Description

8. HAMBOURGER.
BURGLAR ALARM. APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 30, 1908.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
c. IS PETERS cu. y/Asmnorau, D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL HAMBOURGER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HAMBOURGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burglar alarms especially adapted to use in connection with jewelry boxes or similar receptacles positioned upon a suitable frame, such as a dressing table, a bureau or like articles of furniture, and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby an alarm will be sounded upon the depression of the box when the same is fraudulently opened.
WVith the above objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a front elevation, partly in section, and provided with the improved jewelry box positioned thereon.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated the improved device in connection with an ordinary bureau but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to this exact application, as the device may be applied with equal efiiciency to other articles of furniture or the like.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the bureau. This bureau 1 is of the usual construction and has its top portion 2 centrally cut away, the said cut away portion being adapted for the reception of a jewelry box 3. The top 4: of the jewelry box is hinged thereto and the same is adapted to be opened through the medium of a suitable key in connection with a lock 5 upon the said box. The box 3 preferably comprises a rectangular member and the same is movably secured upon a partition 6, directly below the top member 2 through the medium of suitable substantially U shaped conducting members 7. The members 7 are insulated from the box 3 as well as the par- Specification of Letters Patent.

tition 6, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. The U-shaped members 7 have a tendency to force the box 3 upwardly through the opening provided in the box 2 and to limit this upward movement I have provided the said box with oppositely disposed stop lugs 8 which contact with the under face of the top 2. Secured upon the partition 6 directly below the longer arm of each of the U- shaped members 7 are L shaped contact members 9, the same being insulated upon the partition 6 as illustrated in the figure of the drawing. The members 7 and 9 are each connected through the medium of suitable wires 10 and 11 to a battery 12 communicating with the bell 13. By this arrangement it will be noted that when the box is positioned within the compartment formed between the top 2 and the partition 6, a slight contact upon the top of the box, such as the ressure of a persons hand thereon will orce the said box downwardly within the compartment, thus bringing the member 7 into contact with the member 9, and thus completing the circuit and sounding the alarm and thereby notifying the occupants of tlllie house that the box has been tampered wit Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a bureau or the like having its top provided with an opening, of a jewelry box provided with a cover loosely mounted within said opening, U shaped spring contact members support-ing the box, means consisting of offsets upon the sides of the box for limiting the upward movement of the box, contact plates below the U-shaped members, and wires connected with a battery and a bell for the contact members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL HAMBOURGER.
Witnesses:
