Description

APPLICATION HLED NOV. 24, 1913- Patented May 11, 1915.

THOMAS A. BOYD, or GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
rim: OR 00? wINmNo MAcia rNE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed November 24, 1913'; Serial No'. so2,s14.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, THOMAS ALEXANDER BOYD, a subject of King George the Fifth,-
and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pirn or Cop Winding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to pirn and cop winding machines and has for its object improved means of guiding the yarn onto the cone of the pirn or cop.
My invention is applicable to machines in which the pirns or cops are built in a cup or shaper.
In pirn or cop winding machines of the kind referred to, there is a constant danger of the yarn being cut by the pressure of the cone of the pirn into the cup. This arises from the tendency of the thread to dwell and gather at the bottom and also at the top of the taper when the thread is guided between the two surfaces, viz., the wood pirn or bobbin and the inner face of the metal cup. To prevent this I cause the traverse to lay on less thread at the top and bottom, thus preventing the excessive pressure at these points and avoiding the damage to the yarn.
My invention consists in so operating the thread traverse guide as to alternately change the point to which the thread is traversed as it moves toward the apex and also toward the base of the cone of the pirn or cop or toward the said apex alone or toward the said base of the cone alone.
Accompanying this specification is one sheet of drawings showing a side sectional view of my invention.
In carrying out my invention in one arrangement in the figure shown in the drawings in which the pirn is wound in a cup or shaper I employ a fixed cup 1, a pirn 2 in said cup, a spindle 3, to drive the said pirn, the said spindle being driven by ordinary means and arranged to re- 'cede from. the cup endwise as the pirn is formed. Below the cup 1, I place a rocking traverse shaft 2* and on it I mount a thread guide t which passes to the top side of the cup 1 and guides the thread 5 which comes from below onto the pirn. On the rocking shaft 2" is a horizontal lever 6 projecting inward and having at its inner end 6 a stud and friction roll 7. Below the fric-' tion roll 7 and operating same is a double winged heart cam 8. One wing 8 of the said cam is about shorter than the other wing 8 and the bosom 8 is deeper than the bosom 8 The cam 8 is revolved by ordinary mechanism. When the lever 6 and the thread guide a are operated by the bosom 8 and the long wing 8 of the heart cam the said thread guide is moved from the base of the cone of the pirn 2 to the apex 2 When the horizontal lever 6 and thread guide 4 are operated by the bosom 8* and the short wing 8 of the heart cam 8 the thread 4 is guided from short of the base of the pirn to e short of the apex. Thus, only every second layer of yarn is traversed to the apex and base of the pirn. By this means the yarn is more firmly wound upon the stem of the pirn and is less liable to get cut by the pressure of the pirn in the cup.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is v1. In pirn and cop winding machines, a cup or shaper within which the cone of the cop is built, a traverse guide for leading the thread to the cone of the cop within said cup or shaper, and means for reciprocating said guide, said means serving to move the guide to different points at the apex of the cup on successive reciprocations, for the purpose described.
2. In pirn and cop winding machines, a cup or shaper within which the cone of the cop is built, a traverse guide for leading the thread to the cone of the cop within said cup or shaper, and means for reciprocating said guide, said means serving to move the guide to different points at the base ofthe cup on successive reciprocations, for the purpose described.
3. In pirn and cop winding machines, a cup or shaper within which the cone of the cop is built, a traverse guide for leading the thread to the cone of the cop within said cup or shaper, and means for reciprocating said guide, said means serving to move the guide to different points at the apex and base of the cup respectively on successive reciprocations, for the purpose described.
4. In pirn and cop winding machines, a cup or shaper within which the cone of the cop is built, a traverse ide for leading In testimony whereof I have signed my the thread tothe ep e oft e 'cop within sai name to this specification, in the presence 10 cup or shaper, and means for reciprocating of two subscribing Witnesses.
