AUTOMATIC CONTROLLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RAY 1V. Scorr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings. State of New York, .and Jose SAnrEnn, a citizen. of the United States, of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Controlling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to improvements in automatic controlling apparatus and is particularly adapted foruse in connection with automatic player pianos.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation of the apparatus with part of the perforated sheet cut away. Fig. 2 a broken section illustrating part of the control mechanism in combination with the longitudinal cross section of a sleeve. 1 ig. 3 a transverse cross section of the control mechanism and sleeve and Fig. 4 a longitudinal cross section of the control mechan- 5 is the framework carrying the music rolls 6 and 7 upon which the perforated sheet of music 8 is fed.
' 9 is the tracker board provided with the bar 10 connected to the partition 11 of the pneumatics l2 and 13 controlled by the exhaust tube l4.
15 is a roller which may be constructed of brass and preferably provided with teats or projections 16 adapted to register with the perforations in the sheet 8. These teats or projections are sufficiently small in cross section to enter said perforations and are spaced to conform to the alinement of said perforations SQ as to insure the registration of some of the teats or projections at all times during the passage of the perforated sheet over the roller 15.
17 and 18 are sleeves more particularly illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4- These sleeves are internally threaded and are provided with the buttons 19 and 20. At each end of roller 15 is also provided the key or projection 21 and in each of the sleeves 17 and 18 is also provided a groove 22 within which the key 21 is adapted to slide.
23 is a spring provided with notches or indentations adapted to register with the threads on the interior of the sleeve and is residing in the borough 28 and 29 fastened to the framework without departing from suitably secured to the roller 15. One of these springs is provided at each end of the roller and by pressing upon the button 19 the sleeve may be introduced upon the ends of the roller as shown, so that by releasing the buttons the sleeves are held permanently in the desired position. In adjusting the apparatus these sleeves are preferably brought close to the outer edges of the perforated sheet of music so that as the sheet feeds between the music rolls any lateral movement of the sheet is immediately imparted to the roller 15 having extensions bearing against the springs 2i and 25.
26 and 27 are tubular connections connecting with the pneumatics l3 and 12 respectively. These tubular connections terminate at the upper outer sides in the blocks 5 by suitable springs as shown, one of them beingpivotally connected to the bar 10, so that normally the openings to the tubes 26 and 27 are closed by the springs 24 and 25. lVhen the sheet of perforated music shifts to one side the tube on that side is eXposed to atmospheric air owing to the fact that the spring has been forced away from the same. This condition causes the pneumatic to which said tube is connected, to immediately inflate thereby causing the bar 10 to travel in the same direction as the shifted roller carrying with it the tracker board 9 which again immediately registers.
Of course it will be readily understood that the teats or projections 16 may be sufiicient to insure the automatic control of alinement and the same may be said of the sleeve combination particularly set forth in Figs. 2, 3 and at or a combination may be used to advantage.
Various other modifications may be made the spirit of the invention.
Having described our invention, What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an automatic control apparatus, a
support, a tracker board and music rolls, a
sheet of music-adapted to pass over said support, tracker board and rolls, said support being provided with means adapted to engage said sheet and shift said support therewith and means whereby said tracker board is shifted to correspond with the shift of said support.
2. In an automatic control apparatus, a roller a tracker board and music rolls, a sheet of music adapted to pass over said roller, tracker board and rolls, said roller having flanges and being adapted to engage said sheet by said flanges engaging the outer edges of said sheet, and shift said roller therewith and means whereby said tracker board is shifted to correspond with the shift of said roller.
3. In an automatic control apparatus, a roller, a tracker board, music rolls, a pair of pneuinatics, a sheet of music adapted to pass over said roller, tracker board and rolls, said roller provided with means to engage said sheet and shift said roller therewith, means whereby said tracker board is shifted to correspond with the shift of said roller, and said means comprising mechanical connection between said tracker board and said pair of pneuinatics and pneumatic connection between the ends of said roller and said pneumatics.
4. In an automatic control apparatus, a roller, a trackerboard member and music roll members, a sheet of music adapted to pass over the same, said roller provided with means to engage said sheet of music and shift therewith, and means whereby one of said members is shifted to correspond with said sheet.
5. In an automatic control apparatus, a roller. a tracker board member and music roll members, a sheet of. music adapted to pass over the same, said roller provided with means to engage said sheet of music and shift therewith and valvular means whereby one of said members is shifted to correspond with said sheet.
6. In an automatic control apparatus, an idler, a tracker board member and music r011 members, a sheet of music adapted to pass over the same, said roller provided with means to engage said sheet of music and shift therewith, and pneumatic means whereby said tracker is shifted to correspond with
