LADYS CANVAS COAT-FRONT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SoL DECKER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies Canvas Coat-Fronts, of which the following is a complete specification.

The main objects of this invent-ion are to provide an improved construction of ladies canvas coat fronts adapted to be inserted between the outer or dress material and the lining, and to retain the form of the coat; to provide an improved construction adapted to lend to the garment a perfect bust form and the proper fullness over the hips; to provide a construction in which the parts are so formed that when connected together they readily assume the required form; and to provide a coat front in two sections so that the fabric may be cut to good advantage and the front may be formed with a minimum waste of material.

A specific construction embodying said invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a canvas coat front embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line A-A of F ig; 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line BB of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line C-C of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the front canvas section as it is cut from the goods. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the rear canvas section as it is cut from the goods. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the stiffening section, showing in full lines its shape as cut from the goods and in dotted lines its completed shape to provide the bust form.

In the construction shown in said drawings, the front canvas section 1 when out from the goods, as shown in Fig. 5, has its front margin 2 straight with the exception of the upper portion on a slight forward angle to project into the lapel. The rear margin 3 of said front section is cut on a bias from the top 4 downwardly and forwardly to the point 5 which is located at the top of the hip, and from the point 5 on a bias downwardly and rearwardly to the bottom 6, so that said margin as a whole is in the form of an obtuse triangle.

The rear canvas section 7 is adapted to be attached at its front margin 8 to the rear margin 3 of the front section, and the upper Specification of Letters Patent.

portion of said margin 8, from the point or top 9 to a point 10 approximately over the central portion of the bust is cut on the same bias as the line 45 of the section 1, and from the point 10 to a point 11 said margin curves sharply rearwardly, and from the point 11 to the lower end 12 of the margin is cut straight on a downwardly and rearwardly directed bias.

The length of the margin portions 9- 1( )--ll of the section 7 is equal to the margln portion 4-5 of the section 1, and when said margins are secured together edge to edge, with the point 9 coinciding with the point 4, and with the curved portion 10-11 attached to the lower part of the portion 45, the united sections are caused to assume a convex form on their outer face over the bust both vertically and laterally with the center 13 of the bust as the axis of convexity, as shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. hen the curved marginal portion 10-1l is attached to the portion 45 the marginal portion 1112 is caused to overlap the section 1, and when said portion is brought back and attached along the upper part of the marginal portion 56 it acts to cause a fullness over the hip between the points 14-15 in the rear margin 12-16 of said section 7. Said margin 1216, as cut from the goods is approximately straight from the arm pit downwardly.

The stiffening section 17 may be formed of hair cloth or any other suitable material adapted to retain the form of the garment. Said section 17 is out on its front margin from its top 18 downwardly and forwardly to a point 19 which coincides with the bottom of the lapel 20 of the section 1, and then along the line of the margin 2, to the bottom 21 of said stifiening section. Its rear margin 2122 extends upwardly and rearwardly below the center of the bust to a point beneath the arm pit. For the purpose of providing the bust curvature in said section 17 it is cut, from a point 23 slightly beneath the point 22, forwardly to a point 24 at approximately the center of the section, and then downwardly and forwardly a slight distance to a point 25. The portion 26 below said out is lapped over the portion 27 above the cut, as shown in dotted lines, and secured thereto. The contour of the lower portion of the completed section is then along the lines 192l -282322. The overlapping of the portions 26 and 27 causes conveXity of the section which coincides with the bust convexity formed by the united sections 1 and 7.

A padding section 29, of felt or other desired material, is cut out at 30 to provide the arm hole and its front margin extends from 31 at the top of the section 1, downwardly along the rear portion of said section to a point 32 slightly beneath the bust center, and then curves rearwardly beyond the rear margin of the section 7, and upwardly to the desired height over the shoulder. The joint between sections 1 and 7 and the front and lower margins of the stiffening section are covered with facing strips 33 of canvas.

In operation, when the parts are secured together, as shown in Fig. 1, the coat front is conveXed both horizontally and vertically over the bust, due to the fullness provided by the shape of the margins l--5 and 911. By reason of the rearward throwing of the margin 1112, the portion 14-15 of the margin 1216 is caused to curve outwardly to provide the desired fullness over the hip.

While but one embodiment of this invention is herein shown it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention.

I claim:

1. A ladies coat front comprising two sections arranged edge to edge, one of said sections having a straight marginal portion and the other havinga curved marginal portion adapted't-o be engaged thereto adjacent the bust portion and 'when united said margins providing a convexity over the bust and a stiffening section secured on the inner side of said sections and having an incision in one margin thereof and the edges of the incision overlapped to provide a convexity over the bust.

2. A ladies coat front comprising a front section and a rear section united together at their abutting margins, one of said abutting 2 ceases margins having two straight portions out of alinement with each other, and the other margin having two straight portions and an intermediate curved portion.

3. A ladies coat front comprising a front section having its rear margin constructed of two straight portions at an angle to each other, a rear section having its front margin constructed of a straight portion at each end out of alinement with each other, and a central curved portion between said straight portions, and a stiffening section secured to the inner side of said sections.

4. A ladies coat front comprising a front section having its rear margin constructed of two straight portions at an angle to each other, a rear section having its front margin constructed of a straight portion at each end out of alinement with each other, and a central curved portion connecting said straight portions, and a stiffening section secured on the inner side of said sections and having a slit extending from its rear margin centrally thereof, and the port-ion on one side of said slit lapped over the portion on the other side of the slit and secured thereto. 5. In a device of the class described the combination with a pair of sections ada ted to be connected at their edges, said e ges being so formed that when united the sections are spherically convexedover the bust, and one of said sections is vertically convexed over the hip, a stiffening section attached to the inner side of said sections and adapted to conform thereto, said stifi'ening section being partially severed from its rear margin inwardly and one portion thereof lapped over the other and secured thereto.
