To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA C. BUOKMINSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Presses, of which the fo1lowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings inclicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to presses in which the presser members are relatively movable into different operative relations to each other, and particularly to presses of the type employed to cut out thin sheet material such as upper leather for boots or shoes.
Presses of the type just referred to are advantageously constructed with presser members having different pressure surface areas and in a preferred construction a movable presser member having a pressure surface area considerably less than a stock supporting bed is movable over said bed to bring it into operative relation to a die placed upon different portions of the stock to be out which is supported upon the bed. The movement of the presser member into operative relation to the die may be effected in any suitable manner, but in order that the machine may have as great capacity as possible, it is desirable that the pressing operation take place immediately after the presser member comes into operative position. Provision has been made in known machines for this succession of operations. It has been found, however, in practice that if the pressing operation takes place before the movement into operative position has entirely ceased that the die will be struck a glancing blow, and a particular object of the invention is to prevent such operation of the machine and to insure that when the presser member strikes the die it shall be moving in a direction substantially normal to the surface of the bed. Furthermore when the width of the presser member is not much greater than that dimension of the die which extends transversely to the presser member when in operative position it may happen that the inertia of the presser member will cause it to move so that it will not entirely cover the die when it strikes it. This tends to render the operation of the machine unsatisfactory, since it is important of the type above referred to by providing 1 means for preventing the continuation of the relative movement of the presser members by whlch they have been brought into a selected operative relation to each other upon said members coming into said operative relation to each other. 7
More specifically the invention has for an object the provision, in a machine in which the presser members are relatively movable toward and away from each other to effect the pressing operation and also relatively movable in directions transverse to the direotion of the pressing movement into different operative relations to each other, of means operated by one of said members during the relative pressing movement for preventing relative transverse movement.
In its illustrated embodiment, the invention is shown as applied to the type of press illustrated in United States Letters Patent to Arthur Bates, No. 921,503, dated May 11, 1909, in which the presser member is carried by a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of a stock supporting bed for vertical reciprocation and foroscillation about ciprocating presser member is manually movable into different operative relations to a stock supporting bed of means for checking the movement of said member over the bed in advance of the pressing operation. It will be noted further that in the illustrated embodiment the braking pres sure is applied to the plunger which supports the presser member whereby a very compact and very efiicient construction is obtained.
In another aspect, therefore, the invention may be said to comprise the provision in a machine, of the class described, in which a presser member is carried by a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of a stock supporting bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, of means for checking the movement of said presser member over the bed arranged to operate directly upon the plunger.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

