iii-ii WILLIAM I. DQWNEY, OEWILIVEINGTON, DELAWARE.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM H. J. Downer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference I being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of this specification.
Thisimention relates to new and useful improvements in smoking pipes and coinvarious details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will. be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawlngs, 1n wh1ch:'
Flgure 1 IS a lpngltudinal central sectlonal view through a pipe embodying-the features of my invention. F 1g. 2 1s a side elevation of the pipe. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a screw threaded cap, and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a perforated bottom or disk mount-- ed within the bowl of the pipe.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bowl of the pipe which has a chambered portion, from the upper end of which a duct G leads laterally at an angle and is adapted to communicate with the duct J formed in the handle H. Said handle has one end tapering and adapted to engage a recesswith tapering walls formed in a laterally projecting portion of the bowl, and K designates a ferrule fitted over the portion 'of the bowl enga ed by the stem.
I iIesignates a screw threaded plug fitting in a threaded aperturein the curved portionof the stem and affords-means whereby the stem may be conveniently cleansed.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August-7,
nie nber D in place,
Fitted to the lower end of the bowl and Patented Aug. 16,1910. 1909. Serial No. 511,740.
I over the opening leading into the chambered portion thereof is a button or disk D having draft perforations E therein, and B designates a-threaded cap which is apertured as at D and fitted to the threaded circumference of the .bowl and'adapted to hold the as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be. noted that I have shown the pipe in Fig. l of the drawings as having in solid lines a curved stem and in dotted lines one which is nearly straight, but it will be understood that the stem may be of any shape desired.
By the provision ofa pipe made in accordance with my invention, fire will be retained much longer than withv the ordinary open bowed pipes and will not allow tobacco to fall out and the pipe may be conveniently carried in the pocket of clothes without burning "the same. By the arrangement of the passageways, the smoke will be cooled and cleaned and saliva will be prevented from settling in the bowl.
By the provision of a pipe made in accordance with the drawings, the device may be held in any desired position while a person is smoking and work equally as well. -What I cla1m to be new 1s:-
A smoking pipe comprising an inverted bowl having a laterally and downwardly extending contracted portion with a recess in the end thereof with a duct leading from said recess at an inclination, thence downwardly into the top of said bowl, a threaded cap closing the o ening at the bottom of said bowl, a per orated disk intermediate said cap and the end of the bowl, a curved stein having one end en aging said recess and curved underneath the bowl,' as shown and described i In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. in the presence of two witnesses. WILLIAM H. J. DOWNEY Witnesses: I
J. G. Gear, W. B. F. HAWKINS.
