FIRE-HOSE CARRIER AND SPANNER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROLFE LovELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improved Fire-Hose Carrier and Spanner, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved lire hose carrier and spanner, and more particularly to be used for carrying and for tightening the couplings on ordinary fire hose, and the objects of my invention are to provide an apparatus that may be quickly attached to the hose at any place desired and as quickly detached, and further that said apparatus may be used for a Spanner for tightening the couplings. I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevational view showing the apparatus ready for carrying the hose, and showing the position by dotted lines of one portion when detached, and Fig. 2 is a top view of said apparatus, and showing by dotted lines the varied positions of the handles.

This apparatus is composed of a clamp divided into two parts, l and 2. The part l is provided on its lower side with lugs la, one on each side, between which is pivoted on pin lb a central lug 2a on the part 2. Each part of the clamp is provided on the sides with double lugs lc and ld and 2b and 2c, between which are pivoted handles 3 on rivets le and 2f, one on each side of said clamp. On the top of part l of the clamp is provided a double lug lf between which is pivoted latch 4L on rivet lg. Under one edge of said latch 4 and attached to part l of the clamp is a spring` lh adapted to keep latch 4 in a certain position. In the lower portion of part l between the lugs la'and the lugs ld is provided an oblong hole lk adapted to lit loosely over the pin in the coupling on an ordinary fire hose. In the upper portion of part 2 of the clamp is provided a slo-t 2e which is bridged over by lug 2d. This slot is adapted to loosely lit the other pin on the coupling of the fire hose, and is so bridged so as to allow the entrance of said pin. The latch 4l is provided with a downwardly eX- tending lug 4a adapted to t over the lug 2d Specification of Letters Patent.

when the latch is held in a certain position by spring lh. The handles 3 are formed so as to lit the hand on their extended portion as shown best in Fig. l and are pro vided on their inner portion on one side with a lug 3a, adapted to fitagainst the flat surfaces li and 2g when the handle is straight out which prevents it from turning farther forward when pulling the hose, the other side being rounded so as to allow it backward movement as shown by dot-ted lines in Fig. 2. y

It will readily be seen that with this construction and one portion of the carrier being down as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l the other portion may be quickly placed over the hose at any portion desired, and by raising handle 3 up so that lug 21 will engage with lug la as shown in full lines in Fig. l, the carrier is then ready for use. By pressing on the outer end of latch 4L spring lh will be pressed downward and portion 2 of the clamp will immediately drop to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. Also when in this position the hole lk may be placed over the pin in an ordinary lire hose coupling and the section 2 closed as before, and thus the apparatus may be conveniently used as a Spanner for tightening said fire hose coupling.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A fire hose carrier and spanner comprising a double clamp hinged on one side, a spring latch on its opposite side, a handle on each part of said clamp, and slots in each part adapted to t a hose coupling when closed all substantially as set forth.
