SPOOL CASE FOR SEWING MACHINES.

nvewto'o I mum'- UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
JASPER VANNETTE,
0F TIFFIN, OHIO.
SPOOL-CASE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, JASPER VANNETTE, citizen of the United States, and resident of Titfin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Cases for SewingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spool-cases for sewing machines and has special reference to an improvement in the spool-case disclosed in Letters Patent No. 875,751, granted to me Jan. 7, 1908, which is adapted for containing the under-thread supply in a lockstitch sewing machine, preferably in the form of an ordinary commercial spool of sewing thread.
The spool-case of my aforesaid patent, which is of cylindrical form and supported in the machine in horizontal position, is made sufficiently large to receive loosely therein the ordinary sizes of commercial spools which rest peripherally directly upon the bottom or lower wall of the case and turn therein upon the drawing of the thread from the spool during the sewing operation. It has been found in practice, however, that when the machine is operated at a high rate of speed and the thread is rapidly drawn from the spool, the latter is caused to have a rocking movement within the case which operates to cause an undue loosening of the coils of thread, particularly when unreeling near the ends of the spool, and a slipping of them off the ends of the spool, which is liable to result in an entanglement of the thread in the case and a consequent interference with the sewing operation.
Because of this, it has been the object of my present invention to provide an improved spool-case of the type disclosed in my aforesaid Patent No. 87 5,7 51, in which the objectionable features noted will be avoided.
To this end, my invention consists in providing the spool-case with a plurality of bearing surfaces arranged for engaging the periphery of the spool at opposite sides of its vertical center, whereby the spool will be held against rocking movement within the case and the consequent objectionable undue loosening of the coils of thread be avoided.
Referring nowto the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a spool case embodying my invention with a spool con- Specification of Letters Patent.

tained therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the spool-case embodying a modified form of the invention.
The spool-case, indicated at 7, is of substantially cylindrical form and, as shown in the drawings, is provided at its exterior side with two longitudinally arranged grooves 10, 10, for effecting sliding connection with its supporting frame in the manner indicated in my aforesaid patent, the said frame not being shown herein for the reason that it does not constitute a part of my present invention.
As a means for producing a desired tension on the thread drawn from a spool contained within the case, the latter is provided at its exterior side with two cooperating tension plates 55, 55, between which the thread is adapted to be located when the spool is inserted into the case by means of a threadslot 56 leading therebetween and opening at the front end of the case.
The spool bearing surfaces constituting my present invention may be provided by different means. A preferable means is that shown in Fig. 1 where the spool-case is provided at its lower side with oppositely inclined parallel bearing surfaces 2, 2, extending longitudinally of the case, which engage the periphery of the spool, indicated at s, at opposite sides of its vertical center as shown. This means of supporting the spool at opposite sides of .its vertical center, instead of at its lower vertical center as in my aforesaid patent, not only serves to avoid rocking of the spool within the case and the objectionable features attending it, hereinbefore referred to, but also, in causing a more uniform unreeling of the thread from the spool, assures a more even and accurate tension on the thread by the tension device.
Referring to Fig. 3, Ihave shown another embodiment of my invention in the form of two parallel ribs 3, 3, located on the lower inner wall of the spool-case in position for engaging the periphery of the spool at opposite sides of its vertical center as shown.
hat I claim is 1. An under-thread case or shuttle for sewing machines having a relatively large chamber adapted to receive loosely a commercial spool and in which said spool normally occupies an off-centered or eccentric position, said case having separated bearing surfaces below its horizontal center upon which said spool rests at its periphery on which the periphery of said spool rests on I opposite sides of its vertical center only, opposite sides of its Vertical center only,
substantially as described. substantially as described.
2. An under-thread case or shuttle for Signed at New York, in the county of 5 sewing machines having a relatively large New York, and State of New York, this 15 chamber adapted to receive loosely a CO111-' 15th day of July, A. D. 1910.
