To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK IV. H. WEISHAUPT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Springs and Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to beds and has special reference to a frame for bed springs and a spring therefor. One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of bed springs and frames.
Another object of the invention is to -provide a means whereby different portions of a bed spring ma be separately tensioned so that sagging o one part is prevented.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of bed spring constructed in independent sect-ions arranged to support. ich other at their proximate edges. With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in general of a bed frame carrying a plurality of spring sections and means for independently adjusting each of said sections.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction, and combinations ot parts hereinafterA fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specically set forth in the claims.

This bed sprlng and frame consists 1n general of a substantially rectangular frame. p
comprising end bars 10 adjacent each end of which are side rails 11 firmly secured to the end bars by means of bolts 12. The end bars 10 are preferably made of angle iron while the side rails 11 are of pipe or other tubing. In order to prevent the access of vermin to the side rails 11 these side rails are provided with a closure at each end in the form of a substantially circular plate 13 provided with projections 14 bent at right angles to the plate 13 and held to the each end of the side rails 11 by means of the bolt 12 which passes through a suitablefperforation in the `projection 14.
Securely ri end rails 10 are brackets 15 each provided in its upper portion with a circular socket 16 adapted to form a bearing. Between the bracket 15 at one end of the frame extends a pipe section 17, integral throughout its length and'having its ends supported in the respective sockets 16. Thisvpipe section 17 is held from rotating in the sockets by means of rivets 18. This pipe section 17 is also provided on its upper side with a. plurality of op'enings 19 wherein are held the ends of wire hooks 2() the other ends of which are engaged in openings 21 formed in a clamp member 22 between the edges of which are engaged a series of Woven wire spring sec-r tions 23 the proximate edges of which are so interwoven that each of these sections may have independent movement with reference to the remainder and in regard to its length. Each of these sections 24 and 27 is provided with a series of openings 30 in each of Which is held one end of each ot' a pair of Wire hooks 31 the oppositie ends of which areheld in suitable perforations -32 formed in sectional clamping members 33, there being one of these clamps to each ot the sections 23 of the bedl spring.
Each of the sections 24 and 27 is provided, preferably intermediate its ends With a circumferential series of staggered openings 34 adapted to receive one end of a locking bar 35 the opposite end of Whichis bent to engage beneath the edge ot" the member 10. Covering the openings 34 is a .sleeve 36 so cut away on its edge as to permit the introduction ot the hook 35 in one of said openings While at the same time the remainder of the openings vare covered to revent access of vermin to the interior ot the roller. In order to rotate the sections there is provided a suit-able lever having an end adapted to enter the perforations 34 and this level' is shown in Fig. 7 wherein the handle portion is indicated at 37 and the end referred to at 38.
In order to tension any certain portion of the bed, so that inequalities of the surface may be overcome or so that provision may be made for persons of more than usual Weight, the end 38 of the lever is inserted in one 'of the perforations 34 and passed out through the opposing perforation. The lever is then forced in the proper direction and that section of the roller rotated .until the desired tension has been reached, the

The first movement of the roller loosens the hookv 35 which is removed until the proper tension has been brought on the spring section 23. this is accomplished the hook 35 isreplaced in the proper opening and the lever 37 removed. By this means any one of the sec.
tions may be tensioned to any required degree Without interfering with the remainder of the sections, the arrangement thus constituting a means for separately tensioning each of said sections.
There has thus been provided a simple and eicient device of the character' described and for the purpose specified.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the brackets 16 at the fixed end are replaced by means of brackets 39. Attached to the `upper side of these brackets 39 is a When plate 40 secured on Which is a ribbon or bar 4l. Between the plate 40 and the bar 41 are clamped the fixed ends of the spring sections 23. It Willbe obvious that in this modification the pipe section 17, Wire hooks 2O and clamp member 22 are dispensed With.
It Will be noted from the construction of this device that by removing or adding to the number of sections 27 the tensioning device may be made to accommodate any desired Width of bed spring from that used on a single bed to a full doubie bed.
