VAMP-MARKING MACHINE.

To all who/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE F. DAVEN- PORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Vam Marking Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for marking shoe vamps with various marks of assistance to the operator in assembling the parts of the shoe and comprises improvements in machines of the above class by which they are adapted to mark that form of vamp commonly known as bluchers or other fancy or unusual forms of vamps. These Vamps are, as a rule, not adapted to be accurately positioned by the guides heretofore employed in vamp marking machines and one feature of my invention relates to the provision of means for accurately determining the correct position of a vamp of the above nature and holding it in such position while it is being acted upon by the various marking agencies. Preferably the marking means and vamp positioning means are so constructed and arranged that one may be moved relatively to the other to adapt the machine to mark either right or left vamps, and the vamp positioning means are adjustable to accommodate different length Vamps.
Another feature of the invention relates to the provision of means for indicating on a vamp the proper overlap for the quarters or foXing to be attached thereto. This is especially desirable in the case of such shoes as bluchers in which the quarter is attached to that side of the vamp which will be on the outside when the shoe is assembled. The proper overlap for the quarters may be indicated on a vamp either alone or in combination with one or more other marks such as the toe tip overlap, or the boX toe overlap and either at the same time or different times therefrom. Preferably, however, the overlap for the quarters will be indicated on the vamp simultaneously with the other marks it is desired to indicate thereon.
In the machine herein described, the means for marking on the vamp the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto is shown as movable in unison with the vamp supporting and positioning means in its adjustment for right and left vamps, and a third feature of the invention relates to the provision of means for supporting and maintaining a vamp in correct position to b e marked, which means are adjustable relative to certain stationary marking agencies to adapt the machine to mark differently on right and left Vamps, in combination with other agencies which are movable in unison with said supporting and maintaining means relative to said stationary marking agencies for marking on the vamp certain points of constant position irrespective of such right and left adjustment.
.Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a plan view, partly broken away, of a vamp marking machine having my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detail thereof.
The specific form of vamp marking machine to which I have shown my invention as applied is that shown in the co-pending application of C. H. i 312,218, filed April 17, a base A which may be given a skeleton form, a marking bed B preferably formed of some relatively soft material such as wood or rubber to avoid injury to the marking agencies, a vamp supporting table C, and a marker carriage D.
The vamp supporting table C is secured to the base A preferably by means of a pivot bolt 2 and is mounted to swing laterally of said base between limits which may be adjusted by screw el, as shown in said application. Table C is provided with two slots 6 and 8 in which move the pairs of pins 10 and 12 respectively, adjustable toward and from each other by milled headed screws 14 and 1G respectively. These pins engage the vamp positioning and marking members 20, hereinafter to be more particularly described, and are adjustable to adapt said members 20 to fit any size or style of vamp through milled headed screws 14 and 16 and locking device 18, as shown in said pending application.
The means for marking a vamp supported on the table are substantially the same as shown and described in said co-pending application and comprise a marker 22 for indicating a line extending longitudinally through the middle of the instep portion of the vamp, a marking point 24 for marking 1906 and comprises Bayley, Serial No.'
the vamp at a. point substantially above the axis of pivot boltl 2 to indicate the center of the vamp throat, a tip marker 2G and a box toe marker 2S for indicating the line of overlap of the toe tip and box toe respectively. Markers 26 and 28 are adjustably held on the outer ends of bent arms 30 which are pivoted to the striking lever B2 and have interengaging toothed sectors 3a. rIhe striking lever 32 is provided with a segmental bar 38 for supporting the striking ends of bent arms 30 and may have a knob 3G by which it may be depressed, being returned to elevated position by a coiled spring 10. Markers 22 and 24; are supported on a bracket 42 which is depressed by striking lever 32. Markers 26 and 28 are mounted on carriage D which may be moved lengthwise of the machine on rails 4% by eccentric cam 4G to provide a ready adj ust` ment for different styles of toe tips or box toes independent of the different sizes or styles of vamps, while to provide for successive adjustments of the tip or box toc markers to suit different sizes and styles of vamps the machine has a shifting lever 48 pivotally connected to its base A and carrying adjustable slide 49 to adjust the point of connection therewith of ar link 50 which is also connected to the rear cross bar of the carriage D.
Vamp positioning and marking means 2O comprises a pair of flat plates each having openings to receive one of each of the pairs of pins 10 and 12. As the distance between said pins varies with their adjustment to suitdifferent styles of vamps, one of the pins passes through a slot formed in said plate a while the other ts rather closely in its socket. Plate a has pivotally attached thereto at its rear end a marker arm b carrying marker pin CZ preferably through an intermediate carrier member 0, to provide for adjust-ment. Member c is shown as forked to receive the end of arm 7) but has two clamping screws e and f passing respectively through enlarged and elongated slots formed in said arm. These provide for adjustment of the marker points both lengthwise of the machine and also transverse thereof, while any convenient means may be provided for adjusting said points vertically to adapt them to make a deep or shallow indentation, for instance a screw and jam nut g fitting on the upper end of the pin CZ. To provide for properly positioning the vamp on the bed, a pin 7L may be screwed into an opening formed in plate a and other openings a' may be provided to receive said pin corresponding to different lengths of Vamps. A spring may be provided for holding the marker arm b elevated.
