Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM SoHRmR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Bracing J ack-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in self bracing ack posts or drilling machines, the object being to provide a jack post which is exceedingly cheap and simple in construction and one which is very rigid.

Another object of my invention is to provide very novel means for supporting the journal box so that it is impossible for the same to work loose in any way.

A further object of my invention is to provide very novel means for connecting the journal box to the sill so that the braces will be held in the proper position.

My invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved jack post. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

In carrying out my improved invention I employ a sill A provided with notches A adjacent each end, in which are secured the lower ends of braces B and C between the upper ends of which is arranged the reduced portion D of the lower half of the ournal box D. Shoulders D are formed by the reduced portion resting upon the ends of the braces B and C, the braces being cut so as to fit snugly against the shoulder and reduced portion.

The reduced portion D is provided with recesses D D, D and mounted in the recesses D D a shaft E extends transversely through the reduced portion. Eye bolts E and G carrying turnbuckles H, which are connected to bolts I, are secured in the sill A so that the journal box can be drawn tightly down on the braces by turning the turnbuckles H. The shaft E is secured in position by cotter pins E so that it can be readily detached when desired.

The journal box D is provided with threaded bores J in which are adapted to extend bolts K for securing the upper half L of the box in position and arranged within the journal box is the ordinary rabbeted sleeve M upon which the shaft N is adapted to turn.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a ack post which is constructed of very few parts so arranged that they are not liable to get out of order.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, a jack post comprising a sill having notches formed in its top adjacent each end and central spaced openings, converging braces having their lower ends arranged in said notches and spaced apart at their upper ends, a journal box provided with a central reduced portion forming shoulders arranged between and on the upper ends of said braces, said reduced portion being provided with spaced recesses having apertured walls in.transverse alinement, a bolt extending through said a ertures, eye-bolts loosely mounted on said shaft within said recesses, bolts arranged in the openings of the sill and turnbuckles connectin said bolts for locking said member toget er.
