obtained with the former arrangement in the preferred embodiment of my invention. Furthermore, practically the same results could be obtained by constructing the rack bar lS so as to provide walls between which the sliding pinion is confined when in operative position, this arrangementbeing lllustrated in Fig. 15
whereas the rack 48* is formed to provide walls 48 and having confined therebetween the sliding pinion 47 on the shaft 4.
The slides on the plate carrier are adapted to be operated for the regulating of the size of picture that is to be exposed, thus controlling the amount of light that is to cover that particular portion of the plate to be exposed. The construction is such that the exposures can be made successively in any desired direction on any portion of the plate without having to move the slides or slide carrier providing the size of pictures is not to be changed. The device is extremely simple and the lateral and vertical adjustments of the plate-carrier permit all portions of the plate to be moved to the center of the attachment and directly in line with the exposure. opening.
Having thus described my invention and 5 it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention hereinbe ore described may be made within the scope of the claims Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is 1. In a multiplying attachment for cameras, a main frame, a slide-carrier at the front end of said frame, said slide carrier having an exposure opening therein, a shaft journaled in the frame, a support mounted and movable from one side of the frame to the opposite side of said frame on the shaft, and a plate carrier mounted on said support and movable thereupon from one end of the support to the opposite end of said support, substantially as specified.
2. A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a main frame, a shaft journaled .25 in the frame, a support movably mounted on the shaft, a plate-carrier movably mounted on said support, a slide-carrier at the front of the frame, said slide-carrier having an exposure opening, a plurality of 3 slides upon the slide-carrier, and means to move the said slides so as to vary the dimensions of the exposure opening, substantially as specified.

A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a main frame,-a shaft journaled 111 said frame, a. support mounted and movable on said shaft, a plate-carrier mounted and movable on said support, a slide-carrier at the front end of said frame, a plurality 40 of slides upon the slide-carrier, and a of screws operatively connected with the said slides, substantially as specified.
4. A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a frame, a shaft journaled in'the frame, a movable support upon the shaft, a plate-carrier movable upon the support, a
slide-carrier at the front of the frame, a plurality of slides uponthe slide-carrier, a pair of screws connected with the said slides,- companion pinions meshing'with each other upon said screws,and means for rotating the said pinions, substantially as specified.
5. .A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a main frame a slide-carrier at 5.5 the front of the frame, a plurality of slides upon the slidercarrier, the slides of said carrier being operable to vary the size of the exposure opening, a shaft journaled in the frame, a support mounted and slidable on 5 the shaft, means for imparting the sliding movement of the support upon the shaft, a
plate-carrier movably mountedv on the sup-= port, an indicator operable to indicate the positions of the plate-carrier and of the plate, and a second indicator for indicating airthe positions of the support also of the platecarrler and of the plate, the said indicators being composed of the elements, or substantial equivalent elements arranged and operable in the manner described, substantially 7 as specified.
6. A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a main frame, a slide-carrier at the front of said frame, said slide-carrier having an exposure opening therein, a plurality of slides upon the slide-carrier, the
slides of the carrier being operable to vary the size of theexposure opening, a shaft journaled in the frame, a support slidably mounted on the shaft, an upper rack upon the support, a pinion journaled upon the back end of the frame and meshin with said rack, means for rotating the said pinion, a plate-carrier movably mounted on the support, and means to move the plate-carrier vertically on the support, substantially as specified. A multiplying attachment for cameras comprising a frame, a slide carrier at the front of the frame, said slide carrier having an exposure opening therein, the slides of the'carrier being operable to adjust the size of the exposure opening, a horizontally movable support mounted in the frame, a platecarrier mounted for vertical adjustment on the support, a vertical rackbar supported by the plate-carrier "and provided with.
carrier being operable to vary the size of the opening, aplate-carrier disposed directly behind the slide-carrier and adapted for vertical adjustment and for'horizontal adjust-' ment in the frame, and movable clamps on 'the plate-carrier operable to retain plates of different sizes to said carrier.
9. In a multiplying attachment for cameras, a frame having a slide-carrying member, a horizontal shaft, a support slidably mounted on said shaft, and a vertically adjustable plate-carrier on said support,'substantially as specified.
10. In a multiplying-attachment for cameras, a frame having a slide carrying member, a horizontal shaft, a support slidably mounted on said shaft, a vertlcally adjustable plate-carrier on said support, and means operable to hold the plate carrier in its adjusted positions.

In a multiplying attachment for cameras, a frame'having a slide-carrying member, said member having an exposure opening therein, a horizontal shaft, a support mounted to slide on said shaft, a plate carrier adjustable vertically on said support, a pinion slidable on said shaft, a rack on said plate-carrier, and means for holding said pinion in constant mesh substantially as described.
