Be it known that l, CARI. G iinrisox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse. in the count-y ot' Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and awful Improvements in Ty )ell'riting Machines, oi which the following is a specification.
Vl`his invention comprises various improvements in the carriage stops and inargin rclease devices ot' typewi itiiig machines.

Referring to the drawing, l indicates the rear portion of the top plate of the machine frame, and 2 indicates the back bar of the carriage frame. .l rock shaft 3 is journaled upon adjustable pivot screws et arranged in hearings 5 which are secured to the to plate of the machine at its right and le t-hand ends. Levers and i' are secured to the rock shaft 3 near its ends, and a margin rack bar 8 is secured to the forwardly projecting armsl 6 and 7 of said levers. The levers 6 and 7, and the rack har, normally rest in a horizontal position. as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, being supported on fixed points Sf. A rod or link t) is pivotally connected to the rear arm 7" of the lever 7 and to the free end of a sub-lever l0, which is pivoted upon a stud' 1l secured in a bracket. 1:3 depending from the top plate of the machine. The stroke ot the bell hammer may thus he verl,i amveniently adjusted.
A rod or link 1T has its upper end pivoted to the rear arm (3b of the lever t3, and the 75 lower end of this rod has a longitudinal slot `1T engaging a pin 18 upon the horizontal arm 19H of a bell crank lever 1t) which 1s pivoted upon a stud Q0 secured in a hanger 2l depemling from the top plate l. The ver- 80 tical arm 1t)b of said hell crank lever is arranged to operate the line lock mechanism, more particularly described in a companion application. The slot 1T permits lost motion between the rod 1T and the. hell crank 85 lever l5), so that the margin rack may be raised a sufficient distance to .sound the hell without operating the line lock mechanism, and when the rack is further elevated the line lock mechanism is operated by the movement of the bell crank lever 19, which is then operatively engaged h y the rod 1T.
The margin rack 8 is graduated, as shown,
to correspond with the letter spacing of the machine, und is provided, on its rear edge,
with notches 22 arranged one leiter space apart. margin stop 23 is provided upon the right-hand portion of the rack for regnlatin;r the left-hand margin ot' the page of printed matter, and a `stop fl is arranged 100 npnir the left-hand portion of the rack to regulate the right-hand margin.
