Specification o f Letters-Patent.
Application filed July 14, 1911.
`invented a new and useful LastfTesting Tool, of which the following is a specifica-l tion.
Our invention consists of a last testing tool, by means of which the measures o f lasts of all kinds can be tested, so that it is poss sible to select the correct last for shoes` and boots of any kind and, if necessary, to core rect the last by subsequent working. Then it is po-ssible to produce exactly lijke shoes and boots.
vWe will now proceed to describe our in-. vention lwith reference to the accompanying drawing, in'whioh- Figure l is an elevatio-n of the last testing tool, Ya lastbeing indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, and Figs. t and 5 are details, which will be referred to later.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A suitable base plate a is provided with a pillar I), ony which an arm c can be moved up and down by means of a knob 01, a spring of any known construction (not shown) being inserted between the nave of the arm c and the pillar Z2 for producing a soft friction, so that the arm c can be thereby adjusted in any position. In a similar manner a slide f can be vertically adjusted on the pillar l) by means o-f a knobr f1. The pillar b is provided with a vertical measure 1, which is shown .to be in millimeters. The nave of the arm c is on the front cut out to form a frame, as is shown, so that it can serve as an indicator on the measure b1 for adjusting the arm c.
Also the front side of the slide f is cut out,
so that it serves as an indicator.
In the vertical longitudinal central plane of the pillar b the base plate a is provided with a slot a (Figs. 2 and 5), in which a spring-pressed rabbet 0 can be moved and adjusted. This rabbet has on it a vertical measure, whichis shown to be in millimeters. An exchangeable heel pattern e can be secured in the slide f in any known manner and is made in one with a horizontal, plate c1 for supporting the bottom of the 'heel of any last, which latter is indicated by the dotted lines. The base plate a is provided with a measure. p1 (shown to be in,L millimeters) and the rabbet o pushed against the toe of the last serves as` an indicator for measuring the length of the last.
On either` side of the pillar b is a slotted support which can be shifted in av slot fw (Fig. 4) in the basev plate a and held in adjustment by means of spring-pressed plates w1, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4t. In the slot o f each support a guide r can be vertically adjusted and held' in adjustment by means of a screw r1 and a nut r2. Horizontal rules g and g1 are longitudinally movable in the guides 1' 1: and can be secured in any posit-ion by means of bent leaf springs s and s1 fastened on the guides and bearing against the rules. The two, rules4 q g1 are on their upper surfaces provided with scales o @l and carry `in their free ends opposite pointers t t1 of any known constructiomjwhich are pressedV outward by helical springs u u l surrounding them and can be pushed inward against the last for producinginarksvon the same.y
A slide Of' t Construction similar tof is movable onl the arm c and is provided with a vertical fine wirev g or the like serving as an indicator. The slide dis made to serve as a guide for a vertical needle lzy and is on its upper surface provided with a suitable spring c' for holding the needle h in any position.I As can be seen from Fig. 3, the
lower end of the needle Il, is doubly bent, so as to` bring itsy point into the vertical central plane. VThe arm c is provided with several scales le. Z m, which stand in certain proportions to the measure p1 on the base plate and are made to known rules in use for the principal measures of the last, such as width over the ball (scale lc), width over the instep (scale Z) and width over the heel (scale m) .j The scales v v1 on the rules g g1 correspond to the scale 7c. y
The last testing tool is operated as follows In correspondence with the length of any last to be tested a suitable heel pattern e, is secured in the slidey f and then the las isplaced with its middle portion on the base plate a andwith its heel on the plate el of t-he pattern e, after which the slide f is vertically so adjusted, that the heel of the last exactly iits the curved'recess of the pattern e and its bottom is in close Contact throughout with the plate el. Then the rabbet 0 is pushed against the toe of the last,
itsV
the scale p and the height of its toe above i the base plate a can be measured on the rabbet o. As the last has marked on it certain measures, it is possible to adjust the slide d on the arm c in accordance with the scale lc, so that it occupies the position shown, after which the needle h is moved downward until its point strikes the last and produces thereon a mark. Next the two rules g g1 are adjusted in such a manner, that one rule, say g for the inner side of a right hand last is adjusted with the aid of it-s scale o, while the other rule g1 for the outer side of the last is not positioned quite so far forward as g but is positioned to the rear thereof by three numbers of the scale. Then the two pointers t t1 are pushed against the last, so as to produce marks on the same. For a left hand last the rule g1 requires to be adjusted in accordance with the scale o1 and the rule g is put three numbers short of the rule g1. When the last is measured over the threemarks so produced, the standard width of ball must result, in order to prove the last to be correct. After shifting the needle L upward, the slide Z is shifted to the right, so as to bring its indicator g into the plane of the line y-g/ shown in Fig. l in accordance with the scale Z for the width of instep, whereupon the needle is again moved downward forproducing a mark on the last. Afterward the needle 7L is again moved upward and the slide Z iS shifted to the right for bringing its indicator g into the line z-z in accordance with the scalek m Afor the width of heel and the needle L is moved downward for producing a further mark. Then the last is tested by measuring over the marks produced in the usual manner. lVith the aid of the Vnew tool it is easy for any one to test any last most carefully and to correct it if necessary.
The last testing tool can be varied without departing from the spirit of our invention. Other measures may be employed instead of millimeters.
