Toallwho'm'itmayconcem:
Be it knownthat I, EDMOND Rnmuom), a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in, the county `of Monroe and 5 State of New York, 'have invented a new and useful Nail-Extractor, ofv which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for extracting nails from and driving nails into boards, etc., and is designed as a substitute L for the more expensive ones now in com- `mon use. My invention enables one to draw out a nail noiselessly and without breaking the WoodI around the head as much as by the old means. It also serves to drive out a nail or spikel when the point thereof protrudes from a plank, etc.; it can be em-.
ployed to extract nails that have been clenched.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side` elevation; ig. 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially online H Fi 1; Fig; 3 is a front elevation of the ad]ustab1e claw;
and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line b-b of Fig. 2. y
My invention .consistsof a tubeA A, 'a plunger B fitted loosely in the tube, and' a movable claw E adjustable on the "tube.
The edge of the tube on one end is sharpened and provided with a cleft D like that in ordinary tack pullers. In use the sharp i edge of the 'tube is to be vemployed as a gouge to cut away the wood at the head of thenail or to pry up the point of a. clenched tnail, 'which can then be drawn by settin the cleft in the tube underthe nail ead'an prying on it with the tube as a lever. When the nail has been started it can bepulled out 40 b means of the claw Iat the end of the tube to ether by dputting a fulcrum block, as a bloc of woo and tu .under the tub'e-lever, or by means vof 'the movable claw on the tube,v using the latter as a lever to lift the nail.
To employ the device for driving back a protruding nail, the tube is placed over the goint of the nail and the plun er driven own on the nail. Theend of t e plunger is provided with a cavity C into which the 'pomt of the nail'will fit and thereby prevented from being blunted vwhile being driven out. The tube, its bore bein' but a little greaterlv than the diameter of t e nail, will prevent the nail bendin' under the blows employed vto drive it bac The plunger is to be expanded on the end within the tube a little more than its mean diameter. Wheli itis inserted in the tube, the latter is to be closed enough on it upper end to catch the expansion on the end of the plun er and prevent it from pulling out of the tul e, but not to prevent its easy movement in the tube. w I
The device can be employed to drive nails into hard wood, for the tube"wi1l prevent 05 the nails from bending under blows that .wou1d`distort them -if not supported by the wall of the tube.
Havin fully described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters y Patentis:
In a nail extractor the combination of a tube and plunger, one end of the tube having a sharp2 edge whereby to pry up aU clenched. nai ;the plunger containmg a cav- 7 5 ityin its vend to receive the point 'of a nail in the rocess of drivin it out; the plunger provided wit means to prevent them separating.