In operation the vamp indicated in broken lines on Fig. l is supported on table C and marking bed B, the correct position being determined by means of pins z which lit in the recesses flanking each side of the throat. By turning the milled headed screws 14 and 1G either together or separately the position of pins 71, may be changed to fit the throat of any size or style of vamp. To accommodate vamps of widely different length, pins 71, may be adjusted from one hole z' to another and by turning table C on its pivot 2 t-he machine may be adjusted to accommodate right and left vamps. The vamp being supported in proper position on its bed and the marking devices properly adjusted thereabove the operator depresses striking lever 32 through its actuating means. This operates to indicate on the vamp the various marks as described in the application of Bayley above referred to, should it be desired to have all these points indicated on the vamp.
In practice the agencies for indicating the middle line of the instep and the center of the throat would be removed from the machine or rendered inoperative in the manner disclosed in the said application of Bayley when it was desired to mark blucher vamps. The depression of striking lever 32 also serves to indicate on the vamp the proper overlap for the quarters which is especially desirable in the case of blucher Vamps. This last operation is accomplished through the medium of segmental bar 38, which, as striking lever 32 is depressed, strikes the carrier for marking pin cl, causing said pin Z to indicate the desired pointon the vamp.
It should be noted that the relationship of each marking pin Z to its corresponding vamp positioning pin z. remains constant irrespective of the angular movement of the vamp supporting table and pins 71, to accommodate right and left Vamps and that consequently said pins Z indicate points on the vamp which are stationary and independent of such adjustment.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of angularly adjustable means for supporting a vamp in position to be marked, and means for indicating on a vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto.
2. In al vamp marking machine, the combination with angularly adjustable means for supporting a vamp in position to be marked, of means for indicating thereon the proper overlap of the toe tip, and means for indicating thereon the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto.
3. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a vamp in position to be marked, and means for indicating on a Vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto, said supporting and indicating means being adjustable relative to each other to accommodate right and left Vamps.
4. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for support-ing a Vamp in position to be marked, and means for indicating on a Vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto, said support-ing and indicating means being adjustable relative to each other between predetermined limits to accommodate right and left Vamps.
5. In a Vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a Vamp in position to be marked, means for indicating on a Vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto, said supporting and indicating means being adjustable relative to each other between predetermined limits to accommodate right and left- Vamps, and means for adjusting said limits.
6. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a vamp, detachable means for insuring the correct position of a vamp so supported, and means for indicating on a vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto.
7. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a vamp, pins adapted to each engage one of the recesses flanking the throat of said vamp for insuring the correct position of said vamp, and means for indicating on a Vamp so positioned the proper overlap for the quarters to be attached thereto.
S. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a vamp, pins cach engaging one of the recesses flanking the throat of said vamp to insure the correct position thereof, said supporting means being provided with means for permitting adjustment of said pins to accommodate Vamps of different length, and means for marking on a Vamp so supported the proper overlap for quarters to be attached thereto.
9. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means for supporting a vamp, pins each engaging one of the recesses flanking the throat of said vamp to insure the correct position thereof, means for marking on a Vamp so supported, means for moving said supporting and positioning means and marking means relative to each other to adjust the machine to mark on right and left Vamps, and means for indicating on a Vamp so supported a plurality of points of constant position independent of such right and left adjustment.
10. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of means forsupporting a Vamp, pins carried thereby and each engaging one of the recesses flanking the throat of said Vamp to insure the correct position thereof, means for marking on a vamp so supported, means for adjusting said supporting and positioning means to adapt the machine to mark on right and left Vamps, and means for indicating on a vamp so supported a point of constant position relative to one of said positioning pins and independent of such right and left adjustment.
11. In a Vamp marking machine, the combination of vamp supporting and positioning means adjustable to accommodate right and left Vamps, means for providing a Vamp supported thereby with marks, the positions of which Vary with such right and left adjustment, and means for providing a vamp so supported with marks whose position does not vary with such adjustment.
12. In a Vamp marking machine, the combination of vamp supporting and positioning means adapted to be adjusted for right and left Vamps, and marking means adjustable in conformity with the adjustment of said first mentioned means.
13. In a vamp marking machine, the combination of vamp supporting and positioning means adapted to be adjusted for right and left Vamps, and marking means adjustable in unison with said rst mentioned means.
14. In a machine of the class described, the combination of means for supporting the Vamp, means for indicating the line of attachment to the toe tip, said supporting means being adjustable to accommodate right and left Vamps, and means for making a plurality of marks whose position on said Vamp is independent of said adjustment.
15. A vamp marking machine having, in combination, marking devices for indicating the line of attachment of the tip, a vamp supporting table, a plurality of positioning plates on said table, and marking devices for indicating the overlap of the quarters carried by said plates.
16. A Vamp marking machine having, in combination, means for indicating the line of attachment of the tip, a supporting table, means for indicating the overlap of the quarters and means whereby said last named means may be adjusted to vary the extent of the overlap.
