Specification of Letters l 'atent. Application filed May 13, 1910.- seriaiito. 561,258
PatentedAug. 2, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHAN'N G. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States'to'f America, residing. in the city of Hartford, in, the county of Hartford andState of Connecti cut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Lam Sockets, of
whichthe following is a speci cation.-
My invention relates to electric lamp sockets and. particularly to the fasteningnieans by which the customary shell and cap are secured together, the object of my invention f being to provide an -improved. device, for
securing the separation. v
' In the'accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a cap and shell embodying my invention; and Fig. 2' is aperspective of thecap inverted and with parts detached. I
The-fastening device illustrated is'of the multi-catch type, comprisinga. shell A with its upper edge serrated jtoh engagein the teeth of the cup C fastened in the ca B in the manner described in'iny Patent umber 947,123, thus preventing angular-displacement of the parts with relation to each otherl-- The other element of the latching means, viz. that preventing endwiseseparationof the parts, forms the special subject of my present invention. 1
In my patent above mentioned it will be noted that these means comprise, the bevel latchingprojectionsa struck from the shell which engage 'in the annular .groove 6,
formed in the skirt of the cap.- It has been found in practice however't-hat it is impossible to form this annular groove with a sufliciently sharp engaging edge or shoulder to enable the projections a tosecur'ely catch 4 thereon, and to remedy this'defech'in part at any rate, the'catchesa haveibeen' made so large, -in order toget a grip thatsthe'y have'beentherebyvery much weakened and consequently are readily torn ofi. To 0bviate thes'edefects I now propose tose'c ure within the skirt .1; of the "cap a ring D with sharp, engaging edge d overwhich the' catches'a in the shell will latch when the parts-together against endwise [all 1 in 4 the' usual manner.
simple and efl'ective means to be" the extension of the cup C downward'to'forma-short skirt 0 lying within the skirt 6 of the cap "proper, which forms an abutment fer the upper. side of the ring D, while the latter is secured in this position by rolling over the lower edge of the skirt 1) beneath the lower face of therin'g. The sharp engagin edge lofthis ring renders it possible to ma e thecap and shell are'fitted together tel escopie V g Vhile, .this ring D 'may be secured in a 's1t1on in any suitable way, I have'founda catches a on the shell much smaller than 1 is necessary in the construction described in my patent above mentioned, thereby ma- 1 terially strengthening the latchingmeans in] ing. a fshell,'a cap with skirt fitting telescopically-over said shellya sharp edged ring secured within said skirt and means on' said shell engaging over the sharp edge of said ring toprevent endwise separation of said parts, substantially as described.
2. An incandescent lamp socket comprising a shell, a'cap with'skirt fitting telescopically over said shell, a cup fitting within said cap and having a skirt-of less length.
than that of the cap, in combination with a sharp edged ring abutting against the, skirt of said cup on one side and means in connection with the skirt of said cap for engaging said ring-on the other side, together with means on said shell engaging over the sharp edge of said ring to prevent end'wise separation of 'sai-d scribed. 4 1 r 3.,An incandescentlamp socket comprisparts, substantially as deinga shell, a cap with skirt fitting telescopic'a'lly over said shell, acup fitting vwithin said cap. and having a skirt of less length than that of the cap, in combination with a sharp edged ring abutting against the skirt In testimony whereof Ihave signed my of sald cup on one side, the lower edge of the name to this specification, in the presence 10 skirt on said cap beingrolled-ever the lowerof two subscribing Witnesses. face of said ring whereby the latter is secured in position, together with means on I JOHANN PETERSON said shell engaging overthe sharp edge of \Vitnesses: said ring to prevent endwise separation of HERMAN T. HARTWIG..
said parts, substantially as described. EDWARD R. Somn.
