The ballasting of the road is performed iii the usual manner, either by dump cars or hand spreaders. The is deposited between the ties pended between liinnmoclts in the roadbcd. The operation of the driving disks il through the pitmen l2 is to reciprocate the bar 8 in the slots 7, i'. The reciprocation of the bar 8 when the bar 1T is attached thereto results in reciprocating the said bar 17. The path of reciprocation of the bar 17 iscontrolled by the slots T, T. The reciprocations are produced by the rotation of the shaft 1t) through the transmission mechanism embodying the gears :20 and 2l, the wheels 23 and :2t and the chain 2o. yl`lie speed of reciprocation may bc varied, as is obvious, by changing the wheels 2() aud 2l to Vary the ratio in diameter between the two wheels. l
With each forward thrust of the liar li' the teeth 18 are forced through the intervening earth or rock ballast or bed, lifting and loosening the same, and depositing the saine to the rear of the said bar 1T and iii the path of the cleared shoulder thereof; vWith the return ol' the bar li', the said loosened ballast or earth is drawn rapidly and forcibly back and packed under the rearwardly disposed tie. 'l`lie reciprocationsA are at sulliciently short intervals to produce a comparatively constant action, therebyr performing the best work by tamping or par iing under the ties the ballast or earth iii small quantities at each operation, much iii the manner of hand tampiiig.

A railroad tamping machine, comprising a wedge-shaped bar disposed beneath the railroad ties; supporting 'members for said bar; and a power driven reciprocating mechanism operatively connected with said bar.
