While the invention ris shown as applied. to a typevvriter'in Which an inclosing case is employed, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in a machine in which an ordinary or any preferred form of frame may be employed or a 'frame independent of such case, and that said invention may be employed in typewriters of ri ous constructions.

, ced in. one direction by springs i9 and the slots are curved or so arranged that in one position the stays will act as a lock, and when forced against the springs 19 the case member 14 may be moved to its folded position.
A foldable support or memberl 20 is pivotally held to a transversely extending rod or shaft 21 which is rotatably supported in the sides of the main casing member 11. At the forward end of the foldable support 20 the latter is connected by links or legs 22 to the case member 14 so that the support 20 may be folded with the member 14 of the case, the distance between the pivots of the links corresponding to the distance between the hinge 15 and rod 21 to prevent such folding movement, though the lower ends of the links or legs need not necessarily be fastened to the case member 14:. The'support 2O has sides 23 which may be connected by a transverse bar 24 and mounted in said support 2O is a segment 25. Type-bars 26 are pivoted tothe segment in any suitable way, as to a rod 27, and said type-barsy are adapted to carry a plurality of type 27a and are supported at their outer ends on a cushion 28, the latter being held to a cushion supporting frame 29 extending outwardly from and supported by the segment. The type-bars are each normally forced in one direction by springs 30 and are each connected by a link 31 to one arm of a bell-crank lever Each bell-crank lever is pivotally held to a rod or support 33. There are four rods each being adapted to support a plurality of the levers 32. The bell-crank levers 32 each have one arm, as 34, provided with a cam edge 34 which is adapted to engage a cam edge 35 of key-operated levers 36. These levers 36 have keysa and are supported in groups or banks upon rods or supports 87, which latter are horizonte i arranged in the normal operative positie.- of the machine under the rods 33 and correspond in number to said rods 33. As each key is depressed the cam edge 35 will operate its coperating bellcrank lever and through a link 31 will move the type-bar upwardly and rearward for printing purposes, and by reason of the arrangement in groups or banks a substantially uniform touch is obtained.

The purpose of the cam edge or portion 51 of the type-bars is to start the universal bar gradually during the upward and rearward movement or' the type-bars and to give the universal bar an accelerated movement without altering the uniform character of the touch of the keys and in order that no sudden jar on the keys may be apparent to the operator when the type-bars start to aotuate said universal bar. At the rear of the universal bar are upwardly extending arms 52. These arms rest idly at their up-` per ends against the rear surface of the universal bar 48, and at their lower ends are held to a transversely extending rod 53, the latter being pivotally held at its ends in the sides of the support 20. Arms 54 project forwardly from the rod 53 and said arms have their forward ends slotted to engage pins 55 carried by the inner ends of arms 56. rlihe arms 5G are held tothe transversely extending pivot rod 21 and serve, when the universal bar moves the arms 52, to rotate the pivot rod 21, the latter bein rotatably held at its ends in the side mem ers of the main casing member 11.

The cam member 57 has lll? one or more substantially V-shaped or othermenace shaped and is pivoted at 64 to a lug on one of the sides of the main case member 1l and has its upper arm 65 extending inwardly and provided with a slotted or forked end 66 which is adapted to engage a pin 67 extending outward from a rod or element 68, so that on each movement of the lever 63 the said rod 68 by vmeans of the pin 67 will be rocked on its pivot pins or screws located at the ends thereof.

The rod or sha t 2l thus serves as the point of fold for the support 20 and the mecha nism operated by the universal bar, and said rod'may serve as the direct pivot for the foldable support 20 or may be held to rotate in stationary sleeves which form the direct pivot for said support 20.
The rod 68 or the lever 63 may serve as an element to operate other mechanisms, as for example the ribbon mechanism and escapement mechanism or either of them, or other parts of a typewriting machine, it being the intention o the present invention to claim broadly the universal bar, type-bar action and the means operated by the universal bar to permit relative Jfolding of the parte of a typewriter irrespective of the ultimate mechanism moved by said universel bar. As shown, the rod 68 is adapted to operate an escapement mechanism for the letterspacing movement of the carriage. The carriagehas a rack 69 secured to the base 29, and engaging this rack is a pinion 70, szlid carriage being attached to a exible connec-` tion 71 which passes about a spring drum 7 2 tending normally to force the carriage transversely of the machine. The pinion is held to a ratchet wheel 73, and the teeth ot" this ratchet wheel are engaged by aV pavvl 74 carried by a toothed wheel 75, said pawl permitting the carriage to be moved freely in one direction. rlhe toothed wheel 75 is engaged by the usual loose or li'mber dog 7 6 and fixed dog 7 7, said dogs being heldl to the -rod 68 so that when said rod is operated by an l of the key-operated levers 36 the dogsy wil be moved to permit the toothed wheel l 75 to escape and thereby permit the carriage to move a letter space at each depression of a key 36a in the usual Way.
It will be evident that the universal in the particular construction shown is foldbar able with the support 20 and the key action;
that one part of the universal bar mechanism is foldable with respect to another` or universal keyboard, antl'in the particular construction shown the support 20 andthe parts mountedthereon are foldable so as to` move the keys toward the platen to make the machine compact and to reduce the cubical contents thereof, and when folded, all the mechanism of the typewriter may be entirely inclosed and protected within the case, though as previously stated the invention is knot limited to a writing machine usingv an y lnclosmg case.
