IMPROVEMENT IN PAD-SADDLES..

Be it known that I, ROBERT MCCLARY, of Crestline, in the county of Crawford, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad- Saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description otl the same, reference being had to thc accompanying drawing, and to the letters 0i' reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which is'represented a sideot the pad-saddle, with a portion of the outer or dressface or skirt removed, in order to clearly illustrate my improvement.

The nature of my invention consists in construct-v ing a pad-saddle, so arranged that it'shall have all the advantages in form possessed by the ordinary tree-saddle, being provided withA seat, .pummel, and

cantel, and thisbeing accomplished vwithout the' iutrodnction of tree, spring, or any other like device.

My invention also consists in so inserting between the skirt and lining, and securely quilting therein, cross-straps or strips of leather, to which the st-i'rrnpring, girth-billets or straps, and crupper-,rings,'are all attached, and in such manner that the skirt is relieved ot all strain, and,` consequently, all danger of the same being either torn or drawn ont of form is entirely avoided. v

` To any one at all familiar with this stylepof saddle, the'advantages of my invention will readily suggest themselves. It is cheap and most durable, excecdingly neat in appearance, and, owing to its form, is as comfortable and easy to ride `on as it' constructed with a tree.

'lo enable others skilled in the art to makeand use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is a saddle-skirt, and is lined, stuifed,andqu'ilted in the usual manner.

lhe leather facing of the skirt and the. lining are cut in such manner as to allow of the ibrination, in stuling and quilting, of the pummel a and cantcl a', which gives to the tinished saddle all the advantages in shape and form that anI possessed by the ordinaryfrom view, being inserted between the skirt and lining, and quilted therein to tlie line x-x, where its slope begins, as clearly shown at b.

'Io this strap B is securely stitched, or otherwise fastened, the girth-billet or strap U, and the stirrup.

Suitable openings are cut in the skirt', through which the ends of these straps (l I) protrude.

It wil-l be observed that the skirt A. is thus freed from all strain in connectiony with these straps, the same being borne by the strap B, to which they are attached; and as this strap B runs clear through the pad, all danger of the skirt heilig torn or drawn out of shape'is entirely removed. This' is a great adval'itage, and renders my pad-saddle far superior to those now 1n use.

E is an additional bearing-strap, running diagonally across the strap I5, and to which it is securely fastened by stitching, as seen at e, or other equivalent device.

These straps E E cross the strap B, at such angles as to protrude -at the front and rear of v"the saddle, at such points as to afford suitable bearings for the erupper-rings l? Fand breast-billets or straps F ll".

,lhese straps E E need not necessarily protrude at the edges ot' the saddle, as the crupper and breaststrap iastenings may he secured to them before the saddle is quilted, and they may protrude.

'lhe attachments for 'the breast-straps may be dispensed with when deemed desirable.

Having thus fully described my invention,

XVhat I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-

1. The strap B, when the same is so arranged and secured between the skirt and lining as to afford a suitable bearing ibr the girtl'i-billet or strap U, and stirrup-strap l) to be attached, substantially as described.

y2. The bearing-straps .l E, when the same are secured within a pad-saddle, the whole being so arranged as to operate substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
