Cambridge. in the county of Middlcsex and The invention has for its object to con struct improved forms of back and front plates. which are hinged together at their upper edges, and adapted to hold a blade very securely between them. and also in correct position for use: also to construct an improved form of detachable handspiece and clamping-screw thereon. by which the back and front plates are held in fixed position with the blade between them.

By means of the hinges the plates (1- and b are held fixed in all positions relative to each other, except permitting them to move toward and from each other.
The front-plate 0 comprises two substantially fiat portions (1. 0 extending from end to end thereof and arranged to form an obtuse angle. The lower edge of the portion (1' is formed with teeth (1. which are made quite long to provide long interdental spaces a; the length of the teeth. however, is not.

The width of the fiat portion 7; is substantially the same as the width of the flat portion a of the plate a. and the obtuse angles of both plates are approximately the same. so that when the plates are caused to appma-ch each other they may engage each other throughout their length or over all. The upper edge of the at portion 1) has the ears 0 for the hinge connections. and also the lips b, and it also has a transverse recess (1', corresponding in shape, size and position to the recess (1 in plate a, so as to register therewith when the two plates are closed together.
The plate a may have spurs e. a, at the ends to enter recesses formed in the ends of the razor-blade f. to thereby correctly position the blade with respect to the lattes.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the ends of the plate h are cut away, as at c, e, permitting the plate Z to be closed u on the plate 0, although said recesses c, c perfonn no other function. i
The razor-blade is placed between the spurs c, e, on the fiat portion a of the plate (I, and then the plate Z) is closed down upon it. thereby engaging it and holding it in position.
In lieu of providing the blade-engagin" portion a of the plate (1. with spurs e sai portion, near the apex of the. angle in the plate, may have a narrow slot, or elongated recess 0" see Figs. 9,10 and 11 extended from nearly end to end of the plate, adapted to receive the rear edge of a blade 6" formed with beveled ends, 0, said beveled ends engagin the end walls of the slot, as shown to thereby correctly position the blade; and said slot is so arranged that when the blade is projected into it the cutting-cc e thereof will be lifted slightly above the {lat portion of the plate; or, in other words. the blade is held obliquely to the plane of the plate, and, when the plate I; is closed down upon the plate 0, said blade will be engaged and bent transversely to a slight extent to bring its cutting-edge into correct position at the toothed edge of the plate.
For the purpose of securely holding the plates in closed'position and also to provide means for manipulating the implement, a hand-picce is provided. having' a clampingscrcw at the end. Said hand-piece is here shown' as composed of two short cylindrical bars 9, g, screwed or otherwise connected together, to thereby produce a hand-piece of suitable length, and the end of the bar g has a screw-threaded socket g, which re-' ceives the clampin -screw g. The head 9 of the clamping-screw is circularly formed and has on its under side a boss g", made with parallel sides and a rounded end. Said boss g is of a shape to substantially fit the recesses d, d, in the plates, and is made of a thickness corres ionding approximately to the thicknesses of both plates, and,when-contained in said recesses, will hold the clampingscrew front turning with the circularlytormcd head g arranged at the back side of the back plate and the hand-piece at the front side of the front plate. B) then turning the hand piece to revolve it on the clamping-screw g, said hand-piece and clamping-screw will be drawn toward each other to thereby clamp the plat/es between them.- I
When the. hand-piece is secured to the dates it. will be seen that the blade will be add at the correct angle for use, owing to forming the plates angularly as shown. The portion g of the hand-piece may be )crmanently magnetized so that it may 0 employed as a means of taking the razor blades from a box and for placing them in the box, as represented in Fig- 8.
' I claim:
1. In a safety razor, a pair of plates hinged together at their upper edges, the lower edge of one of said plates extending beyond the cul't'ttsl'mntling edge of the other plate and having a row of teeth, recesses extending inwardly from the upper edges of said plates, intermediate their leugtlnwhich register with each other when the plates are in closed position, a hand-piece, and clamping-means tor the plates connected with said handpiece which enter both of said recesses, substantially as described.
2. In a safety razor, a pair of obtuseangled plates, hinged together at their upper edges by apair of hinges, each plate coinirising a flat attachingxirtion and a flat hide-engaging poition, the edge of the blade-engaging portion of one of said plates extending beyond the corresponding edge of the other plate and formed with a row of teeth, and the attaching portions of both plates being recessed, a handpiece having a flat engaging-face to engage the attachingportion of the under plate, between the hinges, and 'a clamping screw connected with said hand-pieces adapted to enter the recesses in the attaching-portions of the plates, and having a head with a flat engaging face to engage the attachingportion of the upper plate, between the hinges, said head extending forward approximately to the bend of the plate, substantially as described.
3. In a safety-razor, a pair of obtuse-angled plates hinged together at their u per edges, the lower edge of one of said (p ates extending beyond the corresponding e ge of the other plate and formed with a row of teeth, reces es formed in said plates at their upper edges, which register with each other when the plates are in closed position, a hand-piece, a clamping-screw on said handpiece, having a boss which enters said re- CC5 CS and having a head which engages the back side of the back-plate while die handpiecc engages the front side of the front plate, to thereby securely hold the two plates in closed position with a blade between them and to attach said plates to the hand-piece, substantially as described.
4. In a safety-razor, a pair of obtuse-anled plates hinged together at their upper edges, each plate having two substantially tlat portions, the lower edge of one plate extending beyond the corresponding edge of the other plate and formed with arrow of teeth, the upper fiat portions of both plates having transverse recesses inid-wav their length, extending from their upper ges inwardly approximately their full width, :1 hand-piece, a clmnping-screw on the handpiece, havin a boss shaped to correspond to the shape the recesses which enters said recesses, and havin a head which engages the back side of theTmck-plate while the end of the hand-piece engages the front side of the front-plate. to thereby securely hold'the two plates in closed position with the blade between thcm,.and to attach the plates to the hand-piece and prevent the same from turning with respect thereto. substantially the plates wlnch enters said recesses and having a head above the boss which engages the back side of the back-plate while the end of the hand-piece engages the front. side of the front-plate, to there y securely hold the assembled parts in fixed relative positions, with a blade securely held between the obtuse-angled plates, substantially as described.
(3. In a safety-razor, a pair of obtuse-angled plates hinged together at their upper edges. each plate having two substantially scams flat portions, the lower edge of one plate extending beyond the corresponding edge of the other, and formed with a row of teeth, the front plate having a narrow elongated slot arranged obliquely to the plane of the ilate, which receives the rear ed e of the lade to hold said blade oblique iy to the plane of the plate in order that it may be bent into correct position by the back-plate closing uponit, substantially as described.
7. In a safety-razor, a pair of obtuse-angled plates hinged together at their upper edges. each plate having two substantially flat portions, the lower edge of one pl ate extending beyond the corresponding edge of the other, and formed with a row of teeth the front plate having a narrow elongated slotarranged obliquely to the plane of the )late. which receives the rear edge of the lade, to hold said blade obliquely to the plane of the plate in order that it may be ient into correct position by theback-plate closin upon it, and a blade having beveled ends which engages the ends of said slot, to thereby correctly dispose it relative to the plate bearing it, substantially as described.
