To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLAUD DANIEL Mc- PHEE, of Arnprior, in the Province of 0ntario, Canada, and JOHN Grnuns, of Braeside, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scratch-Headed Fuses, of which the followin is a specification.
Our invention re ates to improvements in scratch headed fuses, and the objects of our invention are to provide simple and effective means for retaining the i niting material in position on the end of t e fuse and to enable the manufacture of the same to be carried out as economically as ossible.
It consists essentially 0- the imppoved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of the fuse and igniting member therefor in the hand of the operator. Fig.-
2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view. Fig. 4 is a side view of the ball of igniting material.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents the end of a fuse and 11 a cap of such diameter as to be capable of being readily slipped over the end of the fuse adapted to support the same. This cap is formed at the outer end with an inwardly turned flange 12 and on the inner end with an outwardly turned flange 13, said latter flange being adapted to facilitate the ready insertion of the end of the fuse into the cap.
14 represents the ball of igniting material of such material as to be ignited by friction. It may be of any match composition and if desired it may be so constructed that it will only ignite on specially prepared surfaces. This material is made in thcform of a ball and allowed to dry. the end of the cap between the edges of ,th flange 12, so that when the ball is dropped into the inverted cap, it will be held by the flange 12. The fuse is theuinserted until the endcontacts with the ball. The cap is retained in position by any suitable method of fastening: for instance tin-indentation 15 might be formed in the side of the cap after it has been inserted on the fuse.
A portion of the ball will project outwardly through the opening in the cap and may be frictionally ignited by suitable means: for example an igniting member A might be employed having a strip 16 of abrasive material such as sand paper thereon.
The ball 14- is arranged to contact with the end of the fuse 10 in such a way that there will be an annular air space between the ball and the end of the fuse, the function of which is to prevent choking during ignition. What We claim as our invention is: v
A scratch headed fuse having a cap inclosing the end of the fuse and supporting the sides thereof and formed on. the outer end with an, inwardly turned flange, and a substantially spherical ball of match composition of slightly greater diameter than the opening in the cap, and being held against the end of the fuse by the flange on the cap,
wheruy. a portion of the surface of said ball will project outwardly beyond the end of the cap where itmay be frictionally ignited, the contact between the end of the fuse and the ball being of such a character that an annular air space will be formed around said ball and the end of said fuse, as and for the purpose specified.
