To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. B. JOHNSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at Pine Valley, in the Province of Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVater- Tube Grates and Draft-Protectors Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a water tube fire grate and more particularly to the class of stationary water tube fire grates with draft protector means therefor, designed for use in traction or other self propelled engines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a grate of this character in which a series of spaced tubes are arranged in the same plane with each other and conuected together at alternate ends so as to form a continuous flow of water therethrough when positioned in a fire box of a traction engine or the like, and means connecting the grate with the water boiler to permit the delivery and discharge of water to the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a water tube grate of the class described, in which the water tubes constituting the grate have connection with a boiler to enable a continuous flow of water through the said tubes, and means located beneath the tubes of the grate to protect and shield the surfaces thereof that would necessarily be exposed to an air draft through the ash pit or beneath the grate.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a water tube grate adapted for use with traction or other engines which is simple in construction, thoroughly efficient in operation and inexpensive and economical in the manufacture.
iVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and as brought out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a boiler body and its fire box with the invention applied thereto said boiler body being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View through the fire box. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 14c of Fig. 1.

In the drawings the numeral 5 designates generally the boiler body, having the usual water chamber or boiler 6, riveted or other wise secured at its forward end to a smoke chamber 7 and similarly connected at its rear end to a fire box 8, and leading from the latter to the smoke box through the water chamber are. a series of fire tubes 9, so as to permit the proper combustion of the fuel within the fire box.
Secured within the fire box to the lining thereof are opposed supporting plates 10, upon which are adapted to rest alternately connected ends 11 of a plurality of spaced parallel water tubes 12, forming a fire grate and which tubes are arranged in the same plane with each other to support fuel within the tire box. In the elbow pipe 15 is a check valve 19, to prevent the back flow of water in the supply pipe and the supply of water is controlled by an angle valve 20, mounted in the elbow pipe.
Suspended below the water tubes 12 are shields, each comprising a V-shaped plate 21 the latter being coextensive with the parallel portions of the tubes 12 and mounted transversely therein at intervals are cross pins 21' the same resting upon the upper surface of the tube, whereby the said shields will be suspended immediately below the tube, so as to cover and protect the lower half of the water tube from an air draft created through the fire pit or ash chamber 22 upon the opening of a draft door 23 of the usual type.
In this manner the Water tubes 12 Within the fire box are shielded or protected from being cooled by an air draft to eflect the combustion of the fuel supported by the grate within the said fire boX.
From the foregoing description the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly apparent without the necessity of a further detail description or a more extended explanation therefore the same has been omitted.
