FRUIT-PICKING BAG.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN J. BURCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Picking Bags, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to bags or sacks for receiving fruit, the'bag being carried in the field by the pickers, and the invention con sists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bag in the condition adapted to receive the fruit; Fig. 2 is a similar View of the bag with the lower end adjusted for the discharge of the fruit; and Fig. 3 is a view of the mouth of the bag. Fig. 4. is a detail view of the lower portion of the bag with one of the flaps turned back at the discharge opening in order to illus trate the extent and relation of said openmg.

The bag is made of any suitable material, such as canvas, and is of elongated form. It is provided at its upper end with an opening or mouth 1, the lower portion of which is held in fixed relation or in open position by a bow-shaped member of wire or other suitable material arranged in the hem of the material, and extending from the point 2 to the point 3. The upper portion of the bag, at its month, has its sides free and flexible.

For carrying the bag on the shoulder of the operator or fruit picker, I provide a suspension band attached to the extreme upper corner of the bag at 4., and reaching from this point to the point 5 at some distance above the lower end of the bag. This suspending strap is made adjustable by the fittings or clips 6, 7.

The discharge opening of the bag is formed between the points 8 and 9, and in Fig. 1 I have shown this portion of the bag suspended by rings 9, one of which is attached to each of the extreme lower corners of the material, and which, when the bag is in the condition for receiving the fruit, are threaded over a hook 10 attached to the bag at 11. By this construction the lower corner of the bag is folded upwardly to make a closure, so that the fruit inserted in the bag will be retained. When it is desired to discharge the contents of the bag, the rings are detached from the hook and the folded lower corners or flaps of the bag are allowed to drop down, thus exposing the opening between the points mentioned above for the free discharge of the fruit. This discharge opening, it will be noticed, is at the extreme lower corner of the bag. The wire loop at the mouth of the bag is for the purpose of retaining the mouth always open at its lower portion for the ready insertion of the fruit as picked by the operator.

I do not limit myself to the details of construction above described, nor to the particular way of providing or closing the lower discharge opening, as variations from the construction shown may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim as my invention l. A fruit picker bag having upper and lower sides and ends, a mouth at one end, a

discharge opening at the lower corner of the other opposite end extending along said end and along the lower side forming two flaps, means for suspending the bag attached to its upper closed side and means for holding the two flaps turned up to close the discharge opening, substantially as described.

A fruit picker bag having upper and lower sides and ends, a mouth at one end, a discharge opening at the lower corner of the opposite end extending along said end and along the lower side forming two flaps, means for suspending the bag attached to its upper closed side, and means for holding the two flaps turned up to inclose the discharge opening, said means consisting of a ring at the end of each of the flaps and a hook on the side of the bag, substantially as described.
