PENCIL-SHARPENER AND CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed April 9, 1910. Serial No. 554,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. CARTER, MAURICE A. CARTER, and THOMAS H. Can- TER, citizens of the United States, residing at Larimore, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners and. Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its main object a simple, durable and efficient construction of pencil sharpener which may be easily carried in ones pocket, or be secured if desired, by a clamp of preferably novel formation, to a table or desk so as to serve as a stationary appliance.
With this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
'4 is a detail perspective view of the socket member and a portion of the spindle which carries it; and, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view, the section being taken through the socket i'nember.
Correspmnling and like. parts are re r-rred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Our improved pencil sharpener comprises a body portion which in the present instance consists of a tubular handle 1 closed at. one end in any desired manner, and an 1 r 3 od nut 4 which is detachably or: e handle as grooves that are formed on the interior wall of the nut at. In order to prevent the entire disconnection of the spindle and the nut, the spindle is provided at one end with a retaining ring '7 designed to engage the nut at the outer limit of movement of the spindle relative thereto.
On one end of the spindle 6 is formed or secured a tapered cup or socket member 8, the same being formed with a longitudinal slot 9 and with a laterally extending bracket or ledge 10 at one side wall of the slot. A blade 11 is adjustably connected by screws or similar fastening devices to the ledge 10, the screws or the like working in lateral slots formed in the bar so that the cutting edge of the blade may be projected to the desired extent over the slot 9. One of the screws or fastening devices for the blade is extended, as indicated at 12, to form a stud upon which a preferably hooked latch 13 is pivotally mounted, said latch being designed to be swung over into an opening 14 formed in the nut, whereby to hold the spindle and socket member at the inner limit of their movement.
A helical spring 15 is inserted within the handle 1 and within the hollow or tubular portion of the spindle 5, the spring exerting a tension to move the spindle outwardly, in an evident manner. In order to properly hold the spring and prevent it from buckling, a rod 16 is inserted therein, the rod being secured in a concentric position within the handle 1. by any desired means.
From the foregoingdescription in connection with the accon'ipanying drawing, the operation of our improved pencil sharpener will be apparent. In the practical use of the device the pencil to be sharpened is merely inserted within the cup or socket 8 and pressure is imposed on the pencil in a longitudinal direction to thrust the spindle inwardly relative to the handle, this movement being obviously accompanied by the rotation of the spindle about its longitudinal I a direction to shave the wood and BEST AVAILABLE coPv is only necessary to first work the nut 4: on the spindle 5 and to then secure the retaining ring 7 in place and to finally screw the nut into the hollow handle 1, it being, of course, understood that the spring will have been inserted in the spindle and in the handle around the rod 16. By means of the latch 13, the spindle 6 may be held retracted in the handle at the inner limit of the movement of the spindle, and the entire device will thus occupy very little space and may be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user. When the device is desired to be used, it is only necessary to disengage the latch from the opening in the nut and the spindle will be moved out by the spring 15 with the socket member 8 in readiness to receive the end of the pencil to be sharpened. It is to be understood, however, that the device is not limited to a portable construction or use, but that it may also serve as a desk attachment or accessory, and in such connection We preferably use a.clamp such as illustrated in Fig. 1. This clamp embodies a preferably U-shaped body portion 17 preferably of spring metal adapted to be slipped over the edge of a desk or desk leaf, or the edge of a table or the like, one end of the body portion carrying a cam lever 18 preferably with an engaging portion of rubber or the like, as indicated at 19. By this means the body portion may be securely on gaged with the desired support. The other end of the body portion is extended laterally and returned upon itself to form a split or open sleeve 20, the end being curled upon itself, as indicated at 21, to receive a link 22. An eccentric or cam lever 23 is secured to the link 22 so that the handle 1 may he slipped into the sleeve with the cam lever 23 in an inoperative position and the relatively free end of the sleeve may then be drawn inwardly by swinging the cam lever 23 against the sleeve, whereby the sleeve will tightly grip the handle 1 and securely hold the pencil sharpener in place.
In order to catch the shavings, we have provided a tray 24 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the clamp 17 extending forwardly therefrom underneath the socket member of the pencil sharpener. This tra} is formed with side and end flanges 25 and designed to retain on the tray a pan 26 to catch the shavings and lead dust, said tray being provided with a handle, as shown, so that it may be easily placed in position and removed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The herein described pencil sharpener, comprising a body portion including a tubular handle, a spindle working in the body portion, and arranged for a rotary and longitudinal movement relative thereto, a socket member carried by the spindle and formed with a longitudinally extended slot and a laterally projecting ledge at one side of the slot, a blade mounted on said ledge, fastening devices securing the blade to the ledge, one of said fastening devices being extended to form a stud, and a hook latch pivotally mounted on said stud, the body portion being formed with an opening with which the latch is designed to engage, whereby to hold the spindle in retracted position.
2. The herein described pencil sharpener, comprising a tubular handle, a nut secured thereto, and a spindle working through the nut into the handle, a socket member carried by the spindle and formed with a longitndinally extended slot, and a laterally projecting ledge at one side of the slot, a blade mounted on said ledge, fastening devices securing the blade to the ledge, one of said fastening devices being extended to form a stud, and a hook latch pivotally mounted on said stud, the nut being formed with an opening with which the latch is designed to engage and a spring mounted in the handle and exerting an outward tension on the spindle.
In testimony whereof, we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