The stock supporting bed 2 is mounted upon a bracket-like extension of the frame 4 and the presser-arm or presser member 6 is rigidly attached to the plunger 8 mounted in bearings 10 and 12 for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical aXis, the verticalreciprocation of said plunger being effected by connections with an eccentric le upon the driving shaft 16 to which may be clutched by suitable clutch mechanism a loose driving pulley '18. The clutch is actuated by the rod 20 connected at its upper end to the rear arm of a lever 22 fulcrumed at 24 in the frame and having at its forward end a starting handle 26. The forward arm of the lever 22 has inter mediate its ends a swivel surrounding the plunger 8 and concentric therewith whereby the handle 26 may follow the presser member 6 in its movements over the bed.
The stock 28 to be cut is placed upon the bed 2, the die 30 for the particular blank to be cut is placed upon a portion of the stock best suited for it, and the presser member 6 is then swung by the operator into operative position over the die 30, this swinging being effected either by grasping the presser member or the starting handle 26, the latter being depressed to actuate the clutch and efi'ect the vertical reciprocation of the presser member as soon as it has come into operative position over the die.
The parts hereinabove described are not specifically new.
The inertia of the presser member 6 may be considerable if it has been swung some distance over the bed and has been moved rapidly, ative position and further to relieve the operator of the necessity for checking the movement of said member, provision is made for automatically checking this move ment before the pressure surface of said member strikes the die. The illustrated means comprises a brake cylinder 32 having a split hub 3% which may be clamped by a and to insure its stopping in operset screw 36 upon the adjusting rod38 carried by the plunger 8 and which is also connected to the upper end of said plunger. The brake cylinder 32 is thus rigidly connected to the plunger and oscillates therewith. Loosely mounted upon the adjusting rod 38 between the hand wheel 40 and a collar 42 pinned upon said rod is a yoke 44: having pivoted to its outer ends brake levers 46 carrying brake shoes 48 arranged to engage diametrically opposite portions of the brake cylinder 32. The lower ends of the brake levers 46 are guided between ears 50, 52 formed either upon the frame of themachine or, as herein illustrated, upon a casting 54: bolted upon the frame adjacent to the upper bearing of the plunger. The ears 50, 52 are spaced apart a distance approximately equal to the width of the levers 46 whereby lateral movement of these levers in the directions of oscillation of'the brake cylinder 32 is prevented, a spacing sleeve 56 surrounding a bolt 58 serving to keep the outer ends of the ears properly spaced. The levers &6 increase somewhat in thickness from their lower ends up, their inner faces lying in substantially vertical planes, and rollers 60 mounted between the ears 50, 52 are arranged to bear against the outer faces of said levers near their lower ends whereby, when they are moved downward with the plunger, they are pushed radially inward toward the brake disk 32, thus causing the brake shoes -l8 to be brought into braking engagement with. said disk.
To permit the amount of braking action to be varied, an eccentric adjustment is provided for each of the rollers 60, this adjustment being illustrated especially in Figs. 2 and 3. Each roller is mounted upon a bolt 62, having an eccentric portion 64E about which the roller turns, and an enlarged concentric portion 66 which provides a shoulder between which and the ear 50 the roller is confined. The end of the bolt remote from the enlarged portion 66 is threaded and is of reduced diameter whereby a second shoulder 68 is provided which bears against the inner face of the ear 50, the nut which confines the bolt in position bearing against the outer face of said ear. The head 70 of the boltis squared whereby it may receive a wrench to effect the adjustment of the rollers 60 toward or away from the center of oscillation of the plunger 8.
The operation ofthe machine is as follows: When the operator has moved the presser member 6 into operative position over the die, as hereinbefore described, and has depressed the starting handle 26 to start the pressing operation, the plunger 8 begins to descend to bring the presser member 6 into contact with the die and as it descends the thicker parts of the levers 46, or the parts radially more remote fronithe center of os- -thus be checked, since the levers 46 are prevented from moving in the directions of the oscillation of said plunger by the ears 50 or the ears 52. As the plunger retu-rns.to its normal position the levers will be moved radially outward about their pivots by springs 72 confined between lugs upon said levers and cooperating lugs upon the arms of the yoke 44.
In the construction herein described the brake cylinder 32 has been referred to as an. attachment to the plunger, but it will be. un-v derstood that it canbe made as. a part of the plunger and that it need not necessarily be anenlargement of the plunger, although it will be obvious that there are advantages in increasing the lever arm of the brakin It will be further understood that the invention is susceptible of various embodiments and that that herein shown is merely illustrative.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A press, having. in combination, cooperating presser members relatively movable into any selected operative relation toeach other and also relatively movable for the purpose of applying pressure and means for preventing a continuation of the first named movement upon said members coming into said operative relation to each other.
2. A machineof the class described, comprising cooperating presser members arranged for relatlve movement in amounts de termined at the will of the operator to bring them into different operative relations -to each other, means for effecting a relative pressure applying movement of said members and means for preventing a continuation of the first-mentioned relative movement of said members during the last-mentioned relative movement of said members.

A machine ofthe class described, comprising a bed, a die freelymovable over said bed, a pressure applying member having a pressure surface area less:th an that of the g bed and movable into operative position over said die wherever located. on vthe bed, means for moving said member toward and away from the bed toeifect a pressingoperation, and automatic means for checking the movement of-the member over the bed in advance of the-pressing operation.

A machine of the class described, comprising abed, a diefreely-movable over said bed, a pressure applying vmember having a pressure surface area less than that of the bed and movable into operative position over the die wherever located on the bed, means for moving said member toward-and" away from the'bed to cause it'to engagejthe die and elfect a pressing operation, and automatic means forpreventing movement of the pressure applyingmember over the bed at the time it engages the die in the pressing operation.

