Specification of Letters Patent.- ,Patented A1123- 23,1910.
' Application filed new]; 11, 1910. Serial No. 548,714.
To all whom it inay coacem: '-Be it known that I Srnvnsrnn A. QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at; Kalamazoo, Michi an, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Water-; Closets, of which the following is a specifi-i cation. I V This invention relates to'improvements in water closets. i The main objects of this invention are tol provide in a water'closetan improved seat and cover structufe and supporting means therefor. 1 Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitel appear fro the detailed description to follbw. I,
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The structure described constitutes one effective embodiment of my invention. Other embodiments would be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an efiective and preferred embodiment of the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a detail plan ofa structure embodying the features of my invention,
portions being-broken. away to show struc-' tural details. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical section takenon a line corresponding to the broken line 22 of Fig.1.. Fig 3 is an enlarged detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to the line 33 of Fig. 1. Q
In the drawing similar reference characseveral. views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction ofrthe little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the, drawing, 1 represents the closet bowl," and-2 the water su ly pipe.v The bowl is preferably provided flange-3 on its rear edge for convenience inattaching the seat and cover thereto.
The seat is made up oftwo sections',;- 4,
which are crescent. shaped. generalz'form.
These sections are connected bythej dowel rod 5, which is arranged in suitable dowel holes 6 in the inner edges-of the seat sections,
6 pivot; rod T is provided with a nut 8 at each end, the nuts beeffective.
with a rod and pivot rod ooacting to form a rigid ing preferably countersunk into the seat sec- 'tions as illustrated, whereby the sections are clamped upon the dowel rod, the dowel connection .for the sections, holding them in a spaced relation.
The hinge members 9 are provided with downwardly projecting bolts 10, which are arranged through the flange 3 on the bowl. The hinge members are provided with outwardly projecting knuckles 1.1 through which the pivot rod 7 is passed, the knuckles being arranged to lie against the inner edges of the seat sections, thus reventing lateral movement of the seat. (see Fig. 1.) v
The cover 12 is adaptedtooverlap both of the seat sections, and is provided with hinge members 13 which are provided with suitable knuckles that engage the pivot rod,
the same being arranged to lie against the inner sides of'the knuckles 11 of the hinge members 9, thus preventing lateral movement of the cover.
The hinge members 13 are secured-to the cover by means of the countersunk nut 14.
(See Fig. 2.) This forms a simple and' effective hinge support, as well as a means for securing the seat sections together. The
structure is very simple and economical,
and at the same time very satisfactory. It is evident that the seat sections may be formed with the grain of' the wood and joined without careful fitting- I have illustrated and described my improvements in the form in which I have embodied them, which, form I find to be very I am aware that the same can be considerably varied in structural details and form without departing from my invention, and I desire to be understood as ters refer to similar parts throughout the" claiming the same-specifically 'as illustrated,
appended claims.
and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is:
1. In, a structure of the class 'as well as broadly-within the scope of the, 1
Having thus-described my invention, what 9 .I claim as new edges for said rod; a hinge connection for said cover and said seat sections to said bowl comprising hinge members secured to said bowl andpro ecting upwardly between said on said pivot rod between said seat hinge members and bearing against the same.
7 2. In a structure. of the class'described, the combination with the bowl 'a seat formed of two sections; a dowel rod connecting said seat sections, said sections be ing provided with dowel holes in their inner edges for said rod; a hinge connection for said cover and said seat sections to said bowl comprising hinge members secured to said bowlv and projectin upwardly between said seat sections and aring againstjthe inner edges thereof; a pivot-rod arranged transversely through said seat sections'.
and a clam ing nut for said pivot ro whereby sai upon said dowel rod.-
seat sections are clamped ocean 3. In a structure of the class described, a seat formed of two sections; ajdowel rod connecting said seat sections; a hinge for said seat sections, com rising a ,ivot rod arranged transversely t rough sai seat sections, and a clamping nut on said pivot rodwherebysaidseat sections are clamped upon said dowel rodvand rigidly connected in a spaced relation.
4.- In a structure of the class described, a seat formed, of two sections; a dowel rod between said seat sections; a hingefor said 3'5 seat sections, comprising a pivot rod coacting with said dowel r in rigidly connectin said sections in a spaced relation.
11 witness whereof, I have hereunto set myhand and seal in the presence of two witnesses;
