To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, AMANDA R. LOGAN and MARIE A. L. BARRELLE, citizens of the United States, residing at East Ohehnsford, and North Reading, respectively, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushions for Bed- Pans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in surgical appliances and relates particularly to a bed pan attachment for use either in the hospital or r in the home, the device being in the nature of a cushion which is adapted to rest upon and be secured detachably to the lower end of a bed pan so as to relieve the pressure on the patients back while using the pan.

The invention has for its primary object a simple and eflicient construction of device of this character which will, by the construction and arrangement of its parts, be held properly in shape to snugly fit upon a bed pan at the lower end thereof, the invention embodying an inflatable body portion which is reinforced and braced by a flat spring of steel or the like which is incorporated therein within the lower side or bottom thereof, said spring extending longitudinally of the cushion from the front to the rear edge thereof, and provided at its edge with oppositely extending branch arms arranged to hold the device in shape so as to snugly fit the bed pan, the spring also embodying front and rear hooks arranged to be clipped over the edges of the pan so as to detachably secure the cushion thereto.

With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim..

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

The body portion 1 of our improved bed pan attachment or cushion is inflatable and is preferably constructed of rubber or the like, covered or uncovered, the body portion being provided at any desired point with an inflating nipple or valve 2.

This may be constructed of spring steel or the like and is incorporated within the cushion or body portion 1, being preferably secured to the bottom thereof in any desired way. The combined brace and clip 3 embodies a longitudinally extending brace portion t which extends from the front to the rear of the cushion at about the middle thereof and divergent brace members 5 at the rear end of the longitudinal brace portion 4:. The spring brace and clip is also provided with forward and rearward extensions 6 and 7 that are hooked as shown, so as to serve as clips to detachably connect the cushion to the lower end of the bed pan, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, the practical operation of our improved bed pan cushion will be apparent.

After the cushion is inflated it is laid upon the lower end of the bed. pan, one conventional type of which is illustrated in the drawing, the front and rear hooked clips 6 and 7, being engaged with the front wall of the cross web at the lower end of the bed pan and the lower rear edge thereof respectively. It is manifest that by the use of a device of this character the pressure upon the small of the patients back will be effectually relieved, and the patient will thus rest comfortably upon the pan. It is also evident that by the provision of the spring members and clip 8, the device will be kept properly in shape and may be easily secured to and detached from the pan.

It is to be understood that our invention is not limited to the exact construction, arrangement and proportion of parts illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but that various modifications may be made without depart ing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim. For instance, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the combined brace and clip, there designated 8 may be formed in addition to its branch arms 5' at the rear edge of the pan, with divergent branch arms 8 at the front edge of the pan, or, as illustrated in Fig. 5, where the combined brace and clip is designated 3 the front and rear edge branch arms 8* and 5 may be joined together at the side edges of the pan by con nectingstrips 10, all of the parts of the combined brace and clip being preferably integrally formed. Preferably, the rear hook of the device is formed with an aperture 9 by which the pan may be suspended from a nail or other support.
