Be it known that'I, LOUIS SHOLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to type-writers ofthe class shown in United States Letters Patent Nos. 464,902 and 464,903, dated December 8, 1891, in which the type-bars have horizontal arms journaled parallel with each other and movable endwise in suitable fixed bearings and transverse type-bearing arms which are brought by the endwise movement of the horizontal arms to a common plane and swung in that plane against the platen by turning the horizontal arms.
The main objects of the invention are to make the type-bar-operating'slides and their connections easily accessible and removable for inspection and repair, to simplify and improve the construction of the slotted guidcplate, to eifectively arrange the requisite number of typebar-operating slides in a small space, to vary the leverage of the op crating-slides on the-type-bars according to the different lengths of the type bearing arms, to vary the leverage of the key-levers on said slides according to the extent of their movements, so as to secure a uniform degree of depression for all'the keys, and generally to improve the construction and operation of machines of this class.
The invention consists of certain novel features in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, ashereinafter particularly described, and pointed outin the claims.

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 1 1, Fig. 3, of a portion of a typewriting machine embodying my improvements. the line 2 2, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a partial plan view and horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.

The pivot-arms a, which are supportedhorizontally and parallel with each other in bearings B B, provided in the frame,'are capable of turning and mov- They are provided on opposite sides with pins or fingers c and cl. The type-arms a, which are provided with the characters or type, are of different lengths, as shown in Fig. 1, according to the'di'sta'nce of the pivot-arms a from the platen, which is-indicated by a'dotted line in-Fig'l, and they stand when at rest one above another in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the platen and a little to one side of the common printing-point.
C is'a' guide and cover plate detachably fixed tothe frame of the machine in front of and parallel with the pivot-arms a. It is formed with an oblique series of L-shaped or angular slots 0', which engage with the forwardly-projecting fingers c. The horizontal parts ofthese slots are arranged directly opposite thepivot-arms a, with whose fingers 0 they engage, so that said fingers will stand horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, when the type-bars are at rest in their normal positions.
This arrangement of the slots in the guideplate withreference to the pivot-arms avoids the necessity of forming the horizontal parts of said slots with beveled edges, as shown in each of the patents hereinbefore mentioned,
and admits of punching and completely forming eachslot in a single operation, thereby greatly simplifying the construction of the guide-plateand materially reducing its cost. The guide-plate 0 serves to cover and protect the pivot-arms and bearings of the typebars and to give a finished appearance to the front of the machine.
D D are vertically-movable slides having oblique slots 01 d engaging. with the rearwardly-projecting fingers cl d. They are arranged in difierent planes in an accessible position on the rear side of a back plate or frame E, which is attached to the machineframe behind the pivot-arms a, and they are detachably connected with said plate and guided parallel therewith by shouldered turnbuttons F, which are swiveled in said back plate and adapted to be engaged with longi tudinal slotsf in said slides, as shown in Fig. 1. They are held in place at their lower ends, which are made narrower than their upper slotted portions, by a cross plateor bar G, the guiding-openings in which are arranged at different distances from the plane of the back plate D, as shown in Fig. 3. The slides which are farthest from the back plate are connected with the type-bars which have the longest type-arms, and consequently require the most power for their operation. This arrangement of the slides also admits of their the leverage of the operating. connections with the type-bars according to the length of their type-arms and the power required to operate them.
By turning the cross-bars of the buttons F into a vertical position the slides D can be readily removed and replaced, and by re moving the guide-plate C the pivot-arms a and their bearings become accessible and the typebars may be removed. Inspection and repair of the machine are thus greatly facilitated.
H H are the type-levers, which are provided at their front ends in the usual way with keys h 71 and are fulcrumed at their-rear ends on a cross-rod I.
J J are intermediate or auxiliary levers arranged above the type levers H and fulcrumed at their front ends on a cross-rod K. At their rear ends they are loosely engaged with the lower ends of the slides D below the guide-plate G, and at intermediate points between the rod K and the slides D they are connected with the type-levers by linksj It will be seen that the type-levers H are of the second class and the levers J are of the third class and that by connecting the links j with the levers J at different distances from their fulcrums the'leverage between the operating-keys and the type-arms may be adj usted to compensate for the greatermovement of the slides, which are connected with and operate the longer type arms, and to provide for a like depression of all the keys for the operation of typearms of different lengths.
The key-levers and the type-bars, with their connections, are returnedto and held in their normal positions by adjustable springs L. (Shown in Fig. 1.) The tension of these springs is adjusted by screws Z Z.
Type-writing machines of the class to which my improvements relate are usually each provided with two series of type-bars arranged on opposite sides of the center of the machine with the type-arms a, at the inner ends of the pivot-arms a, and the guiding and operating connections of both series are alike, except that the angular guiding-slots c and the oblique slots cl in the slides are reversed on one side of the machine with respect to those on the opposite side.
Various changesin the minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and intended scope of my. invention.
I claim- 1. In a type-writing-machine the combination of a series of angular type-bars having pivot-arms which are capable of turning and moving endwise, each of said arms being provided on opposite sides with fingers, a fixed guide-plate having a series of angular slots -with which the fingers on one side of said arms engage, and slides having oblique slots engaging the fingers on the opposite side of said arms, substantially as described.
2. In a type-writing machine the combination of a series of angular type-bars having pivot-arms capable of turning and moving endwise and provided with fingers, a guideplate having a series of angularslots engaging fingers on said arms, and a series of slides arranged in planes at different distances from said arms and provided with oblique slots engaging fingers on said arms, substantially as described.
3. In a type-writing machine the combination of a series of angular type-bars having pivot-arms capable of turning and moving endwise and provided with fingers, a fixed plate or frame parallel with said pivot-arms, and overlapping slides detachably connected with said plate in diflerent planes and provided with cam-slots-engaging said fingers, substantially as described.

In a type-writing machine the combination of angular type-bars having pivot arms capable of turning and moving endwise and I provided with fingers, a fixed plate or frame parallel with said arms and having openings through which said fingers project, and slides having oblique slots which engage said fingers and detachably connected with said plate and guided by turn-buttons which engage longitudinal slots in said slides, substantially as described.
5. In a type-writing machine the combination of angulartype-bars having pivot-arms capable of turning and moving endwise and provided on opposite'sides with fingers,afront plate having angular slots engaging the fingers on one side of said arms, a backplate having openings through which the fingers on the opposite side of said arms project, and
slides arranged in different planes on therear side of said back plate and having oblique slots engaging with the rearwardly-projecting fingers of said arms, substantially as described.
6. In a type-writing machine the combination of a series of angular type-bars having type-arms of difierent lengths and pivot-arms capable of turning and moving endwise and provided on opposite sides with fingers, a guide-plate arranged in front of and parallel with said arms and having angular slots engaging with the forwardly-projecting fingers,
- a back plate arranged behind andlparallel with said arms and having openings through which the rearwardly-projecting fingers thereof project, and slides detachably connected with said back plate and held and guided in different parallel planes by shouldered turnbuttons swiveled in said backplate and en gaging longitudinal slots in said slides, which are also provided with oblique slots engaging the rearwardly projecting fingers of said pivot-arms, substantially as described.
7. In a type-writing machine the combination of angular type-bars having type-arms of difiierent lengths and pivot-arms capable of turning and moving endwise and provided with forwardly-projecting fingers, a guideplate having angular slots, the horizontal portions of which are directly opposite said pivotarms, whose fingers engage therewith, and means for turning each pivot-arm and mov- In witness whereofI hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
