To all whom/it may concern.
Be it known that l, JOHN T. Sonar/rrr, citizen of the United States, and resident of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements hereinafter appear, my invention consists in y the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devicesto be hereinafter described and lparticularly pointed outin the appended claims.

I have shown my invention embodied in a front-strike machine, although it should be understood that from certain aspects of my invention features thereof may be embodied in other styles of typewriting machines. Moreover, from certain aspects of my invention it is not essential that features of the invention be embodiedv in a shiftii g basket typewriting machine. l y
4The frame of the machine comprises a base 1, corner posts 2 and a top plate 3. A cylindrical platen 1i, diagrai'nmatically shown in the drawings, is mounted in a suitable carriage (not shown) which'travcls across the top plate from side to side of the machine. Type bars 5 are segmentally arranged 'and are mounted on. a pivot wire 6 and work in segmental slots 7 a in a type bar segment 7. These angular key levers are provided with horizontally'dis- -posed arms which extend forwardly differa series of straight sub-levers 35 of the third order, said sub-levers belng fulcrumed on a pivot rod 36 which extends from side to side of the machine and is secured at its ends in the rear corner posts 2. The sub-levers extend downwardly from their fulcrums in an opposite direction from the sub-levers 10.
f In other words, the two series of upright sub-- levers 10 and 35 extend in opposite directions from their fulcrums, one series 10 eX- tending' u wardly` and the other downwardly an the two series of sub-levers are parallel when at rest at least throughout a portion of their length. rIhe sub-'levers 35 may be of a uniform length, although there is a variation in the effective lengths of the' levers as will hereinafter' more clearly appear. It will be observed that the links 37 connecting the two sets of sub-levers affords a relative shifting movement between them during the case shifting movement of the type bars; that during thisI case shifting movement the key levers and sub-levers 35` remain fixed while the .sub-levers l() shift with the type bars and turn the links 37 around their rear-ends where they are pivotally connected to the sub-levers 35. Froma comparison of Figs. l and 3 it will be seen that lnormally the sub-levers 35 and 10 are substantially parallel, Whereas when a printing key is depressed the associated pair of sub-levers move' into converging lines, as' shown at b e in Fig. 3.
The sub-levers 10 extending to different vheights from their fulcrums for coperation with the series vof segmentally arranged type bars have dierent angular movements and 'different leverage. In order to compensate for this variation in leverage and angular movements of the sub-levers l0, and to compensate for the variation in leverage produced by the variation in the length of the horizontal arms of the key lelIn this manner I am enabled to providea uniform leverage throughout the system and,a uniform extent of dip of the -keys at the keyboard and to com ensate for the variations in leverage at di erent points in the system and to compensate for the variation in angular movements of the parts.
I have hereinbefore stated that the sublevers may be of a uniform length, although their eifective lengths vary. This is by reason of the fact that the .connecting links 37 are connected to the sub-levers 35 at different points in the lengths thereof and at different distances from the fulcrum 36, whereas the keylevers are connected to the sub-levers 35 at uniform distances from thel fulcrums of the sub-levers 35 and the key levers. It is immaterial therefore whetherl the sub-levers 35 be of a' uniform length or be made only of the lengths necessary `to actuate their respective links 37.
It will be understood that the 4open ends 38 of the slots 8 in the type bars enablethe headed pins 9 on the sub-levers to be readily seated in said slots. It will also be observed that the slots 34 in the sub-levers 35 -are enlarged at their upperends, in the nature of buttonhole slots, to receive the heads of the pins 33 on the angular key levers in order to facilitate an' assembling of the parts.
By the present construction I not alone provide a substantially uniform leverage and a uniform dip of the keys throughout the system, but I also provide an acceleration of the type bar in its approach to the the sub-levers lO working in the inclined slots 8 in the t ype bars. .Each key lever and .printing position by reason of the pins 9 on 4 the parts controlled 4vthereby are restored to normal position by a restoring spring 39, although additional restoring springs may be employed if desired.
5 The present invention has some ot' the same objects in view as my cases Serial Nos. 499,228, 499,229 and 499,230, but the claims 1n the present case are restricted to features not embodied in said prior cases.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
