To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts,y have invented a newand useful Improvement in Eyeglass- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in eye glass holders, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel type of means for controlling and arresting the winding movement of the chain barrel when desired.
A further object of the invention is to improve, simplify and cheapen the construction of devices of this type, in a manner hereinafter more fully pointed out and manifested.
In the drawingsv-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device of this character constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the cover plate removed, Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a section of the base plate taken on the line 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. G is a detached perspective View of one of the parts.
The invention as at present contemplated includes a housing which consists of a base plate 1 to which is secured by any suitable means a cover plate 2. A fixed central hub 6 is provided which has its head 8 formed with a cam-shaped stop 9, the hub or post 6 being rigidly affixed to the base plate 1 by means of a screw 7 shown in Fig. 4:. On the post 6 there is mounted a chain barrel 3 which latter is rotated to wind up the chain 11, by means of the spring 15, the latter bey ing connected to the post and barrel whereby to revolve t-he latter. A pin 14 is affixed to the base plate 1 being secured to the latter by means of an elongated struck-up portion 13, the port-ion 13 being of U-shape in cross-section and being formed by striking or bending out a portion of the base plate 1. The chain 11 carries at one end thereof the snap fastener 12 to which latter the eye glass is affixed. A pair of diametrically opposite tubes or hollow guide members 4 are secured to or formed integral with, or in any other manner carried by one of the side faces of the barrel 3. One end of the chain 11 is connected to the barrel and the opposite end thereof is passed through the housing as at 16. The chain barrel 3, is formed mainly of a pair of abutting members each of disk form, the peripheries of which are formed with L-shaped iianges, the two flanges coacting to form a U-shaped chain retaining part, it being understood that any form of chain barrel may be used, as this forms no part of my invention.
In operation it will be understood that the cam-shaped stop 9 in use normally occupies the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing wherein same points upwardly, the barrel 3 having an anti-clockwise movement, whereby as the pins or detents 5 reach a position where gravity acts on the same to move them outwardly from the guide members 4;, they will first ride on the curved face of the cam-shaped stop 9 and on leaving the latter will drop to the position shown in Figs. 3 and L1, engaging the side face of the stop and arresting the rotary movement of the barrel. It will be understood that the spring is wound so as to exert pressure on the barrel to move the latter in a clockwise direction, and consequently one of the pins or detents 5 will be caused by the spring to engage cam stop 9. In drawing the chain out it will be understood that the same moves the barrel in an anti-clockwise direction, in which movement the pins or detents ride on the curved face of the cam stop 9. The pins or detents return to their position in engagement with the shoulder 15, when the chain barrel operates with sufficient speed to throw them centrifugally from the center. It will be understood that to cause the barrel to wind the chain up, when the latter is in its outermost position, merely fequires that the barrel be given a slight but sharp anti-clockwise pull which will cause the detent in engagement with the cam stop to be thrown outwardly, and the barrel thus being free to revolve is given a rapid rotary motion effecting an instant winding up of the chain.

claim as neuY and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In an eye glass holder, a stationarily supported hub having a cam-shaped stop, a spring pressed chain barrel rotatably mounted on the hub, a pair of diametrically opposed hollow guiding members carried by the chain barrel, means slidingly arranged in said guiding members so as to have a true radial movement With respect to the chain barrel adapted to have their inner ends engage With the cam-stop, and means to restrict the outward movement of the said means.

In combination with a base plate, a hub thereon, a cam stop carried by the hub, a spring pressed chain barrel rotatably mounted on the hub, said barrel being formed With an annular shoulder, open-ended tubes carried by the chain barrel in diametrically opposite relation, said annular shoulder closing the outer end of each of said tubes and a pin conformably andA slidably mounted in each of the tubes, said pins being adapted to have their inner ends project beyond the inner ends of the tubes to engage with said cam stop.
3. In an eye glass holder, a stationarily supported hub provided with a cam-shaped stop, a rotatable chain barrel surrounding the hub, a plurality of guiding means carried by the front side face of said barrel, said guiding means having their inner end portions located adjacent to said cam-shaped stop, a movable sliding element in each of said guiding means, and means to engage said sliding elements to restrict the outward movements thereof.
