To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, AROI-IIBALD S. NAPIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in match box holders adapted to hold an ordinary commercial box of matches in such way that the matches will be automatically fed from the match box into a trough from which they can be readily removed by the fingers.

The objects of the invention are, among other things, to provide a holder which shall be cheap and simple in construction, wherein the matches will be fed evenly from the match box to the trough of the holder, and wherein means are provided forholding an advertising card or display matter whereby the match box holder can be used as an advertising novelty.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of the blank which, when folded, constitutes all of the holder except the front wall thereof; Fig. 2 is a view of the blank for the front wall; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the match box holder with the match box inserted therein; Fig. 4 is a front view of a fragment of the lower part of the holder shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the holder and match box showingthe method of inserting the match box into the holder; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line a0 a" of Fig. 3.

The blank shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings comprises a body portion 2, which constitutes the back wall of the holder, side wings 3, which constitute the side walls of the holder, and a downwardly projected portion 4:, which constitutes the bottom of the holder and its trough. The blank shown in Fig. 2 constitutes the front wall 5 of the holder. These blanks are made preferably of thin sheet metal stamping. In constructing the holder from these blanks,

the side wings 3 are first bent up toward each other upon the dotted lines 6, so as to bring them at right angles with the back wall 2. It will be seen that the side wings are rounded at the bottom, and formed with laterally projecting toes 7 which extend out beyond the outer edge of the wings, to form the side walls of the forwardly projecting match trough. After the wings have been bent into position, the bottom portion 4 is curved upwardly so as to bring it into substantial alinement with the curved bottoms of the side wings to which it is then secured by passing the tongues or lips 8, with which it is provided on either side, through the registering slots 9 at the bottom of the side walls. After being passed through the slots 9 the lips 8 are bent over as shown in Fig. 3 to lock the side walls in place against the bottom portion 4. By this construction the

4 and 7 extend beyond the face of the box to form a closed ended trough for the matches. The front wall 5 is then placed upon the face of the box between the side walls 3,to which it is secured by passing the tongues or lips 10 with which it is provided on either side through the alining slots 11 in the side walls, and bending these tongues or lips over against the sidewall, as shown in Fig. 3. The side walls are extended a little beyond the slots 11 so as to form strips 12 which can be bent over upon the faceplate along the dotted lines 13, in order both to hold the parts more securely together and also to form a holder for the advertising card 14: to be placed upon the front of the box as hereinafter described. The advertising card is then placed upon the face of the front wall of the box and the side strips 12 folded over upon it on either side. It is also held at top and bottom by folding over upon it the top and

The holder is of a size just large enough to hold snugly an ordinary commercial box of matches consisting of an open ended shell 17 and a sliding box 18. Before the match box is inserted into the holder one of the end walls of the sliding box 18 is torn ofi or removed as indicated at 19 in Fig. 5 of the drawings, so that the matches 20 therein can drop into the holder when the parts are in place. In order to assemble the mat-ch box and holder, the match box is placed with its removed end uppermost as shown in Fig. 5, and the holder is then turned upside down and slipped down over the match box. The

holder is then reversed and restored to its normal position, as shown in Fig. 3. The matches will drop down through the open bottom of the sliding box 19 into the trough of the holder, and will lie side by side exactly as they were packed in the box. In order that they may be readily removed from the trough with the thumb and finger, the front edge of the trough is formed with a central notch or opening 21. It will be noticed that one-of the side walls 8 is formed with a vertical slot 22 to expose the roughened scratching surface 23 which is usually provided upon the side of the match box. The back of the holder is provided with an upwardly extending portion 24 whereby it can be hung upon a wall.

In use the holder is put together from the blanks shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in the manner hereinbefore described, and any desired display card 1 1 secured upon the face of the front wall thereof. The display card can be removed by turning up the lip 15, and if necessary the overlapping side portions 12 and the bottom tongue 16, and replaced with another card which is secured upon the holder in the same manner. The match box is inserted into the holder in the manner above described and the holder is ready for use. The matches will drop into the trough as shown in Fig. 3, and as the matches already in the trough are removed, others will automatically drop down to take their place.

I claim as my invention:

1. A match box holder having at the bottom a forwardly projecting trough and constructed of two blanks, one of said blanks constituting, when folded, the side, back and bottom walls, and the other blank constituting the front wall, interlocking connections between the meeting edges of said blanks, and cooperating means carried by the blanks for holding a display card upon the face of the front wall.

2. A match box holder having at the bottom a forwardly projecting uncovered trough and constructed of two blanks, one of said blanks constituting when folded, the side, back and bottom portions of the holder, and the other blank constituting the front wall of the holder, and interlocking connections between the meeting edges of said blanks, the side walls being formed with strips adapted to be folded over upon the face of the front wall so as to hold a display card upon said face wall.

3. A match box holder having at the bottom a match trough and constructed of two blanks, one of said blanks constituting when folded, the side, back and bottom portions of said holder, and the other blank constituting the front wall of the holder, and interlocking connections between the meeting edges of said blanks, the side walls being formed with strips adapted to be folded over upon the face of the front Wall, and the front wall being formed with a bent over strip at the bottom, said strips being adapted to hold a display card upon the face of the front wall.