A machine of the class described,,h aving in combination, presser members relatively movable'toward and away from each other to effect the pressing operation and also relatively movable in directions-transverse to the direction of their pressing movement into different operative relations .to each other, means for effecting a relative pressing movement of said members and means operated by one of said members during said pressing movement for preventing relative transverse movement.

A machine of the class-described,h aving in combination,-a bed, a presser member manuallymovable over said bed into different operative relations thereto, means for moving said member toward and away from said bed to effect a pressingzoperation, and automatic means for checking themanually' effected movement ofthe member over the bed in advance of the pressing operation.

A machine of: the class described, having in combination, abed, a die movable over said bed, a presser member manually I at movable over said bed into operative relation to said die wherever located, means for effecting a pressing operation, and automatic means for checking the manually eiiected movement of the presser member over the bed in advance of the pressing operation.
11. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a die movable over said bed, a presser member manually movable into operative relation to the die wherever located over the bed, mechanism for efi'ecting a pressing operation, means for actuating said mechanism and means independent of said actuating means for preventing a continuation of the movement of the presser member over the bed during the pressing operation.

A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over said bed into diiierent operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to efiect a pressing operation, and means for checking the movement of said member over said bed controlled by the movement of said member toward and away from said bed.
13. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a die movable over said bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into operative relation to said die, means for effecting a pressing operation, and means controlled by said last named means for checking the manually ef- :tected movement of said presser member over said bed.
14. A machine of the class described, hav ing in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over said bed, means for effecting the reciprocation of said plunger, and means controlled by the reciprocating movement of said plunger for preventing its oscillation during its reciprocating movement.
15. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into different operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to effect a pressing operation, means for moving said member toward and away from said bed and means operating after the actuation of said moving means for checking the manually effected movement of said member over said bed before the end of its movement toward said bed.
16. A machine of the class described, comprising a frame, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings in said frame at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger, a brake cylinder also carried by said plunger to oscillate therewith and braking means arranged in.
said frame and operated to engage said cylinder by the downward movement of said plunger.
17 A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over said bed, a brake cylinder carried by said plunger and brake members constructed to engage simultaneously diametrically opposite portions of the periphery of said cylinder and to be operated by the reciprocating movement of said plunger.
18. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over said bed, a brake cylinder carried by said plunger, a brake member also carried by said plunger and means operating during the downward movement of said plunger to press said brake member into engagement with said cylinder constructed to prevent lateral movement of said brake member.
19. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of the bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over the bed, and means for checking the lateral movements of said presser member operating directly upon said plunger.
20. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of the bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over the bed, and automatic means for checking the lateral movement of said member operating directly upon said plunger and 0011- trolled by the vertical movement of said plunger.
21. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over said bed, and means for checking the movement of said member over said bed comprising braking means carried by said plunger and movable therewith during its vertical recipro cation but constrained from oscillatory movement with said plunger.
22. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a bed, a plunger, bearings for said plunger in which it is arranged to reciprocate along its longitudinal axis and also to turn about said axis, a presser member carried by said plunger and extending over said bed, braking means carried by said plunger to reciprocate therewith and arranged to be moved transversely to the plunger into and out of braking engagement therewith, and means whereby the movement of the plunger in one direction along its axis causes the braking means to be moved into engagement with the plunger to check its turning movement.
23. A machine of the class described, comprising a bed, a shaft or column arranged in bearings at one side of said bed to reciprocate vertically and to oscillate about its vertical axis, a radial presser arm carried by said shaft or column and arranged to oscillate therewith to bring it into operative position over different parts of said bed, means for reciprocating said shaft or column to move said resser arm toward and away from the bed to effect a pressing operation, and means for preventing the oscillation of said shaft or column as it reciprocates.
24. A machine of the class described, comprising in combination, a bed, a die freely movable over said bed, a shaft or column arranged in bearings at one side of said bed to reciprocate vertically and to oscillate about its vertical axis, a radial presser arm carried by said column and arranged to turn therewith to bring it into operative position above the die wherever located on the bed, means for reciprocating said shaft or column to cause it to carry the radial presser arm into engagement with the die to effect a pressing operation, and automatic means for checking the turning movement of said shaft or column before the radial arm engages the die;
